Probably the most remarkable moment in SC2's entire lifespan. Actually makes me think anything is possible. Anything is possible, even killing KeSPA SC2, closing almost all of the team houses, tons of Korean players retiring, no new Korean player in years, and still locking them out of every other tournament with a 1-way region lock Tbh the SC2 Korean scene almost brought everything upon itself except the region lock. The game is still present there only because blizzard actually pays for everything with a ROI probably close to 0 Blizzard wouldn't do something with a ROI of 0... they get advertising, they get warchest sales. If the ROI goes to 0 WCS will be gone.
Not talking about the WCS system as a whole but the GSL part of it is clearly something we should be grateful. Tons of $$$ for a scene that's almost dead (It's saddening everytime you look at the ro32 player list these years)

There's no chance that they weren't prepping for Serral - it's been one of the biggest stories of the year that it would be Serral vs Korea at BlizzCon. Zest and sOs had weeks to prepare knowing the groups. Dark had a full week between groups and ro8. By the way, remember Dark is supposedly the 'foreigner destroyer' and got 3-0d. Rogue knew his semi would be vs one of two zergs. Stats is the only player I could maybe somewhat buy this argument for of the players that Serral decimated this BlizzCon. Even Stats though would have remembered to expect to face Serral in the finals (having lost to him at GSL v World). Korea prepared for Serral and Korea couldn't find the answer.
I didn't say this applied to Serral. I'm just trying to make a point. I've followed the scene for over 15 years and its always been like this. But yea, I'm hoping I'm wrong obviously, and I'd love for Serral to go to Korea and crush a GSL. And his games against Dark, Dark still had slightly better mechanics, go watch the games again.

Good mushrooms. Can I have some too ?

His games against Dark and Rogue are pretty self-explainatory. Still, I agree with you that GSL style games are quite different from weekenders. You are given so much time to prepare for just a few players during group stages and even more time to prepare for just one opponent. However, I do not think it is worth it for Serral to commit to a GSL season.
I dont buy that whole "preparing" to win- argument overall. And I think GSL- format in general is pretty stupid and doesnt even neccessarily produce best players to finals for example. But thats another story. If we think about Serral, how on earth in his current form can you prepare to get good advantage over his playstyle ?
- his basic gameplay is 2nd to none in the world - he is one of the best scouting players in the world - absolutely one of the best holding out any cheeses in the world - has one of the best multitasking and mechanics in the whole world - he reacts and adapts his playstyle all the time - he rarely makes any big mistakes that lead to loss
He has been tested lately now by Innovation, Dark x 2, Rogue, SoS, Zest, Stats x 2 and Maru. Now how many series he has lost or even been close to losing ? I would say 0, against Stats the first time can be argued of course.
The truth seems to be, that GSL isnt just worth the time and effort.

What a great day! Even my friends who are very little in sc2 watched the whole final cheering for Serral.
Great game by finnish bonjwa, props to Stats for not getting 0-4'd.

If you take this argument that 'oh Serral needs to play where they know his style'. Well, he would get way more practice against their styles too. And there are a lot more Serral VODs out there than there are Dark or Rogue or even Maru at the moment.
Who did Maru practice with for BlizzCon ... sOs, Rogue, Trap, probably other Koreans too.
Serral said in his speech "thanks to my practice partners: Lambo and Namshir". Basically he might as well have practiced on his own (no offense to those guys).
Can you imagine what he would be like if he was playing consistently with Korean players too?
This argument that 'oh he knows their style but they don't know his so how could he possibly win in Korea' is so dumb.. he would just power up even more being there.

You would be out of your freaking mind if you think the Koreans Serral beat didn't prepare for him, or didnt prepare enough for him. Even if we ignore the whole "world champion" thing, it's still a truck ton of money, like life changing amount of money, no one, Korean or not is going to take this lightly.

I think serral has mentioned few times he is not looking to play code s really. Too time consuming unless you dwell in Korea in general.

Yeah, no doubt that Koreans prepared for him. They had almost a year's worth of footage of his games, heck they just need to search YouTube and find Serral's stream sessions.
Serral is just too good.

This. I think people making excuses for professional players forget that they are professional players fighting more for than just their ego or MMR points on the ladder, but their livelihoods. The difference between first and second place is more than a year of most folks' salaries, the idea that the Korean players didn't prepare for someone who already proved himself on their home turf is really laughable. This is coming from a zerg who found myself rooting AGAINST Serral in game 4 of the finals (because it actually started to seem unfair!).

Actual StarCraft 2 history.
I look forward to seeing Maru on top of the next Power Rankings.

what an incredible series, crowd was insane and I'm so happy for Serral, i was cheering for Stats but still such an awesome result!!

Checkmate, Charles Murray.

also so proud of Stats, he tore through his group and side of the bracket with ease and definitely deserves credit for making the finals

I honestly still cant believe it Even if the last match ended slightly anti-climatic, the whole tournament was a blast.

Incredibly impressive run by Serral. This surely catapulted him into the top three SC2 foreigners (possibly number one, ahead of Stephano?).
