Greetings, TL'ers!
Emmett from Justin.tv here. I'm the lead of the gaming team. We think that 2011 is going to be a huge year for eSports and for Starcraft II in particular, and we want you all to know that Justin.tv is dedicated to supporting the long term growth of eSports and competitive gaming!
We're proud of and excited by the success of recent Starcraft tournaments, including the scReddit Invitational, GosuCoaching's Premier League, and RootGaming's Success Pays Invitational to name a few, and hope to continue supporting similar Starcraft events.
We're committed to building the best, most reliable, platform for casting eSports. We're in 5 datacenters already, and we'll be in many more by the end of the year. With more than 300 gbps of in-house bandwidth, we have one of the most robust networks in the world for streaming video. We now average more than 1 million views per day across gaming, and are growing fast.
We got serious about gaming on Justin.tv in December last year when we noticed that was pretty much all we ever watched at JTV HQ. That's why I'm incredibly excited to announce that Day[9] will be broadcasting on Justin.tv starting today! “We were impressed by the level of support and quality that the site offered,” said Eric Burkhart of Day9tv.
I don't think I need to introduce Day[9] to anyone here, so I'll just say that his daily cast was what got me into watching Starcraft commentary last year. Seeing him cast on http://www.justin.tv/day9tv will be a real treat for me personally, and I know the entire team at Justin.tv will be tuning in to Sean's shows on the regular. Day[9] joins all the great players, teams, and casters already on Justin.tv, including TotalBiscuit (http://www.justin.tv/totalbiscuit), Husky (http://www.justin.tv/huskystarcraft), and GLHF.tv (http://www.justin.tv/glhf) and many more. Thanks to you, Justin.tv has become an awesome place to find live Starcraft content.
If you have any questions for the Justin.tv gaming team, we'll do our best to answer them in the comments. Our question to you: What are the best things we can do to support eSports, and Starcraft in particular? Streaming features, sponsorships, events?
To give you a quick summary of some of the cool features we've built based on gamers' feedback in the last few months, here's a short list:
- No Viewer Limits for gaming producers
- Delay Server for tournament broadcasts
- Realtime Transcoding allowing for multiple bit-rate selection
- Global Broadcast Servers
- Chat using an IRC client
- Member channels allowing for guest broadcasters on a single channel
- Unlimited Chat Room Size
- Autoplay for Embeds
- Push to YouTube for All Users with auto-chunking
- Game Tagging
- Unlimited archiving
|
It's awesome that JustinTV is doing this to help out Esports. I espeically love the Delay Server for tournament broadcasts. Great job guys.
|
|
Cool :D
Is the delay thing for tournaments working well?
|
JTV has always been the best quality for me, I quite like it and am pleased at this announcement.
|
Sounds good Day9's channel is marked as private at the moment though. Dunno if this is on purpose.
|
Sick stuff mate, looking forward to the coming changes.
|
Wow, I had my issues with JustinTV, but they seem to be fixing everything. BIG HEART! This is so awesome
|
Unlimited chat room size? For the daily? Oh boy...
|
Wow! Great news! Hopefully, this is more reliable than USTREAM bandwitdh wise.
I wonder how much justin.tv is paying him to transfer?
|
Oh, you spoil us. So much better than ustream.
|
Wow, I'm so happy that JustinTV is helping out E-Sports! I love their interface and the resolution selection is a pretty awesome feature.
|
oh wow, some of the features sound pretty nice. I like the fact that it is so gaming-related ^^
|
Noooooooooooo!!! Why is your site flagged for Peer-to-Peer File-Sharing!???
I know this is good news for some people but this is just horrible for me because I can't watch JTV from school. Oh well I guess the days of watching live are over and I will join the archive viewers.
|
This is great news. I love JTV streams and never have any lag when watching them.
|
Those are some sick features. Unlimited chat room is going to be interesting considering there is 7k + people in there on average.
Justin.tv seems to be the only one with a working app for my ipod touch, which works really great. Love being able to watch a show when I'm not able to access a computer.
|
justin.tv is ridiculously better than everything else, especially for iphone fans. thank you sir.
|
Thats Wonderful!
Are chatrooms as easily moderated via an IRC client on JTV as it is other platforms, and, does this mean I will be able to Stream Day[9] Live on my iPod?
If the answer to that last question is yes, then I will finally be able to enjoy a hot soapy bath at the same time I Enjoy some hot live day[9] action on my iPod.
|
It is AMASING to see how supportive Justin.tv is towards esports. I'm sure everyone in the community appreciate that a lot.
The best thing you could do to support Starcraft is invest in sponsorship, especially in teams, so their players can go pro.
The community can provide quality content and has a lot of people ready to give their time for free in order to make esport happen. What we need is just more salary and more cashprizes and verry few company has the power to do that.
|
Amazing news! Justin.tv is finally starting to shine and look actually professional which isn't to be said for any other streaming website so far.
|
I don't personally use JTV, but I love them for their contribution! Will Day 9 no longer be on ustream?
|
Sounds great! love the work you do for e-sports. Keep it coming.
|
Wow, congratz. I just hope I don`t have as many problems tuning into Day`s casts as I do with the gosucoaching stream. =I
Well deserved Sean. Looking forward to it!
|
Great news, especially that you're working on eSports specific features (delay etc.).. and I guess with Day9 on your side you're gonna get a lot of new streamers soon :p
|
Hwaiting!
This will allow me to watch it
1) on itouch 2) at 360 or 240p, for my fail internet :DD
|
That's awesome! cant wait to watch Day[9] on JTV, ive been saying he should switch for months! ustream is so unstable, there was a 1 and a half month period where people in my area were getting such horrible studdering that it was unwatchable, and i had to become an archive viewer :o.
Very well accepted and appreciated
|
I'm a bit worried. Seems like all streams of JTV are lagging, with high viewer counts. (Yes I did turn it down to lowest and made no difference. I really like what you guys are doing and I believe you find a solution for this issue... (The next funday monday might be the big Test for you guys)
|
I remember back when I used to have some funny disinclination against Justin TV. Must say though, now you are guys are pretty much the top pick. Great job you guys!
|
JUSTIN! Get the codemonkeys working on the iPhone app, it's sort of stinky still!
You have so much potential guys! Best streaming service by far, always has been.
|
yeaaaaaah I can watch on 240p which is to say I can watch
|
As far as the iPhone ap goes, I find the only problem with it is my shitty speed I get with Vodafone..... Grrrrr.....
Through ROOT, I have fallen for JTV. Huge props to JTV for pushing to the front.
|
Are there any plans to get a working android viewer? I love justintv but the fact that there is an ipod viewer but no android viewer makes me a very sad panda.
|
this is pretty cool. maybe it wont be as laggy as it got before sometimes. plus jtv is pretty cool in general supporting the community sponsoring tournaments
|

The reddit tourney with 20k people watching at the same time had no lag on my end. Hopefully it's consistent through the dailies for everyone, and not some people getting the short end of the stick on lag.
|

Yes - you have direct IRC access for modding JTV chatrooms, in addition to some custom mod-helpers like slowmode for really big rooms. And yes, with the Justin.tv app you will be able to stream live to your iPod!
(I am Emmett from JTV btw)
|
Another feature: crap routing for me
|
Does this mean no more working to be an hour early to be in chat one? On the other hand, that may cause havoc.
|
Anyone who supports Sc2 / Esports is a friend of mine. Congrats on converting Day9, i would imagine he's a pretty big draw given how consistently he streams.
Also the delayed server, is awesome for live tournaments.
|
Awesome News, been a JTV Broadcaster since Day1 pretty much. One of the first gamer producers and I love the community and staff that work there. Awesome to see Day9 over at JTV.
|

Same problem here, partner. If only I could take part... oh well, maybe someday.
|
Why is there a password on his channel?
|
Justin.tv has in the past have had problems with too many people from a foreign country for their server to handle. If they are so gung ho about Esports, make sure that each foreign country has double the capacity a fair estimate of viewers to be had in that one country.
Otherwise, Sickly awesome go ESPORTS
|
So this is what an internet takeover looks like. Jeez you guys have in a matter of months gone from being 'Yet Another Stream' to being Starcraft streaming and all through actual quality of service.
No dodgy buying off of casters, no short term deals and as yet no broken promises*. Very impressive.
So as long as you don't mind me avoiding your frankly 'gizmodo' of show page (come on, meebo! seriously ?), I'll be happily watching all your stuff from the TL popup
*(Never got any connection problems to/from Europe myself)
|
wow that's fucking awesome

|
sick! all more to the growth of ESPORTS.
|
So is this Sean's first official sponsor? Congrats sir! Just please don't abuse the /commercial button like some others! :D
|
Yess! Awesome! Btw, Justin.tv is awesome with the lo-fi selections, and amazing Itouch/Iphone app btw.
|
So awesome to hear this.
Used to watch a lot of livestream/ustream (and even had the offline bug for a longggg time on ustream), but as soon as I found Justin.tv that's been pretty much the only stream I watch except for things like Day9/djWHEAT/etc. Justin.tv's entertainment section is awesome as well for tv shows/movies, and the quality/lack of issues has been amazing.

Why not contact your school's IT department and ask why it's filtered? If you don't make noise, it'll never be fixed.
|
the 240p has saved me so much rage on bad internet days, and delay server is awesome
|
The delay to streams will be awesome and exactly what people have been hoping for for a long time. Just some easy, or simple way to prevent possible cheating in that regards. Glad this service is being introduced.
I've used Jtv for my own stream and always encouraged others to do for (especially now with the international # of viewers sorted out). Hope all the best for Day9 and Jtv.
|
Ugh.. really dislike move from a purely selfish standpoint - most justin.tv streams are choppy and laggy for me :I
I hope they expand more bandwith to europe someday.
|
Yes! I've had to watch on the archives because of the video freezes!
|
Justin TV is pretty awesome I find the admins to be very accessible and attentive to the community They are improving so fast it's actually amazing & on top of that they are supporting tournaments and broadcasters Justin TV. what else ?
|
Im so happy about this because Ustream chat is blocked at my uni i will finally be able to take part on the nights i can stay up :D
|
I think that justin.tv has been the streaming service most interested in esports, making it the go-to place for enthusiasts. There are times, though, where the stream has to be restarted due to lag, which can't really be done at nailbiting moments. Please do your best to have enough for no lag with 50k viewers on one stream; quality of stream during the biggest esports events is what can make or break my opinion on Justin.TV
Things I like so far: The justin.tv ipod app. Streaming sites like ustream and livestream always say they are working to make their streams viewable on mobile devices, but never get around to it.
The 'follow' system
Great quality
Things that can be improved on:
The page design underneath the stream is lackluster. Good streaming websites should have a very 'sharp' feel to them. Make everything line up perfectly and get ride of obnoxious links and stream options everywhere. Look at Ustream: notice how the botton of the chat aligns with the bottom of the video? I really like that. I also like how clean the area at the bottom of the stream looks. Try to aim for something similar.
|
JTV FTW! Nice to see you guys looking out for online gaming and the stream quality is ALWAYS top notch.
|
Thanks for all the positive comments! We are actively developing our service to better-fit the needs of gaming broadcasters, and supporting eSports tournaments thru direct sponsorships has more than paid off.
Cheers!
|
whats good about a delayed stream?
|
I hope they fixed the European bandwidth issues, jtv tournament streams have been unwatchable once they hit a few thousand viewers.
|
On February 18 2011 10:36 blopple wrote: whats good about a delayed stream?
So players cant cheat by watching the stream in a live tournament.
On February 18 2011 10:37 Bushidou wrote: I hope they fixed the European bandwidth issues, jtv tournament streams have been unwatchable once they hit a few thousand viewers.
Most from EU dont have this problem. I never had it here in Denmark only a few time did I have to lower it to 480p but worked fine.
|
Yes.....great news. Jtv has always been the best overall quality for me
|
|
Wonderful to hear that they are committed to continuing to support the gaming community and in particular Starcraft 2. Keep up the good work Jtv
|
I wonder if they know TB has officially renounced "shoutcrafting".
Interesting to see unlimited chatroom sizes as well, I wonder if Day's mods are going to limit it themselves.
|

I've had several occasions in the past month where it lagged on even on 240p with low quality, making me unable to watch stuff like gcpl. Must be country related issues then.

JTV is awesome and this is even awesomer news.

Any-who fantastic news, especially given the possibilities of JTV, esp when one watches GosuCoaching's stream or iNcontroL's stream.

Wow tournament delay is such an awesome feature, great work JTV!!!
The options to select bandwidth usage are really great too, especially for people in 3rd world (internet) countries like Australia :p
I remember a couple years ago (was it that long?) Justin.TV sponsored a BW tournament and Artosis called for everyone in the community to switch to JTV as a sign of support and encouragement for their endorsement of eSports. I always felt sorta bad that almost everyone continued using ustream/livestream, but it's great to see a lot of people finally starting to make the switch. Plus having all those extra features and a development team that's really in-tune with the community's needs and desires is awesome.
|
Finally ustream always seems to hate me ,streams would take years to load chats would not load at all now i can actually watch day9 live instead of getting mad and just waiting for the vod.

I figured Justin TV must use p2p methods to distribute video, which is the reason I also can't use octoshape or blizzards downloader with p2p on. Is that not so?
Either way, I can't speak for ProfessorCold but I will never get something unblocked unless there is a legitimate academic reason. JTV would have to work to get off the blacklist that is sent to my school and I obviously don't expect that.

Jesus christ, this is amazing for all the streamers and all the casters. Huge thumbs up ! Looking forward to the coming year
|
Hopefully JTV handles 10k viewers than Ustream - after it reaches that threshold in Ustream.. lag seems to occur.
|
Just to make sure: "No Viewer Limits for gaming producers" means I wont have to see that damn "We've reached the maximum amount of streams for your country, please purchase a premium account"-window ever again? Because that shit has ruined a lot of nights for me!
|
Great to hear this news, I love hearing about services that consciously support eSports, woo!
As a side note, One of my biggest qualms with other services are how advertisements are delivered. I love ads being in the hands of the streamer, so a random ad doesn't pop up in the middle of an important game. It also feels less intrusive knowing that the ads are implemented by the streamers, when the streamers want it.
Also, I would love the option of streamers being able to move the Justin.tv watermark. At this point it does not obstruct the view of the game's heads up display, at least for StarCraft. In some games being able to see a players food count, money, and supply makes all the difference, and other stream services block that information with a logo. I'm not sure if that option already exists for Justin.tv, but seems like important feedback.
Anyway, I've been loving all of the Jtv streams recently, keep up the good work!
|
YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!! I love Jtvs option to choose the quality of the stream (although I wish they'd let you choose quality of VoDs). A huge reason I stopped watching Day9 dailies was because of choppiness.
On a slightly related note, I hope
Global Broadcast Servers means actually global, I remember A LOT of EU viewers complaining every time a tourney was hosted on jtv. Hopefully that's fixed.
|

It's nice to hear JTV is fully behind the SC2 esports scene. I hope you guys get some decent EU servers as well. Oh and Day9 will still archive the dailies using blip.tv right?
|
It seems alot of swedes have the same problem as i do of lag and choppy bits, even on the lower qualitylevels. Since JTV actually took the effort to go post on TL and showing that they care gives me hopes of a fix for that soon enough It's great that more casters switch to JTV for that reason aswell. Great job guise!
|
NOOOOOOO, now i can't watch day9 at work, why justin.tv!? You have made my life shit by swallowing all the progamers who stream with your seductive and wily moneycommercials!!! Now you take Day9 from me? The last bastion of hope in my bleak dark cave? /wrist Well at least i can still watch the saved vids.
|
ustream gonna be pissed lol
|
Sweet! A streaming service dedicated to Starcraft 2 and gamers is going to be awesome! (and instrumental in growing SC2!)
|
Great stuff to hear, love Sean's work especially the Q&A the other night, really great guy.
JustinTV for the win keep up the good work!

I watched it too and there was lag for me on all bandwidthes. I even tested a non JTV stream just to check it and there was no lag. Maybe an area problem?
However, I think also that they do a god job by sponsering all those events.
|
Justin.tv is my fav, so easy to just set up and broadcast :D
You guys are awesome~keep it up!
|
absolutely huge. GOGOGO JTV!!!!
|
|
omg this is amazing!!! and love the no limit viewer aswell!
|
Pretty amazing news! Justin.tv has been the best for streaming in my opinion for a while. Good to see them getting more involved!
|
I've been tellin Sean to do this for awhile. Glad he's gonna finally start making some real money off of his stream.
|
eSports thanks you Justin.TV
We love you.
|
Good! I was unable to watch his stream due to his previous stream provider being bad, I love justintv though, I always recommend it to anyone who is streaming.
|
As Chill would say "for esports".
From what ive seen in the last few months. JTV has really put alot of work into gaming streams. I hope all the new features work well. I also hope their servers can support the weight of day9's stream.
GL guys!
|
finally! i can watch it live now. ustream gave me so many lag issues the last few weeks and still does. goood move sean! and ty justin.tv
|
love the iphone and ipod touch app, sorry to say that i always have lag issues at my school eithernet or wireless i can never get a stable stream even at the lowest resolution.
|
Sooo you removed the viewer limit thing from each country? Cause that was really annoying. So... really good that you removed it if I understood correctly.
|
justin.tv flat out doesn't work sometimes. i can go from perfect streaming quality in 720p to being unable to watch any justin.tv stream in even 240. ustream works great for me 100% of the time. i am disappoint.
i'm in canada, by the way.
|
240p on the daily stream will be a godsend
|
This is awesome!
I find JustinTV to be easily the best of the streaming sites for games stuff. I especially like the quality options available, they're really handy... delay-server feature sounds pretty sweet for tournaments too, I know lots of online tournament players have legit concerns about this.
I also find it to be the least laggy of the big sites way down here in New Zealand....
If there was one thing I could suggest - any chance of making an option in the player so that fullscreen mode stays fullscreen when you click to another app? (for multi-monitor displays). I'd love to be able to keep a stream fullscreen on my second monitor.
|
Awesome new, its a shame that ustream didn't step up to the plate to keep day9 though.
|
JustinTV, god I love them.
|
Awesome, love their resolution selector in the top
|
JustinTV, if you want to be number 1 streamer in E-Sports, you must:
1) offer option to delay the stream by X.
2) be VERY stable.
Do these things, do them well, and you will make lots of money.
|
really hope they dont have viewers limits, i really bad when you are watching a stream and the "you country views have reached their maximun limit" appear
|
Good job Jtv. Treat Sean well. And thanks for being so awesome with esports :D

There's already a delay option which has been added recently, good stuff.
Also "Unlimited Chat Room Size" thank god for that, the insane hunt for Chat1 is now over!

Darksub they don't have regional limitations on Gaming streams That is part of the first changes they made You can rejoice and watch unlimited amount of JustinTV gaming streams from now on
|
I absolutely love the support JTV. Its amazing what you've done for eSports. Fantastic work guys.
|
Wow! great new, I havent been able to watch high quality ustream in months! so pumped.
|
Pretty much everyone has switched to justin.tv since 2011 ! At least some people know how to do their work
|
Smart of Justin.TV to get day9, I mean day9 pulls 5000 ppl per night. Think about the KoTB tourny he had, he streamed for 12(ish?) hours straight and had a at least 10000 ppl watching all day.
|
Very excited for this, justin tv has by far the best quality streaming service.
|
Justin.tv you guys are awesome! I'll be supporting you guys for sure. Keep e-sports strong!

Justin.tv lags for me every single time no matter what I try to watch and how small the resolution is. I'm pretty sad to hear this Well I guess, I'll be an archive only user.....

Might actually be able to watch the daily now. Ustream always lags for me and Justin.tv works a lot better.

Goddamn, this is so much better than Ustream.

Love you guys for all you support for esports! I don't know if you follow Xeph and his prostream but he restreams Korean Progamers. It's really great. Keep up the great work!
|
Finally! Lately Ustream has been so. . . awful. As someone who enjoys watching the daily live, I've been frustrated having to catch the VoDs of dailies because Ustream broke for me 3 weeks ago.
JustinTV seems to be the best option out there imho.
Day9 Fighting!
|
Get rid of all the stupid pop ups when you click the play/pause button. I can't stand JustinTV for this one reason so I will only watch their streams from the tl site. I know you need to make money and all that, but seriously, popups just seem unprofessional.
|
Justin.tv is a god thank you all that you have done
|
Day[9] needs to pay off the student loans, so the add revenue from JTV was prob a huge factor in this.
|
I hate to see all the streams going towards ads, I wish at the very least they didn't play an ad the moment you joined the stream so you could see if it is even worth watching before you commit, but whatever. I guess it was inevitable. It is about time day got some money for his trouble, even if it only amounts to 20 bucks a cast or something.

I love the fact that ads are paying for this content. That speaks towards sustainability and legitimacy, all in one. If they relied on donations or subscriptions, I would quickly become disillusioned concerning the viability of the future of esports.

I agree, the more Western Ads that are viewed in games like SC2, the more these companies will sponsor SC2 tournaments.

Justin.tv is by far the best stream in every regard. I'm glad to see day9 switching over.
|
|
The only experience I have had with justin.tv was at assembly lan when i had not 1 not 2 but 3 steams open at the same time at 720p and I live in Australia. I think its safe to say that I am more then happy with my Justin.tv experience

I use Justin.tv and they are the favorite streaming service I have used so far. I'm glad they got Day9 to join them and I hope the best to both!

Oh god I'm so sorry why did I do this I am not a designer ignore me at your leisure ahhhhhhhhhhh
- Purple - Horizontal ad bar - Why is it down there? No one ever looks down there, bump it up!
- Blue - Share Options - Bump it up to the tabs at the top. Few people will use it, and it's wasting space that could be used for Chat.
- Red - Chatbox - Bump it down to where the share options were so it can be wider, since the timestamp and the user's handle already takes up 50% of the line. Will help to slow the frightening scroll of the chat. Also, could we have a "pop out" option for IRC? I believe its already implemented for the default Justin.tv chat

- Green - Follow/Report - Move the follow up to Followers (Join the ### Followers) and Report to somewhere... else. Maybe up to the top tab bar.
- Yellow - Related Live Channels - Make it longer! Wasted space. Have fun trying to keep it in line with the length of the "More about _______" as they change their descriptions

- Orange - Square Ad - Make it bigger! I have no idea how you guys manage to do live transcodings, recordings of every stream, and pay your bandwidth costs without giving me more ads
Apologies to your design team - I'm not trying to micromanage! It's already a great design!

Justin.tv is awesome, I especially like the multiple quality settings. Ustream would often lag during Day[9] dailies but with Justin.tv I can just set it to 360 or 480p and have a perfectly smooth stream.
|
what about quality selection for vods? and is jtv to eu fine now?
usually could watch most streams now fine in lower qualities (in some cases it worked fine for 720p too) but it seems still abit inconsistent and there were some issues before.
but vod quality is a kinda big thing. for example i missed the majority of GCPL cause of 5 am live times and the vods while beeing in beatiful quality just needing AGES to load.
overall nice to see that a site is kinda commiting to the game thing and even adds features just to make it easier for us people.
|
|
I want to say that the Daily tonight went very very well! Good quality and a very smooth stream on Jtv.
I remember Day9 moving from Livestream to Ustream during the SC2 beta and that was a great choice then. I consider this move a good one as well, just moving on to better things. Justin.tv has some great features and I think Day and his fans (including me) will be very happy with the move!
|
I personally have had the best viewing experiences with justin.tv and am glad to be able to watch Day9 on the best streaming website ever :D
|
I feel bad for ustream, Day was always a highlight of their day. He's got the Midas touch, now Justin.tv gets to experience it. The only thing I don't like about Justin.tv is the only capitalizing the first letter of the name. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT??!?!?!
|
Awesome help for Esport but do you mind maybe changing the way IP Bans work? You can't even watch a stream on your website, or atleast I can't. Also no one ever responds to emails:-/
|
Awesome news! Justin.tv taking over the world!
|
Justin.tv also helped Husky with his banelings parody. )
|
I remember a couple of weeks ago when I tried to tune in to a justin TV cast, and it kept freezing, even on 240p. I hope they fix their problems in EU, cuz Ustream was awesome for me atleast.

whoaa this is good news! grats to day9

Well it plays at 480p but when i see that it doesnt even use 1/5 of my bandwidth the issue of 720p not playing is rather bad. Sometimes even 480p lags... Like during Justin TV Invitational #1

yay i can finally watch the dailies live!!!!!!! i could enever watch the quality on ustream cause it was a little better than my internet could handle. but i can now.

I don't really understand why people make statements like this. JustinTV removed the cap on gaming streams long ago. The only issues have been that their service to europe isn't as good as everywhere else.
|
@JTV: It was rumored (by TB e.g.) that JTV was working on fixing the shaky stability in Europe. I know some people have no problem with JTV, ever, in Europe and some can't watch it at all. I have no idea what this relates to (ISPs, computer or JTVs European Servers) but I'd like to hear it from JTV themselves if they are aware of the problem? Is Global Servers a step in addressing this?
Thanks.
|
I like the changes you've done, I think its really going to benefit broadcasters!
|
awesome switch and great thing jtv is doing. psyched for it all, thanks guys!
|
Good news to hear that Day9 is taking in all the feedback he gets from us, and glad that he's switching to JTV.
|
Delay for tournaments is great
|
justin tv is the worst possible place for me to stream anything
this is caused by my ISP Orange in france i think... its the same for orange users in spain and in the u.k. afaik
i know that this isnt the fault of u guys at justin.Tv but meh i just had to complain :/
|
This is great news, justin.tv for whatever reason works so much better than the others for me.
|
Hmm. JTV gives me some problems on live streams, though vods are always fine and I'm sure they'll iron it out eventually.
This is pretty awesome for them and I'm sure there's some well-deserved goodness in it for Sean as well, so grats all around. Only thing I'm curious/worried about is this feature: "No Viewer Limits for gaming producers", as I'm quite sure limits were reached for some countries during Assembly, though maybe it depends on account type or something?
Anyways, if they can deliver on all said features and more in the future, more power to them, they're definately turning into the go-to place for streamers.
|
I've heard a lot of good things about Justin.tv supporting eSports. They're pretty "aggressive" in that venture as well, but its all paying off! The eSports streaming feature of Justin.tv is pretty amazing as well!
I'm legitimately excited that there's one streaming site that's openly supporting the StarCraft 2 community.
|
fucking awesome ustraem wont work for me so its good news
|
This is sick, I'm in love with JUSTIN.TV. ESP with free vods, I don't have a killing PC machine and I can upload VOD's easily to YouTube
|
Great news, Ive always found Justin.TV to be the best streaming site so am happy that one of the best SC2 casts is moving there.
|
justin.tv is SO MUCH BETTER than blip or any other streaming service. Awesome change, for the best!
|
|
Sweet! I've got to say that maybe 6 months ago i didnt know shit about streaming sites. But during the last few months Justin.tv is probably the one that has made the greatest impression on me. My sincerest thanks.

Day[9] joins all the great players, teams, and casters already on Justin.tv, including TotalBiscuit ( http://www.justin.tv/totalbiscuit), Husky ( http://www.justin.tv/huskystarcraft), and GLHF.tv ( http://www.justin.tv/glhf) and many more.
To give you a quick summary of some of the cool features we've built based on gamers' feedback in the last few months, here's a short list: - No Viewer Limits for gaming producers
- Delay Server for tournament broadcasts
- Realtime Transcoding allowing for multiple bit-rate selection
- Global Broadcast Servers
- Chat using an IRC client
- Member channels allowing for guest broadcasters on a single channel
- Unlimited Chat Room Size
- Autoplay for Embeds
- Push to YouTube for All Users with auto-chunking
- Game Tagging
- Unlimited archiving
Thanks Emmet! These are great news!
I'm so glad you take these things seriously, SC2 is a true spectator e-sport!

I just hope that they'll fix their service for europe.

There is a bug with justintv where you cant see the mouse cursor hopefully day9 wont have that problem.

I love number J and Justin.tv so this is very happy news to me!

I loved justin.tv but somehow I have HUUUGE lags during sc2primetime wich made me sad and angry!
If they fix that, they will be #1 for sure.

This is amazing news. I always enjoy watching jtv streams over anything else because of the bitrate selection and it really seems that they are dedicated to using community feedback and building a great casting platform for esports. My nether regions are pretty solid at this moment.

It's great to see Justin.tv reach out to the community. I've enjoyed watching many streams on Justin now (Idra, Catz, MrBitter) and am excited for the Day9 switch. I will probably be moving my stream over just due to the outreach!
|
i think Justin tv is probably connected to Incontrols big announcement, Incontrol started streaming with Justin.tv, Idra switching to Justin tv, and then Day9...., well anyways thank you Justin.tv for giving resolution option on the streams
|
I'm happy for Day[9], but still Justin.tv is just terrible for europeans (or even non-americans?). Dunno why but it often lags or just takes 100 years to load a vod. So my question: Will Day[9] upload youtube or ustream or blip too? i hope so. Many Europeans are worried cause of this..

Actually this isn`t necessarily the case for everyone. Like I mentioned before, I am based out of Canada and I still have problems tuning into casts like GosuCoaching.com, or watching their VODs as well. Some JTV streams are fine. I really don't know why I have some issues with certain streams on JTV. The rest tend to be fine.

As per wikipedia: "The original Justin.tv was a single channel featuring founder Justin Kan, who broadcast his life 24/7 and popularized the term lifecasting."

Justin.tv was originally a streaming site for ONE GUY, Justin Kan. He popularized the term "lifecasting" when he broadcasted his life 24/7 through the website. I remember the funky helmet cam and other devices they had for broadcasting and at the time it was a completely unique and exclusive idea. Around 2007 Justin stopped broadcasting and they closed the site only having it relaunch as Justin.tv which was a delivery system for ANYONE to lifecast. Thus the site was born.

Dear Justin.tv crew, The best thing you can do to support SC2 streams is to use a unrealircd with anope services. Of course, you will have to modify Unreal to add in slow mode. Also, large ban list limits and unlimited users per channel (or at list a relative limit controlled by services) are desired.
Love, me

This is what worries me about JTV:
http://bit.ly/ecAX73
I personally think the features they've added are top notch and super awesome. They deserve alot of credit in that department. But it's really hard to turn a blind eye to the above article, and many other violations of copyright on their site.
I've expressed this concern to JTV many times (at least 3-4 times in the past 2 years), but typically I always get the same answer, "We provide tools to anyone who wants them to stop copyright violations at anytime." Well how does that make any sense? Even ZUFFA said they had to HIRE a 3rd party to go through and manually remove all the content from JTV. In what crazy world does it make sense that the content creators have to pay to police every site on the internet in order to curb this type of piracy?
I wish they would hire me to "FUCK UP PIRACY" on JTV, cause I would just start banning this shit out of every channel that was airing illegal content. It doesn't seem like it would be THAT hard, but more than likely it could really cut back on their traffic.
I'm grateful for what JTV has done in the past year for gaming, but I'm not sure that makes up entirely for the cloudy future of what could happen after a myriad of lawsuits. Look at Viacom v YouTube. Now YouTube has an entire department who's purpose is to stop any copyrighted content before it even hits the site. Many are comparing the ZUFFA v JTV to that same lawsuit which could turn out to be pretty bad... time will tell.
tl;dr - I think JTV is swell, but the rabid piracy and pending lawsuits are a bit scary to me.
EDIT: btw, I'm not trying to derail this announcement or discredit JTV, I've been asked 30 times today why I haven't switched to JTV, and I wanted to share my reasons for hesitation.

Welcome the the DMCA ? That's how companies have to do it with Youtube and all other user content site. I really don't see the problem here. Either you care about your copyright and you hire some1 so ppl "respect" it on the internet or u don't and let pirates have fun?

Sure it sounds like they got some problems but you make it sound like it so easy to fix and I doubt that.
It would require at least 4-6 fulltime payed people if just ONE had to be on all the time 24/7 and those people would need huge knowledge about copyright stuff. Its not always that easy to tell if something is legal or not.
Justin.tv aint as big as youtube and something like this would hurt them alot I bet.
Also ppl who stream on JTV here shouldnt realy be concerned about this, since even if they were to get closed its so easy to go to another streaming site without loseing viewers, just look at day9 none had problems finding his new stream.
|
If you take DMCA serious, you need to ban 90% of all streams, because they have running copyrighted music playing in the background.
|
Allright, who else here can't view justin.tv / or it's too slow ?

Thank you Justin TV for making an effort in improving the stream. Although there is still some problems for people in some part of Europe, I believe you waill overcome this eventually.

Didn't know JTV could do that and i'm glad they already do. IMO it is a feature of the utmost importance. Just yesterday, in a match between insolence and nerchio, allegations of stream abuse were made. True or false aside, it always hurts everybody. The players, who may be innocent or cheated; the caster, who has to evaluate the accusation, and the audience, which tuned in for SC2 action and not a soap opera.

Yeah same for me, it seems to be a common issue for us Europeans. I guess it doesn't matter much for Day9 since his live audience is mainly Americans but it sucks that every caster/tournament and their dogs are switching. Boooooo!
edit: or go Zuffa I guess If J.tv is indeed broke it's unlikely they will invest in upping the servers or whatnot in Europe.

For now. It's widely known that the DMCA is outdated. But since our country tends to keep laws of old even as we progress as a nation... it probably won't ever make a difference (or change). Additionally, although the DMCA can be used as a "shield" in cases like this, other sites have had much success with self-policing communities, content identifying technology, and other methods.
I do believe JTV is making some efforts on their own, but there's no denying that there's still a crazy amount of pirated content on the site.

JTV is great, this is good news.
My feature requests are around mobile viewing. In theory I can watch 360p on my Android phone using the browser interface since it sports Flash. But it's so llaggy I can't actually click to select a lower bitrate. Please add an HTML bitrate selector. A logged in preference to default to a particular bitrate would be nice too.
Alternatively please hurry your Android app.

Delay server for tournament broadcasts? Absolutely awesome! I love the idea of being able to cast online tournaments live without having to worry about cheaters.
|
Great news! Great features! Thanks justin.tv
|
I'm soo happy for this because.. well Justin.tv is the place to be for streaming now a days. uStream what? Livestream what? :D
|
When JTV first started coming up, I was skeptical. Now they have improved their site and the features tremendously, and I am a huge fan of their services. The other live streaming sites just don't seem to be adapting and catering to the gaming crowd. Thank you JustinTV.
|
JustinTV definitely does a great job with support, and does an awesome job supporting the e-sports community with all it sponsors. Thanks guys.

was just trying to watch glhf.tv on justin.tv when horrible lags once again ruined it and i had to turn it off. sry but that news just sucks for europeans like me :/

Idd watching JTV for me in ireland is painfull, takes 20seconds+ just for te player to connect and start a stream then it periodically lags , I hope they sort their european routing if they intend to be the primary streamer of sc2

Although justin.tv still has some issues for me, I have to admit they have gotten a million percent better since a year or two ago. Hopefully they'll continue to improve.

It's still going to Blip, but i'm using Itunes to DL the podcast uploads every night, so in the morning you have a fresh new Day9 to watch

Thank God! I've been really impressed with Justin.tv lately and have been enjoying all of the streams that have moved over. One of my favorite features is being able to choose the specific quality I want (rather than a streamer, like TL, having to have a high and low quality stream that are separate). The Internet at my apartment is pretty awful, so I end up at 360p most of the time. Mind you, I love that, when I'm at home (I'm in college) or something I can crank it up to 720 or 1080p on the exact same stream.
Hopefully I'll finally be able to watch some Dailies live again!

I do believe JTV is making some efforts on their own, but there's no denying that there's still a crazy amount of pirated content on the site. I've seen things like re-streamed GSL matches on Ustream and elsewhere, so I don't think JTV is the only one susceptible to this. People get pirated stuff on all of the streaming sites, so I think we're just better off going with the one that seems to be giving us the most support and features, which, clearly, is JTV.
Aside from that, while I strongly support the intellectual property rights of fine content producers like you, WHEAT, I don't think that many shows right now face a true danger from it. Are you losing money if someone re-streams Weapon of Choice on JTV? Does Ustream even pay out like JTV does? I'm also quite sure that the lion's share of your audience is going to be watching the official stream. There's also the fact that you only really get the benefits of the stream when watching the actual channel because of things like audience participation (e.g., the Day[9] Dailies). If you're not getting that, you might as well just watch the archive (which, I must note, is now way better for the Dailies ever since Blip started to step up their game and actually made their video player fully functional).

The realtime transcoding and the push to youtube is really nice even for non-gaming streams. Well done on picking great features.

For those wondering, we have grown our datacenters and connections to Europe significantly over the last few months. Justin.tv lag in EU should be a thing of the past! Additionally, questions remain about country / viewer limits through JTV. I am happy to let you know that all user restrictions have been eliminated for gaming streams!
We are currently focusing on creating the best possible chat platform, so please give us all your ideas and suggestions. We are reading this thread closely!

We are currently focusing on creating the best possible chat platform, so please give us all your ideas and suggestions. We are reading this thread closely! How about an easy-to-use implementation of polls? To be frank, I have no idea if JTV has this already or not, but, with things like the Day[9] Daily, I know that an easy-to-use polling system could definitely help streamers make the most out of their streams. You can have interaction a la Day[9] or have tournament casters ask people who they think is going to win a game as it starts, etc. etc.
|
Yeah I've seen the pricing options for Justin.tv compared to Ustream, and I have to say the former blows the competition hands down in terms of price. Planning to use Justin.tv myself once I get more viewers :D

This is great to hear. Starcraft 2 livecasting and archiving is still in its infancy. I remember the whole reason I started watching HDStarcraft was that it was the *only* source of HD videos on Starcraft during the beta. So just getting a taste of the game almost like I was playing it was a big deal.
That being said, and the fact you're watching this thread closely. Here is my feedback.
http://www.justin.tv/day9tv Vs. http://day9tv.blip.tv/
I think you guys should go back to the drawing board on a more concise method of displaying the initial pages. I personally don't like the layout (not sure if any others agree with this). Feel it's a little too busy. Specifically I'd suggest hiding a lot of the sharing, embed, etc. I'm fine with the advertisements (I don't even adblock! :D), and also like the "suggested channels", which I think is very productive.
Also another suggestion...not sure if you have this done already...just throwing it out there if you do. Day9 did a PC World article I believe on how to setup your own internet TV show. Maybe get Day9 to do this on how to setup a show on Justin.tv? Or maybe create your own video. Possibly send this out as part of the registration process. I really liked the article that Day9 did and I think this could pretty far in terms of educating your own users on how to properly setup the encoding process.
Other than that...beautiful stuff. Push to YouTube, IRC support, etc etc...really breaking some ground here on how it should be done! I just wish the visuals were a little more beautiful.
*edit* Registered a different name on JustinTV for a potential project. Saw the "how will you be broadcasting" afterwards. Feel like a bit of egg on my face. :D Still maybe send a quick "getting started" e-mail wouldn't be a bad idea?
|
Nice to see Day9 there will be tuning in more.

JTV's app on iphone is awesome too compared to others (that either don't work or worse.. laggy >.>) my only beef is even on a n router with 10up/5down last night, i was not allowed sound on gosu coaching premier league...?
Very glad to see JTV doing it's part to help out the gaming scene.

the ui is still horrible compared to blib :/
i hope they do some serious redesign or offer user a chance to build there own styles, it just looks really bad.

justin tv is hands down my favorite casting service as a viewer, i'm not on a very strong connection so i completely bow to the 480p button <3
|
Really, really good features you have added. I like Justin.tv the most because I can lower the quality if needed and it still looks fine.
I totally love to see you guys reach out and market yourself properly here as well.
|
Very nice to see catering to the gaming audience. Especially with the built-in stream delay for tournaments, that is huge!
|
Justin.tv has become really amazing these last few months. Best part of it all is that I can watch it at my iPhone. Grats for all at Justin.tv and keep up the good work.
|
A Delay server for tournament broadcasting? Switching my channel to JTV... asap.
Oh wait.. anyone have a healthy alternative to Livestream's procaster?
|
I really like the stream quality from JTV, blows ustreams lag fast out of the water, but I would also like to see a better UI, it's just a bit clustered right now.
|
The only gripe I have with justin.tv and the only reason I didn't switch already from Livestream is the lack of multiple streamers on one channel. I have a gaming community, and we're a bunch of players streaming on one channel viewed by the community. I actually asked about this a while ago on the justin.tv forums, and they basically told me that 1 channel = 1 streamer, unless I share passwords which is not possible for safety reasons (can't trust the whole stream to one person).

an android app would be nice.
android is a fast growing platform and i think it would be easy and benefit-able to make ( since you just need to port it to android)
|
Great news. For me at least, Justin.tv works the best of all the streaming services. It is great that they recognize the potential of E-sports.
|
Can you do something about the fact that many of us can't watch your streams? I don't know what kind of protocol you run but it doesn't even load, and your customer service has been terrible at resolving the problem.
|
I think your streaming service right now is top notch, though I think minor User Experience tweaks could improve the entire package as a whole.
Something simple like memorizing a user's preferred bit-rate while watching a stream and automatically choosing that bit-rate when the user loads up a stream would be nice.
Other than that, like other people are saying, a more streamlined, clean, and professional UI would be really nice. Make it look less like a myspace page, and more of a professional streaming site that streams professional games. Things like this matter to users (though kinda subliminally) - and the better the experience is the better it is for both JustinTV and the SC scene as a whole.
That said, you guys are actually doing a great job. Streaming wise, I truly thing you are the best out there. I think a few relatively simple UI tweaks would really help differentiate your product even more from your competition.

How do I embed an IRC chat instead of the normal chat like day9 has on his channel?

Ghosthunters! WHAT WAS THAT! you guys know what im talking about.
Speaking of ads, do they really have to be that loud t.t sometimes i want to watch a stream but im talking to my friends and i close the stream because the 30 seconds of adtime making it impossible to communicate isnt worth it.

Great news.
I just stopped by to also say how I appreciate the new change to your video player : When we set it to full screen, it wont re-minimize at the second we click on something else...
It really is great that now I can put it full screen on my TV, while I do something else on my computer, instead of having to 'Pop up' the player and only maximize this window.
Anyway, nice change, and thanks again Justin.TV for getting so involved with eSports, we love you guys!(Or at least I do.)

Best news regarding casting I've heard in a while. Justin.TV is a great medium for e-sports.

Justin.tv is doing it right. I just hope they bring there streaming up to part with other similar programs. vVv supports Justin.tv.. most of our streamers use their service.
Glad to see day9 using them.

Love this change... ustream caused so many people problems. I had a bit of lag during the broadcast on Thursday, and simply dropped the quality down a bit. Problem solved. The only thing missing is a nice chat channel, which I'm sure will be figured out soon. Thanks to Day9 and his mods for their continued hard work!

Interesting, hope this works out for everyone.
I am trying to install the Justin.tv android app on my QVGA phone running android 2.1 - And i cannot find it? It shows up on https://market.android.com/ , but i cannot install it on my phone.
Does the android app not support QVGA devices? According to the description it only requires android 1.6

Regarding the commercials I wonder if it's still for US viewers only as I do use Adblock but I would be willing to remove it just for the support of our awesome community.
I also wonder if only JTV producers can run commercials? I mean how do you go about to actually make money from your JTV stream? Are these people who get this opportunity simply picked by JTV because of in their eyes amount of popularity within the community?

I completely agree. If a streamer decides to /commercial, he clearly does not plan on doing anything important for the next 15 seconds, in which case you might as well allow the commercial to play, compensating the streamer for taking time out of his day for your entertainment.
Basically: Scenario A: You have adblock disabled, and when the streamer '/commercial's, you wait 15 seconds to watch a commercial (not missing any content), and the streamer gets paid.
Scenario B: You have adblock enabled, and when the streamer '/commercial's, you get to watch him do nothing for 15 seconds. And he doesn't get paid. Yay for adblock!!

I like the fact that sometimes he /commercials and then watches the ad on his stream anyway, so you're not exactly gaining much from skipping it

I wouldn't trade those 15 seconds for the world, much less for supporting the guy who entertains me for hours on end. I would disable my AdBlock for a tournament for example. If someone is running a tournament and between best of 3s they want to /commercial, sure, I can do that. Supporting a pro player has turned from following them on social networks, cheering for them etc, to watching ads every 7 minutes. Just me helping viewer count, and subscribing etc helps them financially. (Websites do/try to sponsor big streams, I was even asked one time for just a simple GSL restream (Just look at the bottom right of Incontrols stream, I was asked by the same person).
Most of the players who do /commercial after every game are sponsored, they probably didn't pay for much of their computer equipment, and running a stream of you playing, is almost no additional cost outside of computer costs (When I started streaming I paid 5$ extra to triple my upload speed from .5 to 1.5). So I pay an additional 60 (a xbox game) yearly to be able to stream.
At the same time they are advertising their sponsors with names like EGIdrA, EGiNcontrol, LiquidTyler and etc. There are people out there who pay for literally everything and do this out of enjoyment that I have never seen use the /commercial. I will continue to support you guys by subscribing/following on twitter(if I can figure out your last name), and watching your streams, but I won't be disabling my AdBlock unless the number of /commercials is greatly lowered.
|
You guys at JTV have been great, and have a great iPhone app as well, so I'm very happy you got Day9 on your side (not having the quality option on ustream was super frustrating).
2011 is going to be an amazing year in esports!
|
I hope JTV continues to do a good job blocking GSL restreams. It was really bad during GSL seasons 1-3 but streams were taken down within 5-10 minutes for the team league. I hope they treat GSL season 4 the same during the next season so broadcasters will have respect for them
|
I hope JTV will take this seriously as they said they were. Hotshotgg, a famous league of legends streamer who would average 2-4k viewers daily was extremely disrespected by Justin.tv. They provided little to none support even after he tried contacting them through email, forums, and contacting staff members but nothing was done. He suffered viewer limit count too but JTV didn't do anything about it, he reached their ideal viewer count for producers status for weeks but still JTV didn't do anything about it. He's streaming at own3d.tv now but I could imagine it would of made JTV a better esport gaming network if they actually provided support

As you can see from the many replies of this thread, people in Europe (not everyone, mind) are still having trouble with JTV. I am one of those and JTV is actually the only streaming service that does not work reliably (ustream, own3d and livestream work fine). I have no idea if it's our ISPs that's the problem but given that all the other streaming sites are working fine for me hints towards JTV still having issues in EU.
Thanks for reading. /Cuddle

Whenever GOM tv acts up I always hope that I can find a re-stream on justin, the commercial system is soooo much better. Great news that Day9 is going to you. This combined with the NASL support makes Justin TV by far my favorite streaming company, thank you.

JustinTV is taking over Everything first Day9 now even the SotG amazing.
which Day9 should be more active on Sotg if he actually cares.

Currently watching the GCPL, with 200mb down and 100 up on 240p and its still lagging, routing/isp issues are definitely not fixed and just to note aswell I have no issue's with ustream, own3d or livestream:/

JTV is weak. The only reason Day9 switched is $$$$

Still lag for me (240P). But it's not as bad as it used to be. Other stream-services work ok on HD resolution.
Edit: It fells like I get the same amount of lag, no matter if I watch 240P or 720P.

Ye this is something ive noticed too, seems to be packetloss rather than a bandwidth issue

J.TV has the best stream quality hands down. I tend to prefer watching J.TV streams in TL.net regardless of which player it is.
