In general only thing inside your head that actually can hurt are the meninges, maybe too much blood inside your vessels put some pressure on them? Probably no aneurysm, i don't think they hurt. No clue really what can cause this, seeing a doctor about it can't hurt.

All of you seem to be doing strength training, but hopefully someone can answer my question.
I used to run lots but I did a lot of damage to my joints running on concrete, so now that is painful for me, and I have stopped any structured exercising for the past two years. I do walk a ton around the city, so I am in decent shape.
Now I want to exercise just for the general sake of well-being though. I have no goals to lose weight or be super fast and strong, lol. I am hoping to use the stationary bikes or ellipticals in one of the lounges in my dorm, because I can't really exercise outside once winter comes.
About how long/often should I spend doing this each week to see some health benefits? Also, will it matter if I chose the bike or the elliptical, or is that just personal preference?

@Redjustice - i'm sure eshlow can help you out (where would we be without him)
All my lifts are in the advanced to elite range :D Nothing in the elite though (unless you include clean under powerclean :p) Could probably hit elite in squat and deadlift if i ran a smolov and CP cycle but that would be brutal and impossible to combine with rugby and oly lifting lol. Havent maxed out most of these since last year, probably havent gone up much though since i've been focusing on oly lifting. Wish they had CJ snatch and front squat on that list.
Did like 20 snatch reps today T_T went from 80 up to 100 (first time above 90 since my meet i think) Two of my reps at 95 apparently looked the best at first but i missed them T_T managed to nail a rep at 100 though and then i was out of gas, switched front squat and did 5 singles at 140.
Going to the biggest rugby tournament in the western hemisphere this weekend up in new york (phyre you should come :-p). 150-200 teams, 13 fields, should be awesome. Time to kick some assss

Seems really weird you're not allowed to press, are you sure? And has someone told you not to power clean? You can do it and lower the weight down without making much noise that anyone would mind (on a side note, i fucking hate people scared of weights and commercial gyms)

At least I made my lifts so I'm still on track to hit my squat and deadlift goals by the end of next week. I think I'll be able to do a single of my 5 rep goal for press by then too. Just need to stay positive.
I usually use a nice gym session to pull out of a hangover (come out of the "fog" so to speak). Unless i'm totally useless then i'll just sleep and be a waste of space, but i've found myself to usually be pretty hangover free (alcoholism? maybe.)

hey guys, i am a master level terran player who was once at the top of my master league playing about 5 hours a day, watching replays for 1 hour, and watching streams/tournaments for 1 hour. basically i was spending a ton of time. when i got a 2 week break during college i bumped my play up to 9-10 hours a day to get into the top rankings of us ladder(sidenote: i was eating fast food, candy, drinking alot of soda everyday, and i wasn't excersising at all). i was playing in a ton of tournaments and all of a sudden my forearms began to tighten up mainly in the extensor area and my wrist began to ache in pain. aching in the hands soon followed. i remember having this pain one time during beta but i took a 3 week break and it went away. this time this pain was constant all day everyday for 6 months. and here i am 6 months later with the same pain. i have been to doctors and they say its rsi. no carpell or tendonitis. just little soft tissue damage and rsi. so i took a month off and did physical therapy and nothing worked. it got a little better and i went back to play and made it worse. how long does it take for this to heal? and what am i going to have to do.. its extremely irritating. i may have to take a full month off from all computer use and start strengthening my arm/wrist/finger muscles. does anyone have experience with this?
i know tlo has had my same problem for a year now and from what ive read its all cleared up now. Last edit: 2011-07-28 10:37:56

All cases are different...
Here's a general write up
+ Show Spoiler +work on your shoulders first and see what happens; pec minor, lats, subscapularis (subscap can refer pain to wrist), pronator teres and work on your thoracic spinal posture;foam rolling, lacrosse balls, etc...... Nerve glides will most likely help significantly (median nerve especially for carpal tunnel): http://www.handhealthresources.com/Solutions Pages/Exercises.htmHEAT, massage THEN stretching to the flexors of the wrist. In that order. Aim to increase mobility in the wrist in that area. 2-3x a day 4-5x a week (10-15 mins for heat, 10-15 for massage, 5-10 for stretching). STRENGTHEN your extensors. ONLY your extensors. May be due to imbalances in the wrist as well. Strengthen your supinator. FISH OIL for anti-inflammatory.
HOwever, if it got worse playing you shouldn't be playing until it's healed.
You probably need to take a look at your nutrition/sleep/posture/ergonomics/etc.

@Decaf, is it the Can-Am Rugby tournament in Saranac Lake? I know that starts friday. Oddly enough, last summer I worked at a camp about half a mile down the road from where those fields are located, and I'm going to visit... -next- friday. It's maybe an hour and a half from where I live.
@Mementoss, I counted them as my 5RM... I don't know what they're written for actually.
@imSOZO, I know stress injuries can really vary in how long they take to heal. At the very least, cut the computer use to a minimum - I can't even think of a way to spend that much time doing one thing, day in day out. If you can't go without it, replace a bunch of the playing with watching streams/replays/tournaments - things that are less active. Check out your posture, big time - How are you supporting your elbows, how well does the seat conform to your back. Are you "reaching" to get to the keyboard, or perhaps is it too close? Clearly progamers can play this long under ideal conditions (although even they end up with stress injuries - boxer's shoulder for example) but at these amounts of time, anything that's not ideal is going to cause problems. Take a break until you're healed if you must... definitely change things around. If you try to play through it, and it gets worse, you're only going to be out for a longer time in the end while it heals.
@redJustice - Most people who aren't doing strength training just pop in, post once or twice, and then leave. The discussion is largely focused around strength training, because #1 - everyone else has been scared off by the big numbers, #2 - that's something that's commonly misunderstood and is easy to discuss, and #3 - there's a "core community" to this thread of regular posters who all lift. That said, we know a bit about conditioning too =p. Ellipticals, IMO are very... bleh. They force you to run with an unnatural rhythm, because there is a fixed footpath. Some people say that this makes it easier on the joints, but I personally think exactly the opposite. Perhaps that's because I have a naturally very long stride. The bike is going to be even easier than running though, so if you're going to have to either crank up resistance, if that's an option, or spend a very very long time using it every day. I would recommend, if you want something that's low impact, that you either use a rowing machine (most gyms will have them, especially on college campuses) or -and this is the best option, imo - you find a pool, and learn some good swimming technique. No cardio work is going to give you a better full body work out, and leave you gasping for breath faster than swimming. Again, if you're in a dorm, most college campuses will have a pool that students can access, even if the times might be restricted. Some might even offer classes, in case you're not the strongest swimmer around.
Just finished my own gym session today. I'm moving forward in powercleans... past the single plate (60kg/135 lbs) barrier... I made a 10 lb jump today to 145. This means I'm Power Cleaning about 80% of what I'm squatting, and as long as I keep tight, and use some of my hips, the Power Cleans are ezpz. I think I have a ways to go on both of these exercises =p.
I also seem to have hit a plateau with my pullups. I can't get three sets across of 8. I can do 7-7-7, and sometimes 8-7-7, but 8-8-8 has me stopped. Anyone have suggestions? I'm considering moving them earlier in my routine, or possibly dropping the barbell rows before them... going PC -> BB row -> pullups is murder, I'm exhausted by the time I get to them. I wanted to hit something like 12-12-12 before I started weighting them, so while that IS an option, it wouldn't be my favorite one.

Yep its the tourney at saranac lake. Heard a lot of good(read: fun) things about it
As for pull ups, you're fucked in the head if you're expecting to have respectable pull up #s after doing pc + bb row. I usually hit around 12 first set then massive drop off(5 give or take) after any oly workout, and i'd say my back/lats are one of my better muscle groups. You could drop down to 3x5 with weights and go for a linear progression, but pc and bb rows done correctly should be murdering at the very least your back and lats which is gonna make pull ups hard. On the bright side, you can rest easy knowing that you can do way more than that if you dont kill your back before hand

I am a good swimmer but I am very chlorine sensitive (the smell of strong chemicals and perfumes irritates my throat and eyes and makes it hard to breathe). The pool on my campus is indoors so that strongly increases the fumes. (I'm a wimp lol) Outdoor pools seem to be very unusual for Pennsylvania, haha... the one thing I miss about Texas.
The exercise bike does have a lot of settings you can fiddle with-- you can set it like you're going up and down hills so the resistance increases a lot in cycles, for example. I have used the bike a few times, but not really ever tried the elliptical cause it feels funny. I did not know if there is a specific benefit to that, that would make me learn to get used to it if it was better. I guess I will try the bike on high resistance settings. I will also find out if the gym here has a rowing machine (though I am more inclined to use the machines in my dorm than walk across campus in the winter time, so maybe that will be a wash). I was thinking 3 times a week for an hour, because this fits around my class and work schedules, but I honestly have no idea if that's actually a good amount of time, haha. Help?

Saranac Lake is a weird town. It's in the middle of the Adirondacks, and you would never think it was a big or a popular place... But it's got the lake for the summer, where tons of people have cabins... It's got mountains to climb, and beautiful foliage in the fall, and it's got skiing in the winter. It's also only a few miles from lake placid, where the "miracle on ice" winter olympics deal happened in 1980.
Beautiful area though, HUGE rugby tournament, that's actually "international" with a bunch of teams coming over from Canada. I definitely recommend you stop over to Lake Placid and check out the Brew Pub. Great beer, great restaurant, although it'll definitely be busy.
And on the pullups... Yeah, I'm fairly certain that it's progressing on rows and PC that's stunting my pullups. I think I can keep the PC, drop the rows, and then as long as the pullups keep moving upward that'll be fine. Rows are definitely my least favorite exercise anyway.
|
Hope they don't check IDs too carefully...bar tab on my loaded lawyer/teammate! :D
I'd say good call PC > BB rows, my back exploded more with the oly movements more than pull ups/bb rows (upper back still sore as hell from my cj session on monday T_T need to stop being so busy and missing gym sessions,i shouldnt be getting sore!)

I did hear him mention something about bringing a sample of something (he sells equipment) to york, that was probably was he was referring to. And yeah thats her name/age/club so its her. Speaking of the samples...he had more than a few unkind words for the new adidas (orange-red?) weightlifting shoe hahaha. Quick question!
While squatting today, i had a sharp pain in my right leg just a bit below the hip area. Could only do a few reps and had to move on. I also had this pain on Monday but after the first set the pain went away. Wondering if anyone has an idea on why it would be hurting, thanks!
Also here is my workout for today...
Squat: 170lbs 1x2 Bench: 110lbs 3x5 (So weird, couldn't do bench on Friday but today I blasted threw them easy.) Deadlifts: 175lbs 1x5

First time I got it was during my last rep of a set of dips, and it kept coming back everytime I did a heavy set. I eventually got rid of it by using slightly lighter weights for a few weeks while working on my breathing, which seems to be the normal cause of this.

fixed how? I'm just holding my breath during the movement like rippetoe says I should! but yeah that seems to be whats causing it (just held my breath for a bit and tensed my body to simulate the experience, and I felt the pain return albeit not as strong as when I squat/bench obviously)
