That is one of my favorite things in the world, running in the darik in a white landscape and feeling the snowflakes on your face. +10 The "calm snows" are awesome like this, and I also love going out in the big storms if for no other reason that I get amused form all the "wtf this kid doing" looks.

The past couple weeks I've really been focusing more on strength workouts (switching every other day between upper body/lower body and abs) in addition to about 12-16 miles a week of running and I feel alot better overall. In the past I really wouldn't focus much on workouts or anything I would spend over half my time in the gym on the treadmill.

Basically, if you enjoy em go for it, but otherwise it's probably unnecessary. From the lifting side I'd ask Eschlow or some of the other lifting gosu's, but I could see it being a little more beneficial there (not personal experience though).

Does anyone know of/have/can recommend training regimes to prepare for a half marathon? (I would say I'm fit in general, fairly active, and lean but 0 long distance running ability in my experience - like doing 3k probably would make me want to die) I didn't see anything in the OP too related to it and I know absolutely nothing about training properly and smartly for doing something like this having never done it before. Thanks! Basically what Airblade said. Just gradually build up with easy running. If the thought of running 3k makes seems like you dying...your doing it wrong, especially coming from a fit background. Bottom line: ease way back on the throttle. Runs should be EASY, especially when your just starting. If this means your first runs are hardly any faster than walking (6-10+ min/km) that's fine. It will come down quick. Just gradually build consistency (i.e. add more days per week) till your doing 5-6k or so for five or six days of the week. Then increase the length of each run. If you get a solid month or two in at 50-60+ km/wk you'll have no trouble completing the half.

It's always good to get in some protein/carbs (often recommend at 1:2 ratio) after a run/workout, but for something like running your not really damaging or stressing the muscle super terribly, nor are you trying to add significant muscle like in lifting. Basically, if you enjoy em go for it, but otherwise it's probably unnecessary. From the lifting side I'd ask Eschlow or some of the other lifting gosu's, but I could see it being a little more beneficial there (not personal experience though). I'm pretty much with L_Master. The only time I'd recommend a shake after a run is if you do a very strenuous workout like really tough intervals or a very long run or a race. And even then you don't need to if you can eat an appropriate recovery meal in a timely manner. But these are usually the type of things that only very serious runners do. A protein shake i still just a supplement to regular food.

does anyone have a review or a piece of feedback on the Zombie Run type apps for Android? I'm seriously considering downloading it and heard good things about it - but I certainly wouldn't mind a few more anecdotes from TL before slating out 7 bucks for it.

1. How much running is too much running when your newb? Like, before you have a typical pattern that you normally follow for your runs, how do you determine when your overdoing it, and when your just being lazy? (Where to draw the line basically) 2. How long would it take an almost 16 year old dude who is soso at running currently to be considered "in good shape" or "above average?" And define what you mean by in good shape and above average too please. Any help is much appreciated.

Like, before you have a typical pattern that you normally follow for your runs, how do you determine when your overdoing it, and when your just being lazy? (Where to draw the line basically) This is tricky. The surface answer would seem to be as much as you can handle without with being progressively worn down till the point your so tired everyday you dread the thought of getting out the door and your running speeds start notably decreasing. However, the complication here is injuries. Too much too soon can cause all kinds of injuries to sneak up on you, and you might feel great for the first month only to be too much for your body to handle structurally and you get some problem like achilles tendonitis, PF, etc. General guideline is is probably start with 3-4 times of a week of 3 miles or so, and add a day or so per week. From there a safe guideline is usually to add about 2-5 mpw (roughly 10%) to your weekly totaly. Some people can increase much faster than this...but other people have to build up more gradually for their bodies to be able to handle it. We are an experiment of one though, so there is no definitive way for me to tell you start at X miles per week and add y miles per week. 2. Any help is much appreciated.[/QUOTE] COMPLETELY arbitrary but to me it would be something like this: Not out of shape = someone who can run a mile in around 7 minutes, and wouldn't be totally exhausted after a 3-4 mile run at 10 min/mile In good "general" shape = someone who can run about 6:30 for a mile (22ish 5k) and run 5 miles comfortably In good running shape = someone who can run under 6 for the mile and can comfortably handle runs of 6 miles on a fairly regular basis Solid runner = someone capable of running sub 5:40 and sub 20:00 Good Runnner = someone capable of running sub 5:20 and sub 18:30 Legit Runner = someone capable of running sub 5 and sub 17 Local Class = someone capable of running sub 4:40/low 16s Low Tier College = someone capable of running 4:30/15 mid D1 Runner/Regional Class = someone capable of running 4:15-20/sub 15/sub 25 (8k) Good D1 Runner = someone capable of <4:10 mile/sub 14:30 5k Elite D1 Runner = someone capable of low 4 mile/sub 14 5k Wtf?! = someone capable of sub 4/sub 13:30 WTF i don't even?!?!? = someone capable of sub 3:50/13:00 The fuck how is that possible o.O?! = 1:40.9/3:26/12:37/26:17

YES! Our work over at letsrun has paid off. We bugged them enough to acheive the unachievable. The 5,000m WR of Kenenisa Bekele is real. Video exists. It is now on youtube. I repeat. The video of the 5,000m men's world record IS NOW AVAILABLE. After 8 long years, we can watch hint (hint: it's probably the best race effort ever run.) THE link:

It was cold but I knew It was the best possible time before all the eating and partying for christmas/new year :D Well I wont lie I am a little dissapointed I ran it in a time of 5.30. I mean I guess that is a respectable time for me and there were a few few things that slowed me down roads etc but still... Gonna chill out over the new year and then get back to training in Jan I think. At least it should be quite easy to beat :D Thanks to everyone who posts in the various fiintness threads I wouldnt have even started training if it wasnt for you. Merry christmas and have a good new year!!

Go to a running store that lets you pop shoes on and run around a bit. Pick the one that feels the best and consider to any suggestions the person gives you if it's a specialty running store.

My 2013 goal is to become a "Legit Runner." My current plans are to run a semi half marathon in late March and then possibly a marathon in late October. I think if I bump my weekly averages up to 20-30 miles a week I can get into that kind of shape no problem. Thanks for this thread, I read it alot more than I post in it.
