Welcome to the Chobo Team League!
This league was created by noticing a need from lower level players (bronze through platinum) to have a structured and regular league where players could feel a sense of competition outside of the ladder system, as well as experiencing a strong feel of team spirit and being part of a social environment that's often lacking in Battle.net.
We started by compiling all the interested players into a list, and then we sorted everyone into teams by 1) existing clans, 2) race and 3) ladder rank. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that unfortunately we had to leave some players out, but these players will still have an opportunity to participate in future seasons, as they're in our database of backup players.
Thanks a lot for your input and support, and it's because of this community that we're able to launch the Chobo Team League SEASON 1 NA DIVISION officially at Monday, April 16th!
~~~ Do you want to play in Chobo Team League?Just go to choboteamleague.enjin.com, our official channel, and click on Recruitment. Fill out your details and you're automatically added to our database! ~~~
NA Division Season 2
- The season lasts for 14 weeks: 11 weeks for the first group stage, 3 weeks for the playoffs stage
- The week after the season ends (i.e. week 15) is used as a transfer week: more on that below
- 12 Teams with 2 players minimum for each rank (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum); can have more players for each rank
- Each team has its own captain, which acts as spokesperson for the team and is the only player from the team that the organization adresses when discussing anything about his team
- 7 players play in each match; one of the platinum players is used as an Ace
- Each team cannot change its roster throughout the season, unless an unavoidable problem arises
- Teams can only change their players in the week after a season is over (i.e. season 15)
- Players from our backup list will be prioritized over any other players to fill empty spots, so if you want to participate you need to make your registration on http://choboteamleague.enjin.com to ensure you get an early place in the next seasons!
Thanks for your input, support and availability to play in this completely community-driven league! Without every one of you this wouldn't be possible!
A new thread announcing the official start of CSL Season 1 NA Server will be opened in the Tournaments section of the TL forums. Stay tuned!
Seems like a really nice structure and appreciate all the effort you guys put into this league. Now I'm just hoping that some EU players sign up so that we can start that as well.
|
Knocked it out of the park guys. 10/10
|
What an awesome initiative, i hope this become a great success!
|
Awesome guys! Very excited!
Icculus.
|
nice looks awesome.. were the teams premade or randomly made?
|
Awesome! Now We only need some more EU players :D
|
What happens if someone gets promoted to plat in the middle of the season?
|
Team 7: I have added all of you guys with the exception of YellowFlash (450). Can't get that combination to work for some reason.
Looking forward to getting to know you guys.
Icculus.
They get to play in their original rank matches, and when the season ends his team has to make the necessary changes in its roster so that they still maintain a minimum of 1 Bronze, 2 SIlvers and 2 Golds. If someone gets promoted to Platinum, that means that player can no longer compete in this league.
On April 08 2012 06:42 ShyB0x wrote: nice looks awesome.. were the teams premade or randomly made?
Team Kessel and Team PAYBACK are the only ones that have names because they registered as a team and we added the needed number of players to complete their teams. The rest of the players were grouped together based on order of registering, rank and race.
If anyone wants to do some Observer Customs or just want to play some practice games. Lets me know! I am always down.
|
When I made the original thread I never thought it would get this far with quality like this, let me just say that this community is awesome !
Aw I must have posted in the other thread too late
Can we have a 9th team? Or a listing of reserve players?
Indeed you have, sorry about that
We do have a list of the reserve players, and everyone that has registered and didn't get into a team is there. We're keeping track of everyone's interest, and if something comes up anyone of those reserve players can go in. Don't lose hope!
I have added everyone from Team 6 as friends. If you want to practice, please shoot me a line. PM me here and I will send my email, that's the most reliable way to contact me (goes to my phone).
GO TEAM 6!!!! Please contact me, I need practice against 4 gates. I also need practice on Metropolis, Ohana, and Daybreak. I'm so noob I don't even know how to download them.
In other news, I've been roflstomping bronze on the ladder lately, I may end up in Silver next season. What happens then?
EDIT: I'm an idiot, TA is in the map pool.
People are locked into their current league based spot for this season. Promotions/demotions will be taken into account on season 2. This and a more complete rule set will be added soon.
Woah, it is. Japanese is creeping into my English! (There is a "tsu" character, so I mashed those letters together as "tsu" when I read it.)
EDIT: I'm off for now! I'll be back on my own PC which means I'll be trying to contact Team 3!
Are you going to run this through the thread or will you get a website for it?
At this time the thread is the best way to do it. If the league expands enough that it merits its own site, We'll obviously create one. This is still the first season so we're doing things slowly at first, which is why we limited the league to 8 teams at first.
|
Go team 6!!
Also, I'm the other Team6 Bronze.
The matches will be played throughout the week, Monday - Sunday. The deadline being Sunday @ Midnight PST. So you will have the whole week to figure out a time to play against your assigned person. So hopefully it will not pose too large a problem.
Yes, I would recommend for players to find each other through Battle.net.
Also, don't forget your deadlines! If a team is unable to send to choboteamleague@gmail.com their captain's information, team name and ideas for their team logo by tomorrow night, we will have to choose that for you!
I notice some openings for bronze players. can i join?
TEAM 6: Please PM me, I haven't been able to track down everyone's name here on TL yet, nor have I seen anyone on Bnet. We still need a team captain and there is currently 1 vote for naming our team "Evolution." I'm not thrilled with that name, but I don't have a problem with it, either.
I will captain if popular vote (from team) decides as such, but I'm a bronzie, so I don't know that I'd be all that great at it. OTH, organization is what I have a degree in, not SC2 playing :D.
I vote Team Color: Green I have no current opinion on team name.
I can't get soundwave's name to work in Team 8. Only Ravenassasin has attempted to contact me (Thank you for doing so and sorry I missed you on b.net lol). I'd appreciate if everyone in Team 8 would contact me so we could get some of our Teams details worked out such as the following;
* Introduce ourselves to one another and perhaps a little background info for basics. * Decide a Team Name together * Decide at least a Basic logo * Choose a Captain as someone with representative skills and communication skills to comply with orginization and team moral. * Organize days between one another for practice and whatnot and pass info around such as Skype names.
Please do so before the deadline so we can have as much Team ideas and input as possible! :D
Just add your team on B.net and keep in touch with the mods. =)
We've now sent PM's to every player informing them that they were put into a team, and forwarding them to this thread. We hope this makes the process of teammates organizing themselves easier.
Also, we're extending the deadline for both choosing your captain, your team name and a description of how your team logo should look like and to send that to choboteamleague@gmail.com and for adding/dropping any player from the teams to Tuesday, April 10th midnight Pacific. Please understand that the proper functioning of this league depends as much on the players and their ability to organize themselves as it depends on the league's management.
I believe youre locked in when you signed up. so say you get promoted to platinum when season unlocks tues then you still play gold until next "season". I think that is how this works.
If you play on EU servers, there's a high probability that a silver terran is needed.
Just added everyone from Team 7 on BNET.
I'm in SEA, so Sat & Sun mornings here are Fri & Sat night in NA, that would be the best time for me to play / practise etc.
Ok, I've added everyone in team 3. I ll try to be on BNET most of the day (I havent seen anyone online yet, may be its because Im on central european time).
Please check it out!
We need to pick captain, name & logo most ASAPly.
glad this thing has finally kicked off :D hoping for EU team ;_;
Still haven't heard from Team 6 (excluding Ksquared, thanks).
So far, 2 votes for Green Team color. 2 votes for Team Name: Evolution.
Question for mods.
There are 8 players per team, and 5 matches per week.
Is there a rule on which players play? ie are there 5 "main" players and 3 "backups" - and if so, is this something you have assigned / will assign? Or is up to the team's (captain's) discretion?
|
Ok, since I'm still in, Team 4, Is there anyway you guys can message me today? Again, Team 4, message me a.s.a.p! I want to get to geather over skype or some voip with everyone so we can get ready for the league!
It's the teams that decide who plays each week, including which gold player plays in the ace set. The teams then just have to report their matches to management in the form that's stated in the OP.
Hii!!
I have some questions about the EU servers:
How many players are in the rost of the Eu servers in this moment?
Is possible to form some team?
thx^^& gl
|
|
Fantastic idea, community needs more of this.
|
Same question as iwar. Should we have fewer players on the EU teams, there's always the possibility to narrow the teams down to a smaller number, while still keeping the original concept intact. Just a suggestion.
|
We're still compiling a sizeable list of EU players, and yes you can still enter as a team for the EU division. Just contact the management at choboteamleague@gmail.com about it.
As for the people having trouble finding your teammates, please continue to try to find them, and if said players are shown to be impossible to contact by April 10th midnight Pacific, please communicate that to management in the same email as you state your team captain, name and logo. We'll drop any inactive players and if needed we'll postpone the beginning of the season to make sure every team has at least 1 active Bronze player, 2 active Silver players and 2 active Gold players.
I have PMd everyone on Team 6 but FlySociety and shady. I have not heard back at this time. Mods, if they do not reply/show, then what do we do? I have no qualms about filling a slot and playing someone out of my league, other than the potential for loss and how uninteresting it will be for any viewers.
As stated above, if you have players in your team that you couldn't contact by tomorrow (April 10th) midnight Pacific, you list those inactive players together with your team's captain, name and logo proposal in the email you have to send to choboteamleague@gmail.com. We'll drop any players that haven't shown any activity up until that date and time, and if necessary we'll fill their spots with players from our backup list.
YES! I'm on a team! I am extremely lucky that one of players got dropped, which made room for me. Have to download StarCraft 2 back again! :D TEAM 4!
EDIT: It's going to take me 24+ hours to download StarCraft 2 back, because my internet speed is extremely slow. It might not be able to download on time for me to log in by midnight tomorrow, but I am active!
Some questions as me and my friends might be interested in future seasons:
1. Is it a must to follow the league quota? Asking because we might be able to come up with 5-8 people consisting of friends.
2. Can the Ace player play in one of the first 4 sets? (I realise its mentioned max 1 set per player, but if that's the case why not just call it Set 5 instead?)
|
If you can come up with 8 friends that are 2 bronze, 3 silver and 3 gold then you all can join together as one whole complete team.
The Ace player is different then from the first 4 sets. (This may or may not change pending on the first season) The main reason for this is that we want more people to play.
As for calling it the Ace set... it's awesome to be called the teams ace? As I said before we may change it in the next season due to expanding it to a possible Bo7 and other things. :D
|
this gets my full approval, nice initiative!
Just for the record, Team 6 will more than likely need two more silver players.
Don't worry, your team just need to worry about reporting that in the email by tomorrow midnight PT, and the management will acommodate other players in your team if necessary.
No, it's five different players per team match. The ace set is a best of 3, while sets 1-4 are best of 1.
We decide who gets play, right? Like, out of the 2 bronze, we get to choose which bronze player gets to play, etc etc for silver, and gold. and if our team wins a majority of the first 4 round, the Ace match doesn't need to be played? If that's the case, only 1 of the 3 gold gets to play that week? Just making sure I understand how exactly this works.
Cool league but what happens if you catch someone smurfing? I feel like this is something easily taken advantage of
Joke is on the person who bother to smurf in a no reward, bronze to gold league.
PM'd you Kofee. Also, is there a designated chat channel in-game for the Chobo League? Maybe you could create one and put it in the Post. Just so there's a meeting place in the game for all members of the league.
There is one. Its ChoboTeamLeague. Come on in the chat when you log on ^_^
EU people, Ive made a chat channel on EU server now, join ChoboTeamLeague and hang out until the league have enough people!
1. Is it a must to follow the league quota? Asking because we might be able to come up with 5-8 people consisting of friends.
2. Can the Ace player play in one of the first 4 sets? (I realise its mentioned max 1 set per player, but if that's the case why not just call it Set 5 instead?) No, it's five different players per team match. The ace set is a best of 3, while sets 1-4 are best of 1. We decide who gets play, right? Like, out of the 2 bronze, we get to choose which bronze player gets to play, etc etc for silver, and gold. and if our team wins a majority of the first 4 round, the Ace match doesn't need to be played? If that's the case, only 1 of the 3 gold gets to play that week? Just making sure I understand how exactly this works.
That's right, the team decides who gets to play each match.
All the matches are to be played. It's not a best of 5, it's a match with five sets. This means that in every team match one bronze, two silvers and two golds get to play.
Really love this idea! Hope it takes off and everyone has a lot of fun.
If it works out well in NA but SEA never gets a league together I might just sign up for the NA one next time.
Speaking of which did you guys get many / any SEA sign ups?
Annnnd, I don't know if I missed this somewhere: but I assume these games aren't casted right? (from replays of course) Would be a good chance I think to not only have less skilled players in a league, but also perhaps give less experienced casters a chance to practice casting things at a lower level where high level analysis isn't going to be an issue? I'd be semi interested in this for example.
We were discussing this earlier today, still working out the logistics of it. But we already have 2 people interested so unless you've contacted us previously you would be the 3rd. In any case we're still working out the details if we are going to do something like this. :D
Edit: I think 1 or 2 SEAs?
TEAM 4 We still need someone to volunteer as captain, and anyone with a spark of creativity to create a design and name. I've always thought naming a team Boo with King Boo from Super Mario Sunshine would be a fine idea because it's a great game and Boo is OG. Please take this as an opportunity to tell me this is a bad idea and think of a better one, and also nominate yourself for captain.
dipthug
as an afterthought on retro videogame ghosts, I actually think the pac-man ghosts are funnier. ie name "clyde" with the orange ghost logo
Team 4
Please be on SC2 at around 8 p.m. EST. the tentative name for our team is either Killer Pikachu's or the Flying Penguins. :D We need to pick a team logo and colour, as well as a captain.
I put you all on my friends list in SC2, with a note so I know who you are. :D
See you guys tomorrow!
EDIT: I apparently need to read the thread. :D We shall discuss team names tomorrow!
|
So Team 6 looks like the team name will be Evolution and I'll be captain. If you don't want this than contact me other wise I'll have to assume you like it.
|
So since most of Team 5 has been contacting me, we shall henceforth be : " The King's Men" Unless someone from The King's Men is against this- this will be our name and I will be the Captain.
|
Please send the team name, captain and what you would want the logo to look like to our e-mail :D
|
Just got back from IPL4, and have never been more ready to go! Team 4 hwaiting!
Crashing from the traveling but I will be on tomorrow and will add all you guys and contact you in game. Lets get a team name and logo!
|
|
Don't forget guys, you have until midnight PT to send your email stating your team captain, your team name, and an idea for your team logo, as well as to inform us about inactive players that you might have on your team. Send that email to choboteamleague@gmail.com.
Btw, already said in the original post that I would want to coach/help people we wanted to take part of this league
So, if anyone on EU(since I would like to see that the eu league opens fairly soon as well) wants some help, I can do so. I'm a high diamond Zerg, and can play the other races to high plat level and should be able to help everyone in bronze to gold, improving their skills.
Cinimidrak.864
I will only help people, who has intentions of participating in this teamleague - not to anyone who could use some help with the basics etc. but only those who are ready for the start of the EU league
|
I'd contest you for the captain Kofee
|
We only received two e-mails from the teams yet, don't forget that you have until today midnight PT to send to choboteamleague@gmail.com: 1) team captain and his contact; 2) your team name; 3) your team logo proposal; 4) a list of the players from your team that you couldn't contact. We want to begin the league on time!
|
Proud to be a part of Team Kessel
|
Just passing by to inform you guys that Team 5 is now known as The King's Men.
Don't forget to send your information!
|
Team 4: If I don't hear from the majority of you tonight on either skype or ingame, our team name will be Killer Pikachu's. I found a suitable logo.
See you guys tonight! 8 p.m. EST (PM me on tl.net if you cannot make it.)
it's really been a struggle to get ppl on, we are having a meeting right now (7pmest) try to jump on so we can set up a week 1 roster and get some practice games in!
|
Hey guys! We really want to have our EU Division rolling too, but we're still lacking players. We have currently 7 (out of 16) Bronze players, 12 (out of 24) Silver players, and 23 (out of 24) Gold players. If you wanna play, please register by sending your name, character code, race, league and server to choboteamleague@gmail.com, and invite your friends! If you're from NA, we don't have open spots right now but you'll be added to our backup player list so you can play in the future!
Why does this gold and below league seem to have better organization than every NA masters/GM league?
On April 15 2012 10:02 NrGmonk wrote: Why does this gold and below league seem to have better organization than every NA masters/GM league? It's like this in SEA leagues as well. It's just that the BSG players don't get as much opportunity to play these sorts of things while the higher ranked players are used to it, so for us in the low league we're really enthusiastic about playing and it's a new experience. Towards the end of the season things may drop off, but for the majority of people this will be a great opportunity.
Is this still the current most up to date thread? I am lookign for where to send replay file to but I do not see it listed here....
EnderFrigins You have to send your set replay to your captain. He then will reunite all replays from this week and send them to us together with the match report.
And this thread is the one for the current Chobo Team League, the NA Division Season 1 thread.
sounds good for lower leveled players
C'mon europe join up there is still room for you guys, would be really nice to get a EU division started aswell
Yeah we're still short on players to start the EU division. Spread the word people!
Alright guys, how would you like the new Season 2 to be? Which ranks would it have? How many teams? Please give your suggestions!
I think take shakuras plateau and entombed valley out. Put in a map called ESV Ithaca. The map is sick!
I think platinum league should be allowed to play. The fact that TKP now has three players in plat in no way affects my judgement
|
I think it should be kept at Gold, Silver, Bronze. Due to the fact that it promotes players to keep playing and they won't feel like they are getting carried by the players in Gold and Platinum.
|
That doesn't even make sense.
|
I can offer myself as a captain for a team. I'm a masters protoss player with a long background in running teams dating back to early SC:BW days. I'd help with coaching and keeping the team informed of dates and such
|
I think it should be Bronze - Plat, Best of 4 matches, 1 match for each league rank. But if that's too hard to get enough players, make it whatever best suits the masses.
Also, Team OTV would like to play; we have players from Bronze - Diamond.
I also heavily recommend having a website w/ a forum. So much easier than having a running thread on TL. I would even consider to have SC2Clans.org sponsor the event and give you the needed web space and tools to run the league. Just let me know.
Its not an all-kill format, so theres no such thing as one player carrying a team.
|
I would seriously consider taking out Metropolis. Only due to the lag the map causes. For some reason they added too many doodads or something that seriously drops FPS on certain comps (mine included). The graphics setting i use to run Metropolis at 50fps runs all other maps at 100+
|
Metalopolis needs to go too. FFS no other tourney uses it anymore
On June 20 2012 11:43 WarEagle wrote: I think it should be Bronze - Plat, Best of 4 matches, 1 match for each league rank. But if that's too hard to get enough players, make it whatever best suits the masses.
based off of season 1, there werent enough active bronze players throughout the season, so its better imo if this league just ran from silver to plat.
|
Bronze is a tough call. On the one hand, they were the limiting factor in season 1; we barely had enough bronze to go ahead with our original format and even then many of them dropped out throughout the season. However, we had players legitimately go from bronze to gold and even plat after just one season of practice and play, and some of them were just as passionate and consistent as ace match players. In my opinion, we should keep them, but that would also be dependent upon having enough recruits.
And K^2, don't worry, Metalops is out for us since it won't be in the ladder pool. Thankfully I only had to play on that stale piece of rust once this season.
|
Also, we need to discuss a little the way teams are gonna register for Season 2. The e-mail we got from Guns 'n' Roaches, I think, is the best way to do it: they've sent all the players from their team that still want to play, as well as their respective current ranks, all in one e-mail. That makes things easier for us since we now just need to fill the rest of their team with backup players.
|
I think it should remain bronze, silver, and gold, unless we think bronze players aren't gonna be around enough. I know my team is pretty tight now, and a decent amount of us are still in bronze-gold. Silver-Plat works if that's the issue, but I don't wanna see this league scaling to the current player's skill levels, as much as it pains me to say that. That said, season 3 should not be gold-diamond, which is where I feel the heart of this discussion lies. So I'll provide an alternative me and my teammates discuss pretty frequently:
The idea we bounce off each other, is staying active in this league, and transitioning to a coaching role as we outgrow the league. I mean, I stopped playing in the CTL a while back since my team took 5th (sucks we had a better win/loss than some of the other teams in the playoffs), and I'm still more into starcraft since the beginning of the CTL.
It's also provided the opportunity for me to get a couple of my IRL friends to try and play the game, by telling them all about this team league I play in. An actual, organized team league that they can experience, that will help them transition into the SC2 scene permanently. They're now bronze, and I look forward to putting them in this league and training them with everything I've learned/everything my team has learned.
TL;DR: Don't scale the league to the players, veteran players take up coaching roles/help the administrators in the league. Give back.
|
The main problem with BSG is that their is not enough bronzies to go around. Most of the bronzies from last season ended up disappearing
|
Then expand silver? I feel like the skill gap between good platinum players and low platinum players is perhaps too large.
|
Skorbnut, we don't intend to scale the league to acommodate all players that have been playing in the beginning, it would be impossible to keep all players even if we did that. The purpose of going from BSG to SGP, if it goes through, is for it to be the final system by which the league will function throughout its existence. So it would be a definitive change to the format.
The bronze problem isn't because we don't inherently want bronze players out of the league: all five of us would love if we could keep bronze in the league. The problem is that bronze players usually are too few, inconsistent and uninterested in a persistent system to justify keeping them. However, the decision to keep bronze players or not will depend entirely on having enough of them so we can justify keeping them.
|
Fair enough I suppose. My issue still lies with platinum players though. In my opinion, everyone between bronze and gold is more or less the same skill level wise, but the jump from high gold to high plat is much larger.
There's a reason why daily tournaments go from bronze silver gold to plat and diamond and then to masters+. The jump in skill between leagues becomes larger the higher up you go. That's why SGP worries me, even in a team league sense.
If we keep around someone on our team that just hit plat for season 2, and a different team gets a couple new plat players that are high plat and ready to make the jump to diamond, those games will be horrendously one sided throughout the entire season, more so than other league break downs.
I feel like I'm not quite getting across the point I want to make. Does anyone understand what I'm getting at?
|
If anyone have space on a team let me know
|
Okay - redefined my thoughts a bit while I was using the restroom.
First of all, my arguement works against me, since I will soon be reaching platinum if I ladder at the rate I started laddering last week, so keep that in mind. My arguement would disqualify me from competing in this league.
I'll start with this: This league was made for noobs. That should be our focus.
What is a chobo?
A chobo should equate to being a noob pretty much, I'm sure we all agree on that. When is that cut off? Is it by the time you reach a certain league? Is it by a time you reach a certain level of macro skill?
I'd argue it's by the time you can macro out of combat sufficiently, knowing when to expand, and how to effectively spend your money, without queuing up a ton of stuff. Which, as I can see from my play beginning to take that form, will be low platinum.
Platinum level players are the top 40% of players that play starcraft, right? Why are we focusing on them? Shouldn't we be helping out the newer players?
If we're struggling to get bronzies, why don't we (definitely myself included) get off our lazy asses and look for bronzes that are committed to the league? The players from season one could easily reach out and show how much this league helps, and how great the people are that they play. Starcraft 2 has an awesome community. This league has proven that. So why don't we reach out to them, instead of expecting them to come to us?
I know we could probably get a decent amount from Day9's chat during dailies. Or, as I'm going to do when I get home tonight, contact Day9, tell him about what we're doing, and ask if he could mention it during a daily? We could also mention it on reddit. Or, we could use it as a tool to try and get people into starcraft.
Let's try and use this to expand the scene we know and love. I'm willing to put in the work. I know a few of my guys are too. The admins do enough for the league. Let's try and get the playerbase more active and involved. Wasn't that the point of this league in the first place? Help give people a greater sense of community and help out the SC2 scene to be more sociable/noob friendly.
|
Yeah you raise some good points. We're discussing this stuff at the moment, we'll get to you guys later. Meanwhile you can give more suggestions on what stuff you would like to see in CTL.
|
One of the biggest suggestions I have is that non-Ace matches be Best of 3's. Too much luck rides on just 1 game, and is not a true representation of one's skill. Besides, some people put a lot of work in to practicing on a map and against a certain race to only get to play 1 game per week. At least give them a Bo3. I could even argue for a Bo5.
Another suggestion I have is to allow bronze to play but not have a mandatory bronze match. Any bronze who joins a team and practices is likely to be in silver or better by the end of the season anyway.
An even more far fetched idea, don't have set league match ups at all. Just let teams submit a line up, and no one knows before hand if they are going up against a bronze that week or a gold. You could keep the ace match set at a Plat. vs Plat. only. This will give the lower league guys more of a chance to play better players in a competitive match, which is a great way to get better.
|
There is a much bigger skill disparity between bronze's than platinums. Bronze includes EVERYONE below silver. People that are just learning the game, people that make bunkers and turtle on one base, all the way up to those players (many of whom are in this league) who have a working knowledge of build orders/strategy but just don't have the correct mindset/priorities (focusing on micro rather than learning solid macro, for example). Platinum is actually just gold with better cheese.
Either way, I wouldn't mind transitioning more into a coaching role, but I think plats are just chobos who are more dedicated to the game.
And the idea of having non-league set matches (bronze vs silver, etc) is just crazy.
|
"I'd argue it's by the time you can macro out of combat sufficiently, knowing when to expand, and how to effectively spend your money, without queuing up a ton of stuff. Which, as I can see from my play beginning to take that form, will be low platinum."
If you can do this, you will end up in diamond/masters. I went from silver to highish plat (rank 20) using the same build order in all matchups and I STILL make basic mistakes. Platinum players just aren't much different than gold players.
Nah, there are so many people who regularly play in BSG tournaments and they don't complain. And playing against better people makes you a better player yourself. When I first started out playing at the bottom of bronze, I played in a weekly BSG series, getting my ass kicked in the first round every week, and that competition helped drive me up to silver within weeks, and gold not long after.
Besides, the bottom of the barrel bronze player is going to be practicing with his teammates to get better, and almost all those teammates are going to be higher leagues than him as well. Is that crazy too?
I don't see how randomly adding free wins/losses (bronze vs gold) will be an improvement to the format. Playing against better players only matters once you pass a certain threshold of skill. People in bronze don't need to be playing against better players, they need to be learning a simple build order and executing it cleanly. I got from bronze to gold basically just practicing against AI using the filtersc tutorials. If I hadn't done that, and had instead been thrown into matches against much better players and told that it will help me improve, I probably would still be in bronze.
|
Keep Bronze - Gold. If we have enough Platinum interest, I'd say then consider adding a Platinum tier to the format.
Personally, I'd like to see a Black Belt league evolve out of this, for Platinum-Diamond in a more pro-league style to get the better players whistles whetted for moving up and what they'll face if they try to go pro. But CTL is the vehicle to get newbs, nubs, noobs, and chobos out of their suckiness (and I'm still here) and into the better brackets.
I'd really like to see more distribution among the leagues, i.e. more bronze matches. Was it due to lack of bronze interest that we only had 1 bronze, but 2 silver and 2 gold matches?
Also, while I like biggish teams on paper, it might be easier to manage if each team was 1 bronze, 1 silver, and 1 gold, and they all played a bo3. This would encourage more practice, and if you can show up for one match, there's not much reason you can't show up for 3. Backup players I would suggest all go into a central pool and are assigned to teams when someone doesn't show. The "dropped" player goes into the central pool and waits for reassignment. Dropping 2 or 3 times means you get kicked from CTL permanently.
And BM equals dropping back into the pool.
My 2 minerals.
Most or at least some of the teams have already Platinum players so that is the reason for the consideration of the add.
As for bronze matches, yes, lack of bronze interest is the reason why we made it only 1 match.
Essentially that's what the teams were, 1 for each match + a backup player. Having them in a central pool makes no sense because they do not get the team environment. The teams MAY get smaller due to a format change but not by much.
Bo3's will not happen, you can show up for the 3 matches fine but getting you to send replays to us was basically trying to pull out teeth aside from the rare few. I already went on this in the Season 1 thread, but basically, we said if you send us replays/reports on time and on schedule then we'll think about moving to Bo3 format. This did not happen and things were considerably delayed because of it.
Also, we're pretty much going to be giant assholes next season about deadlines. If you don't send it in on time without a proper excuse like: "My country lost internet so I couldn't contact a fellow teammate through e-mail and some idiot crashed into the local cell tower so couldn't do it by phone. I don't know any of my teammates address so mailing it is out of the question and I failed learning how to do smoke signals in boy scouts." (I exaggerate, but you get the point)
Anyway, the point is penalties will be handed out with much gusto if deadlines are not met.
|
So make it where you don't have to send in replays. Just ask for them if an issue arises and if a player doesn't have them then you can easily say, no replays no proof therefore no issue.
And have you considered using a tournament hosting system instead of havin everyone email admins?
No, and, no. I don't think any hosting site uses Round Robin which is what we use for group stage. Plus having a hosting system wouldn't work inherently since you need to submit lineups before the match week begins.
"Everyone" is 8 people, which are team captains. One of their jobs is to ready everything at the end of the week and send it to us. Something that simple should never be a problem.
Play game. e-mail replay to captain. Boom. Done. Captain just puts it all in one e-mail for us and we upload the reps to the bracket. EZPZ
And yet...suffice it to say that I will be much less tolerent of truancy this season for team GnR.
Regarding bringing in Platinum players, I'm torn. Perhaps a league that is SGP could carry over the current format, with a non-scored Bronze "exhibition match" each week, to provide some semblance of competition, with the reward then being the chance to play as Silver in the scored matches if you work hard enough to earn an upgrade during the season.
This upgrade rule should only exist for Bronze to Silver, to maintain team population. Bronzes would get guidance, coaching, and a chance to show their stuff; if they drop out, it doesn't affect their team, but if they improve enough to upgrade, they can step up and help their team. I think that's a pretty decent incentive structure to do what the league aims to do, namely help newbs learn to walk before they can run in a fun, competitive environment; a chance to make the Varsity, so to speak.
Thoughts?
What about the "bench "got idea that was mentioned by errant weeks ago? I think its essentially lol_robot s idea. Imo the more the merrier. Population was a big problem it seemed. But idk
Also on the issues of having to send in replays... Why do they need to send them in anyways? if both players report the score the same then give that player the win, the only time replays should be sent in is if there is a dispute.
Believe me, I know as well as anyone that it should be that easy, and I wish everyone would care enough to follow simple rules, but it just doesn't work that way. You get people that just don't care sometimes, and it's way to easy to just say, "oh its just a stupid online gaming league, who cares if I don't send in the replays." It drives me freaking crazy sometimes, but that's just what you get when dealing with gamers online.
Also, Binary Beast and Z33K both have round robins followed by playoffs. I can't speak for Z33K but I use BB in the STL and it is completely customizable, albeit a bit finicky at times.
As far as the line ups go, I am successfully (arguably) using email, a website, and Binary Beast to run a team league, where I email out updated rosters each week, post all necessary info on the website, schedule the match times in a calendar, and everyone is to post the results to Binary Beast.
As I stated above, getting everyone to upload their replays and properly report the matches is the hardest part, when it should be the easiest. Other than that it runs rather smoothly with little need for admins to intervene.
Also, I kinda like this idea of putting bronzes on the teams but not having a scored match for them. If they are really striving to get better and are practicing with better players on their team, they will be silver or higher in no time, and ready to contribute. If they lose interest and/or go MIA, its no sweat off anyone's back.
|
It takes like 3 seconds to email a replay. And the issue was rarely replays but more like people showing up. It gave a greater sense of team and community and being able to see my guys games helped especially because captions like myself sent then to the whole team so we could comment and coach. Many players also have tight schedules which they couldn't attend games of their mates so it was an easy way to still participate. Enough reasons for people besides that its easier for records and casting for the admins? ??
Typing from a phone. Bear with.
I'm not arguing that replays aren't a great tool. It was just mentioned as an issue along with people not showing for matches. These issues often kill otherwise awesome leagues, and it sucks. I don't like bad apples spoiling the bunch, so if you have to conform to these people in order to keep the league alive, so be it. Good team captains can still go on requesting replays from their players and coaching as always, I know I would.
You could also just do like what someone mentioned earlier and just really crack down on the people who dont follow rules, kicking them out until you have only good apples left. This is what I probably would do. You just have to hope there are enough good apples left to fill the bushel. (not sure where these analogies are coming from, I'm no apple farmer)
Forgive if I seem harsh. I sometimes just like to play devils advocate, as I find it can often help solve problems.
Except for the fact that they will have much less incentive to stay interested since their matches will be meaningless.
Lol apples. No you're right man. Problem is this isn't a perfect world where there are a lot of people on teams and standby. Thus kicking everyone would lead to only having a few ppl even Active. I think incentive and population are some key issues here.
Now when it comes to leagues I think platinum isn't a bad idea but many people are also right about the different levels of platinum. If anything eliminate bronze or just add more matches to the team. Have platinum as ace . Remember it will mostly even out a few weeks in cause everyone will practice tonight a shit ton just like in season 1.
First point - I think you have to include plats. I agree there's not a great jump from gold to plat, I lose to some golds and beat some plats. I never beat diamonds though.
If you don't, there will be a huge incentive for people who could get promoted to ensure they don't, because this league is more fun than ladder.
Heck, I would rather race-switch to Terran, get reclassified to Silver (as that would be my skill level) and be able to play in CTL than I would have the 'honour' of being in plat and having no community to interact with.
IMO format doesn't matter hugely. Just scale according to sign-ups. If you get 2* golds compared to silvers, then there are 2 gold matches and 1 silver, or w/e.
Second point - I think you should consider splitting up into divisions based on time availability. Some people are available on the weekend and would want to play in the weekend league (eg me), some people are available during the week. This would also make scheduling a match with my opponent a lot easier.
Third point - agree with removing Metropolis due to frame rate issues. I suggest removing Tal d'Arim, just because I don't like it. Perhaps a smaller map pool in general might be a good idea - 5-6 maps instead of 9?
Fourth point - since this league is so much fun, and has generated a lot of enthusiasm and thus player improvement, maybe a more long term solution (especially if player numbers greatly increase) is to have BSG, and also plat - diamond, as separate divisions. It seems like from Master level there's stuff you can start to get involved in (just my impression), but plat and diamond are still kind of amateurs, and within the spirit of CTL. But this is something for a far distant league I suspect.
If you don't, there will be a huge incentive for people who could get promoted to ensure they don't, because this league is more fun than ladder.
Heck, I would rather race-switch to Terran, get reclassified to Silver (as that would be my skill level) and be able to play in CTL than I would have the 'honour' of being in plat and having no community to interact with.
IMO format doesn't matter hugely. Just scale according to sign-ups. If you get 2* golds compared to silvers, then there are 2 gold matches and 1 silver, or w/e.
Second point - I think you should consider splitting up into divisions based on time availability. Some people are available on the weekend and would want to play in the weekend league (eg me), some people are available during the week. This would also make scheduling a match with my opponent a lot easier.
1. The way the format is looking out to be teams will likely be smaller, also pending on bronze players. (Edit: Now that I re-read this it doesn't really address anything unless you know what I'm talking about... lol. But the new format may just eliminate the problem)
2. CTL has basically turned into a weekend league IMO, people are practicing for their matchups until the end of the week so it generally turns out that all matches get played Fri-Sun.
3. Maps are being discussed already, however a smaller map pool is not that good for a team league IMO. I feel 5-6 is ideal for an individual tournament but for teams I generally feel you need more. We will most likely match the amount of maps in the Ladder pool for Season 8. I personally haven't had any issues on the map, but since it is not in the ladder season it is likely we will not use it.
4. For the new format that will be introduced in Season 2, platinum players will probably bring the most entertaining games for spectators especially if they force an ace. So that also factors into the decision of including plats or not.
Multiple divisions sounds good, but first... we need to get that EU league open. :D howLiN and RSS are sorely missing out.
As for a website, I'm fiddling around with things. I could probably just code it myself and it would be much easier but I've already started so plowing through.
For now I'm just gonna address the replays issue that was raised.
My opinion is this: without replays, this becomes sort of a phantom league. Without palpable information that the matches were played, it all gets a lot less interesting. If we didn't distribute replays, people wouldn't be able to know their opponent beforehand, casters wouldn't be able to cast games if they didn't catch live matches, and generally I feel the league would be less interesting to keep up with. More than one time I've downloaded some replay that people told me it was a game I needed to watch. That's a very valuable element from the league, and I'd argue it's one of the most important ones.
The issue of players having to send their replays is really simple to resolve. Just send the fucking replays to your captain as soon as you're finished. You play the game, you save the replay, and you send it through e-mail to your captain. Your captain, at the end of the week, gathers all replays and information, and sends it to us. If this is a hard thing to do to anyone, you must have no idea of what I do every Monday to make the weekly update posts: I literally spend 2-3 hours per Monday in order to get everything done. We're asking 1/10th of the commitment that I have for the league. You simply have to be able to do this, otherwise you shouldn't be playing in a team league that spans throughout a couple of months.
It's really not that hard to send in replays. I literally takes me longer to boot SC2 than to send a replay. I just rename it immediately after the match, Atl+Tab to my email, and send it. About 30 seconds.
I am down for the league whatever happens. I want to play more.
I'm not sure what "bench" you're referring to, but what I'm talking about would work just about the same as last season: teams would have Bronze players that were assigned and permanent members, but the matches they played wouldn't count towards the team's score, unless they were promoted and were chosen to play in the Silver matches. Scored matches each week would be 2xSilver, 2x Gold, and 1xPlatinum, I suppose. Again, this depends on the proportions of the players that are interested in the league.
Regarding replays, I agree with howLin and Dasende: they're easy to send, and I think it adds a lot to the management and strategic aspects of the league to have all the season's games available for viewing. When we watch a league like the GSTL, we expect teams to be rewarded for studying their opponents, and fielding players and strategies that they believe will have the highest probability of success. This also allows for the team to evaluate it's own players, and offer guidance, coaching and targeted practice where necessary.
TL;DR: Replays good, the format from last season should stand.
|
Also, for the team captains that want to keep any number of their players: prepare to organize a list of the players that you want to keep in your roster, players you can't keep due to limits in player numbers, and players that you're dropping due to inactivity/unavailability.
DO NOT send this information yet: just think about your priority players that you want to keep for now.
|
Lol yea I planned on sending a list when I found out what the format would be and how many players I can have still, Ect.
|
Yes that's why I was saying for captains not to send that yet, because we still have to announce exactly how many players from each rank teams will need to have. Just keep in mind that captains will have to rearrange their rosters, and based on that they can start making some decisions regarding that.
|
Can we get an ETA on when this announcement will be um announced?
If I had to choose between a BSG league and a Silver to Platinum league which actually has enough people to get started (speaking primarily of EU here), I'd most definitely pick the latter.
If shit goes haywire, it's not really a big problem. There'll still be more games to play, more seasons to experiment with the format and that will eventually lead to an even better solution.
|
I'd love to know if plat will be included. CTL brought so mh to my SC experience last season. Would love to do it again! No computer for another week.
|
We're all very inclined to going with SGP for now, in a similar structure as last season (SGSGP instead of SBGSG), but we'll confirm that to you guys soon.
|
If the league goes to a SGP format, can bronze players still try out for the silver position?
(Even though I'm ranked bronze, I can defeat silver players. Just give me a try out and I will prove my worth)
Alright guys, we've been talking between ourselves and we can confirm that we're definitely opening spots for Silver, Gold and Platinum. Teams can now organize themselves keeping in mind that they're gonna need a minimum of 2~3 players for each ladder rank in order to participate in CTL Season 2. As for Bronze, we're not ruling out your participation yet, so when we announce the means in which everyone will register, Bronze players may register in the same way everyone else will. What will make us open Bronze spots for the teams will solely depend on the amount of Bronze players registered, so fill those spots!
As I've said, you don't need to send out your registrations yet. The reason for this is that we're working on a new system by which everything will go through, from registrations, to match reports. If everything goes as planned, I think you're gonna be happy with it But we can't show that yet. Stay tuned!
When sign-ups started for Season 1 (more like an interest check), there were sign-ups for both Europe and NA. EU didn't get enough people to fill eight teams though, or at least not from the right league, so it never took off, sadly.
ah shame , whoever organises this PM if you needed an extra team for eu if you do decide to start it up, i have me and my friends who would play, 4/5 of us, we have a plat guy aswell but think you just bronze to gold?
We're aiming for 3 players for each rank for now. Based on that captains can start organizing their rosters.
EDIT: By this I mean that we're thinking of a minimum of 3 players, we're thinking that we might not enforce a maximum of players per team.
I think it would be a serious mistake dropping Bronze out of the league. I mean this is a league for noobs. I propose a BO7 with 1 bronze 2 silver 3 gold and 1 plat.(or 2 gold 2 plat). I know playing in this league helped me get out of bronze and now I'm a gold :-)
We don't plan on dropping bronze, but if there is not enough bronze applicants then we're not going to wait like we did in Season 1 to start the league and just go with silver to platinum.
Truth. We all want to see bronze stay, but we can't justify it if we don't have the sign ups.
Advertise anywhere you want. TL has fairly strict regulations on ads, but spread the CTL goodness to whomever you want, as much as you want too.
So preformed teams will be allowed to join next season as a team correct? I know that some of the teams from last season congealed and some didn't. A few of us have formed a new team and would like to sign up with everyone that has joined without being split up.
Right now we're taking account of all the returning members from NA season 1, after that will most likely be open sign ups for EU and NA divisions. I cannot guarantee that there will be an EU division but I can say that if we have the same amount of interest we had before S1 started we will make sure we get the EU division started.
Just sent an applform for EU League. Looking forward on playing.
Dont mind getting my team to play if you guys are still allowing signups
If all teams from Season 1 keep existing, we can't really register you guys as a team, but maybe you could be integrated as a group in another one. We're still figuring out if every team stays in Season 2, so don't lose hope in getting your own team in the league!
If you're registering as a team member, we have a place in the application form where you choose your team, and we automatically add you to that team.
We hope that this channel will help everyone, from organizers to teams!
Now go register for Season 2! GLHF!
