He was; he cut his teeth in the EU online cups, which he won a lot of, the same that Fraer and Tefel are doing now. I remember him from the match he played for Millennium in the early days of SC 2 vs. Fnatic.Sen - Sen off-raced Protoss and beat him and I found that funny at the time because Europeans were starting to hype him. In retrospect, that was the last humiliating loss for Stephano before his rise.

Stephano was known as very strong online player for quite some time before his outbreak performance, it's just that he only played european online tournaments (and a few french events) which were generally rather badly covered.
