I've heard that the FGC (and let's not get into the Smash-Isn't-A-Fighting-Game-argument) really dislikes "esports" while meanwhile t-sports are getting mad that esports have the word sport in them at all. I'm not sure how much the classification matters though because in the end, it's all a highly competitive venture with extreme skill disparity between the top 1% and top 5% (everything fun and exciting seems to follow the power law distributions), tons of spectators, fan interaction, and enough money to keep people at it.

There was a super niche competitive playerbase for the game for years and years and years(like BW), but it took outside forces with purpose to push it beyond that. While I acknowledge that Smash's popularity exploded after the doc, the core community in it is so strong because it survived for a decade+ despite Nintendo trying to squelch the competitive scene. As someone who has been off-and-on involved with the competitive side of the game since the early years, I don't think I would agree that it's a manufactured hype - there are a lot of things to love about Smash, and the community is a big piece of that. I'm still just amazed that an esport managed to survive without online play Is it really? Rather small on the big scale. It's just like any other game people form competitions for really.

(Vote): Post Brawl darkage revival I didn't start caring again until evo, but I'm kinda glad people are still playing the game. At its super competitive the game is very niche, but with friends and just as a party game its stupid fun. Plus watching the competitive side just shows why the game can be hype. Of all the games melee brings the most hype at evo for me, but that's because all of the focus on mvc3/sf4 is boring because those games are just dull to watch until grand finals.

"ESPORTS" I think needs to be held to a higher standard? Idk I think the term itself is shitty but people like using it. Games like BF/Cod/etc have competitions but I don't think people really call them "esports"
