I just spent four hours talking to an old Chinese man about tea. Best day ever.

This is why its a bad term that people shouldn't use lol. I always thought of oriental as like China, Korea, Japan-ish countries. I may have been operating under a lifelong misconception though.

So, the term oriental means a thing or people "from the Orient", and dates back to I think about the 1400s. The original definition of "the Orient" was everything east of the Nile river, IIRC. This is obviously problematic and the definition has changed over time. It's also different in different parts of the world. I think most people in America today would see oriental as synonymous with "Asian", only in a sort of racist and offensive way. In England oriental means east Asian (what you're referring to) but even that is weird because in England Asian means south Asian. A Chinese person isn't Asian he's oriental! It's a crappy term that presumes you can group a huge number of cultures together and actually make sense of it. And it's even crappier because two people using it may mean different things. At least when you say "Asian" you can be technically correct by virtue of geography. The better term for what you wanted to say would be "east Asian" :>

Words are wind. People can talk about "perpetuating negative whatevers" all they want, but if a word is used without negative connotations behind it, then it's obviously not meant to be offensive and you need to unbunch your panties. There are obvious outliers, words that have always been used or were even invented to be insulting (such as the n-word along with other slurs), but the word "oriental" sure as fuck isn't one of them.

Don't really want to get into a discussion of whether or not it's offensive or how offensive it is.
