You show the companies the huge viewer numbers and make bank. Revenue minus shitstorm. Think about it. EDIT: Piracy for the win. Keep it real bitches, we're going to watch your shit for free anyways... The problem for them is that it's true. We will watch this for free if we want to. The internet always wins... I expected the first seasons to be for free, since it's smart way to get the viewers "addicted to their product". Plus it's a much nicer approach than slamming the cost in our faces a couple of days before the tournament starts. Now we're just dissapointed instead of hyped. A bad move from the GSL, hopefully they'll try something else out or at least make it cheaper!

If he wanted to have a steady income of $ not just once and never again (or he thinks sc2 will flop) he should do: 1) first tournament free stream medium quality and vods coauple of days later (to hook up people) 2) get the numbers from the first tornament and go on a wild world sponsor hunt. They will have the results of the first torunament streaming (how many views in each region, country) 3) then prepare region (country) targeted ADS (should be easy. Check the region from client IP adress and send them the right add) 4) than comes the second toruney. No they offer medium quality stream (with adds during breaks and so on) and vods couple of days later with ads at begining middle and end) <-- get numbers as after first torunament 5) repeat points 2-3 6) next tournament: offer free LQ quality stream with adds couple of days later, LQ vods with adds, Higer quality premium stream with less adds (sponsors would pay more to get a add on this stream) and vods avaliable right after 7) if it works you are set up like old KESPA. Money incoming ;D Sadly since Gom isnt using this method... theirs attitude is to get money fast not worry what will happen later.... sadly this kind of attitude does not bode no good to future of SC2

Limiting your fanbase to hardcore fans who are willing to pay for the stream is perhaps the worst possible mistake you could make for the future popularity of Sc2 on GOMtv and GSL. I hope you reconsider, I really would like to see GSL succeed. And yeah, it will be restreamed and we will watch it for free. Edit: Ok and because I really want to say it. Fuck you for dumping this on us now GOMTV. Fuck you.

So much for wanting E-Sports to grow, you're only going to lose a lot more viewers.

Only going to the event live usually has a charge. Exceptions to this are some things go to PPV like boxing and MMA. Point is, even going to the live event in Korea has traditionally cost absolutely nothing. Most major sports events gain a lot of revenue from selling tickets. e-sports get's no money that way so far.

it is proven through research that a new brand has to be "established" somehow; newspapers for example are very often given out for free the first couple of weeks; then when there is an audience who is convinced that the quality is good, they charge; BUT also the advertisements get higher with GOMTV and starcraft 2 it's exactly the same; nobody really knows how good the quality will be, if the stream will lag, if the matches will start on time, if there will be any problems; in order to gain a considerable audience it is nearly inevitable to provide a low-quality free-stream for the first event; I for instance didn't pay for IEM-HD but will definitely the next time; because the event was great and from the next time on I will gladly contribute; if GOMTV had provided free streaming for the first season, then they would have had the possibility to attract bigger companies for advertising and furthermore could've calculated the price much more precisely; as it is right now there is not much that justifies this approach from an economic point of view....

They should be making profit the same way everybody else does in these situations... Free stream, with lots of advertisements for revenue. What's wrong with that? I think people grossly underestimate the profit you can get from ads, especially with 10,000+ people are watching live with hundreds of thousands watching the VODs.

Well, people will restream it anyways and make more from donations than it costs for the stream. I can only see the hardcore people purchasing this and I think a large chunk of that demographic would rather just watch the free OGN stream than pay $20-50.
