Balancing at lower skill levels as well as the highest skill levels is a noble goal. If it were possible, I think everyone would be in favor of it. But except for very rough approximations, I think it is not possible. The reason is that there is no one set of characteristics that embodies "low level players". Players are low-level because of flaws in their game, and different people may have different flaws. A group of newbies who are passable at basic macro (building workers, units constantly) but A-move everywhere will have a different opinion on what is overpowered than a group of other newbies who are good at microing small numbers of units but bad at remembering to build. With a game as popular as SC2, you'll see newbies coming from all sorts of different communities, so your problem of trying to balance the game among two groups ("experts" and "casuals") becomes a problem of balancing the game among a huge number of different groups. The only way to really do that is to make the game more homogenous. You're much better off providing tools to help bad players become good, which is what Blizzard has done. There is one situation you do want to avoid: where a strat is braindead-easy to execute, but the counter to it requires an order of magnitude more skill. If, for example, there is a cheese which takes Bronze-level skill to execute, but Diamond-level skill to counter, that's a huge hill for new players to climb before they reach the stage where the game is balanced. Having a counter slightly harder than the strategy is fine- it encourages players to get better, but if a player needs to play 100 games before they can expect to beat a cheese, they'll probably quit ladder and start playing BGH and mods instead. That creates a less robust ecosystem in the first place. Overall though, I think that scenario is relatively rare, and that Blizzard did a good job addressing them in the Beta. | ||
