I am currently a mid-platin Protoss player and I have been a high rated WoW player for a long time. Anyone who has played arenas in WoW at a decent level knows that you have to bind a LOT of keys for you character. Therefore i got myself a Razer Naga (the mouse with 17 buttons). I really like that mouse and can use all of the buttons quite fast and accurate. When I started playing SC2 I began to bind also several buttons on my Naga as seen in the image below:
(Note: the buttons are just a "numpad on the mouse" so this has nothing to do with cheating or programing macros)
I am curious if anyone is using similar bindings on a mouse with more than 2 extra buttons or has switched from such a mouse to his keyboard and can tell me what would be faster/better. Furthermore I would also like to know if anyone has an idea for better bindings on the mouse. Because sometimes it is hard to move my army and macro at the same time because i have to to both with my right hand.
TL;DR: binding a lot of keys on a mouse, good or bad?
I have mouse 4 as hatches and mouse 5 as queens, but any more buttons on my thumb would just make it slower I feel. mid masters EU zerg.
Maybe you can use all the tech structures like twilight, templar, forge. But hotkeys you regularly use I would not put more than 2 on the side buttons.
I have a Naga as well, and I rebound the numpad to F1-F12. I use 1-8 for camera locations, and 9 for idle workers. I haven't thought about anything for 10-12, but upgrade structures sound like an idea. I bet Mouse4 or Mouse5 (the other two extra buttons that aren't labeled in the picture) would be useful for warpgates.
As a suggestion for your particular bindings, since you have Blink and Storm on 4 and 7, why not FF on 1?
Its weird I have this mouse also I bought it for Swtor which it was great for. I was playing starcraft 2 before swtor so now that I have started playing again I honestly feel awkward pressing the buttons on the mouse for things like hatches and queens and just use my keyboard. I think would actually have to practice to not do this and use the naga. Either way I love this mouse just cause.
thanks for the advice (: i am definetly going to try putting my camera hotkeys on my mouse. don't know why i haven't thought about that earlier. i will also try to bind the tech buildings but honestly i think i will just forget that during the game because i dont have to select them that often. 10 minutes ago i took shower (i always get the most interesting ideas while showering :D ) and just had the idea of putting all my army-hotkeys (which are 4 right now) on the mouse. so i have my right hand for army movement and my left hand for macro.
@cydearrm: i have tryed to bind forecields on 1 but it didnt feel comfortable because i make forcefields while keepeing the button pressed and it is a bit hard for me to move the mouse while the thumb is constantly pressing against it.
I used this mouse when I first started playing. Played from bronze to gold with this and got from plat to masters using the logitech g5000. 1,2,3 were for my main, expo, and 3rd respectively. 5 was my scout/obs 8 was for my rallys from robos and/or stargate
the only reason I advise against this is because not all mouses have a bunch of buttons, and learning with the keyboard will make you more versatile, like if youre playing at a friends house or something.
I own the naga and use it, but i never use the buttons XD. Honestly they just complicate everything IMO. You should be use to using your keyboard so you wont need to switch what your use to
I like the idea of having the mouse buttons there but i feel like it's quicker to use the keyboard because you have multiple fingers doing things on the keyboard, whereas with the mouse you use 1 thumb to achieve the same things. BUT the extra buttons could be useful for things like forges, extra observers, scout ovies, etc. So there are definitely advantages to having the mouse buttons but I feel like using the keyboard is probably faster (especially if you use grid hotkeys).
- 1-7 on keyboard for army groups and buildings - f1-f6 camera binds - naga mouse buttons for even more camera binds (i rebound the f7-f8 camera buttons to the naga mouse).
So many camera buttons, but I never really found a use for that many tbh so I started using the g500.
I've never used such a mouse. But it seems like pressing buttons with your thumbs would temporarily weaken your grip on the mouse, and hence your precision as well, right? Not sure if its worth it.
I've been using this mouse since beta and am accustomed to it very well.
1- Main production (gateways, barracks) Main Queen 2- Secondary (Factory, Robo/Stargate) Nat Queen 3- Third (Starport/StarGate) Third Queen 4- Main army 5- Main buildings (CC's, Nexi, Hatcheries) 6- Secondary Units (Ghosts, HT's, Mutas/Infestors, Banes etc.) 7- Upgrade Structures (self-explanatory) 8- Third units (same as above) Prong groupkey (Drops/multi harass) Scouts 9- Fourth Units
the rest are location hotkeys, I will never be able to play SC with any other mouse lol
I tried that when I first started with SC2, but changed off from Naga quite fast as I found it uncomfortable for this type of games. It's not accurate enough and so I dusted off my trusty old Logitech g9. But if you don't have same problem this seems like great idea in general.
I use a Naga as well, mid diamond toss. My nexi on one, gates on two, robo on three, stargates on four, obs on five, eight and six. Army on zero, nine, and seven.
I bound control to one side button on my logitech mouse. I also bound shift to another button, but I rarely use it. it saves me a lot of cramped hand positions when making control groups. I am considering mapping Tab to the scroll wheel, but haven't done it yet.
I use a razor naga as well as a mid/low masters zerg. As far as I can tell, you use tell, you use the naga slightly differently than how I use it. In my opinion it is just really odd to have abilities bound to the thumb grid. Also where are your army control groups? do you use the keyboard for that? How I do it at least is have my army control groups on my naga but I use my abilities with the keyboard. We still both keep our production on the naga.
I've tried to use my side mouse buttons to control drops/small groups of units by mapping them to hotkeys 9 and 0 but I just can't seem to do it effectively. I either forget entirely or slow down a lot when I use them
I've not heard of any pros doing this, which pretty much for me means I'll not bother. I still need to use camera hotkeys.
I kept the mouse buttons the same, and rebounded the ingame hotkeys. 0=e and e becomes my substitute for 4, so instead of 4 being all my hatches, it goes on e and instead of 55v66v77v I can go 44v55v66v which fits well with the layout
Aslong as we only have 12 hotkeys available, it will not be worth it. 1-5 is good enough hotkeys for anyone, then you have Q and W which are bound to useless junk from standard, so those are given as hotkeys. Then mouse 4-5 and perhaps Space. Bottomline is that there are only so many hotkeys to have. Cameras would be a possibility though.
