So HDH2 with Husky and HD anyone?
On a more serious note.
GomTV is kidding themselves about the prices. 20$ without the vods per month? LOL
This will only lead to people putting up the vids on piratebay as torrents or youtube. simple as that. Like with all companies that clearly overcharges. You actually help the cause of piracy.
If you want people to pay then give a serious offer. The offer you are presenting now is just a rip off without alternatives and I can't believe you even went through with that suggestion for the sc2 fans.

???
For $20 you can have satellite tv for a month....

I think they have to consider give it a try free , checking how many people would see it plus ads by audience, than make the viewers pay it . The second option will have less than half viewers and gain.

Free stream 200kbits (with popup ADS and more)
HD stream - $20....
Of course just joking but who knows.... We just got a example from the top ;P

If I'm not mistaken Blizzard is in contract with GomTV, right?
From what I've been observing since the release of the game, it's just one thing and it's that Blizzard wants to make money, and they want to make it fast. They're probably charging a high price for this because it's quite possible that Blizzard might be taking a 5-10% cut on the revenue stream.
I mean paying extra to change your IGN? Releasing the game at $79.99? Offering out trial keys or game time and charging for them? Offering a special edition (special Thor) for a higher price? Disabling cross-realm play, so that you need two separate CD's to play on different servers (thank goodness Korea is still free for now)? Separating the game into three different expansion sets?
As you will know when you bought your SCII CD's, there were 2 WoW trial keys that came along. Why? Not because to get you hooked onto WoW. Maybe that, but because they want to get you hooked onto it at this point in time because they're gonna be releasing a new extension of WoW in the near future (according to my WoW friend).
So what's next? Charging for patch balances? Charging for every 10 log ins into Battle.net?
|
another fun thing to add to this is that they want feedback on their website but i cant write more than like 100 chars per message.
It's hard to get excited for this... really, i just lost all interest in GomTV and looking forward for the good community tourneys instead, such as HDH2.
corporates want ONLY money which makes me sad. You can actually earn money and please people you know.

^^ Not everything have to be blizzard's fault you know? :o Other companies do it too.

Really its the fact that BOTH the stream and the VODs have to be paid for that really shocks me. I mean yes I find the prices for both pretty absurd but I'd be more open to paying some money to have access to the VODs while watching the streams for free. That seems much more reasonable.
As it stands I am not paying a single penny for this. As much as I love SC2 and Artosis and Tasteless casting, GOM is mistaken if it thinks people will shell out so much money for it.

this analogy makes no sense. satellite offers hundreds of channels and even the ability to record. meanwhile gomtv is offering 1 channel, which will rarely be even on.

Yeah and an UFC Pay per view costs more than double of that, and that's only a couple of hours...
These comparisons are pointless...

That was exactly his point For your same $20 you can get a month of all the programming you would ever want or need! So $20 for GOM is too much.

@MisterPuppy that's exactly the point he made with the analogy

UFC viewers are a very very different demographic than SC2 viewers. AKA not 99% students who can't afford $20 a month for something they don't NEED.

There will be free streams, so im not worried. There will be vods on youtube etc, so im not worried.
But what does bother me is that this is the plan to spread esports that Gom came up with. Like... this is it? Of all the possible ways to make money and get people hooked they chose the worse of the worst method. That scares me because if everyone having to pay 50 dollars for streams plus vods is what it takes to get esports to grow, then esports will never grow and all of this is just a waste of time. Gom needs to realize that there are many english cast vods to be seen these days. I cant even keep up with all the tourneys. That makes it easy for some random sc2 noob to just ignore their "product" and still be fully occupied and entertained.
Gom needs to price it enticingly. I cant always be there for the stream because of work etc. I couldnt do it (stay up all night) sometimes during previous seasons and i wont this time either. So thats a waste of money for people like me. So that means we have to get vods as well. I dont know htf vods are more expensive than streaming but oh well.
Low quality should be free and functional. Hi def should be maybe 5-10 bucks for the whole month, 15 if you want the whole month with vods included. Vods themselves should be available separately for next to nothing. And by separately i mean if i just want to watch the idra set etc i can buy just those for like a buck.
Im not angry or offended to have to pay for entertainment. But it is a little frightening that this is the best Gom came up with, when they should be more than aware of how all this functions and who is likely to pay for what etc. Pricing yourself out of business is just weak.

Hi!
I'm broke and unemployed. I want to watch the GSL.

I have a brilliant idea. You play advertisements between games. You charge companies to air their advertisements. You show the companies the huge viewer numbers and make bank.
Revenue minus shitstorm. Think about it.
EDIT: Piracy for the win. Keep it real bitches, we're going to watch your shit for free anyways...

They are already going to do that Just like in Season 1/2/3 haha. They had a few crappy Ads that they played over and over between games and made lots of money off of it. The only problem? They were showing us Korean ads on an english stream... Nice going Gom! If they get some international people, like say... Razer/steelseries/nvidia, who already invest in gaming, they could show those ads, they would be relevant to us SC2 nerds, and we wouldn't need to be charged to watch :\
