If you're a terran going gasless FE, what's the proper reaction to scouting a 4gate? It's already too late to get gas and make marauders right?

the counter to 4gate rush is and has always been marines. while marauders are good to have against the double gas variant of 4gate (sentries used), a proper 4 gate wont give you time to start marauders. gotta have two bunkers and scvs ready. also it helps to have bunkers hotkeyed so that you can unload your bunkers to chase down his units if he tries to run by the bunkers for a high ground warp in.

Pure beginner here, I just bought SC2 yesterday, and I'm familiar with RTS games on a super casual level (All I did was play BGH ages ago, and I wouldn't even go past bronze league in BW if there was such a thing back then). I want to know the following:

Is there any custom maps where I can practice build orders? hotkeys? A place where I can build any unit and have them fight so I can practice micro. What's a competitive APM rate?

liquid wiki is usually up to date with build orders right?

Thanks in advance!

I like using SALT (just search for it in custom games) because it's really easy to use with the save and load commands. If you're just starting it helps to get use to even the really basic stuff, so you don't necessarily need a really fancy custom map. If you want a better overall grasp of the game, I think the blizzard challenges are actually pretty helpful. You can find one by going to the single player tab, and it's an option on the right side. The other, more difficult, is Starcraft Master, which you can search for under custom games. Liquipedia can be pretty outdated sometimes. Your best bets for a build order are under the recommended threads found on here on TL under the "SC2 Strategy Recommended Threads". Or lets say you want to to know some more about how to play tvp, you can type in [g] tvp in the TL search bar

Yes, there are custom maps where you can repeat build orders over and over, I don't know how you mean by practice hotkeys but I guess you can do that there too.

There are also unit test maps where you can face various units off against each other.

I wouldn't obsess too much about APM and the term competitive is even more confusing, competitive with whom?, I'd say 75-100 is enough to do most of what you need to do but if you want to compete on the higher end you'll obviously want to be higher.

Liquipedia is unfortunately not as up to date as we'd like for build orders just because the speed of the metagame is much faster than people can write properly sourced article especially with a number of variations on a build out in the wild, it usually has to reach a kind of consensus before it gets written up. What it does have is a good number of openings that should get you started.

Here are some of the custom maps I use.

Build order testers:
YABOT
SALT

Good unit testers:
XGDragon unit tester
Sandbox

Just create a custom game and search the maps in B.net. For example, "XGDragon" and it should pop as the only search result.
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

I got into starcraft about a month ago and am still a bronze league player. I chose zerg about a week in and played it ever since. When season 7 started a decided to switch to random because i feared i didnt give the other races a chance and i was right. although i still haven't settled on a race i was wondering whether sticking to one race would help me learn faster. this way i could focus on certain builds. but i also think that staying random until i know for sure what race i will play in order to get a more rounded understanding of the game in order to help my counters. looking for advice!

You guys are great, thanks for the info!

One more question: is it a total overkill to memorize the prices and build time of everything in the game? I've already started making flashcards of zerg units and buildings since they're the race I want to pick. The reason I ask is that I'm just ASSUMING that mid-late game things that I want will be made on demand, but like tyson said, "everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face"

Hi everybody out there.

First i have to admit i am no native. So please exuse my kind of wirting. I have started SC II about 3 month ago, and first i only used my mice. After a few weeks i got the clue to switch to hotkey's. But i am struck. I creep about 30 amp mostly less. I tryed out the multitask trainer from yours. but even at very easy i dont get a chance at all even with hotkeys i misshit them so often that my probe will get killed within seconds and if i keep my probe save i am not able to macro my base at all. Can u give me an advise to improve? Cos i don't want to spend my lifetime in SC II bronze leauge.

Hello,

First thing you'll want to do is go in to the menu system, then gameplay and at the bottom right of the screen tick the "Display Command Hotkey Text" check box. What that does is shows you in game the key you need to press over every button, so when you find youself going to mouse click something or you're not sure of the key make sure to stop yourself and then press the right key. It'll become habit very quickly, though it will slow you down a little bit at first but practice with it.

Second thing you'll want to do is go in to the menu and the "Hotkeys" menu and create a new profile with an import of either standard or grid (or for lefties version if you're left handed) based on whichever you're most comfortable with. Any time you find a key that you think you'd find easier if it were somewhere else go in to there and change it so it makes sense to you. It needs to be intuitive so when you're playing you don't have to think about it your fingers are just already doing what they need to do. Again, after you change a key it might take a few games to get used to it again but it will help.

Finally, and a little harder, don't panic. Try not to get frustrated whilst you're looking for the keys and remember your opponents are equal skill so any mistakes you make your opponent will likely be doing something similar. Just train youself to use the keys without worrying and you'll very quickly get a good feel for them and it will help your play. Eventually you will get used to just tapping between your army control groups and being able to press the keys to macro another army without even looking.

I hope that helps!

so your problem is using hotkeys?

the answer is practice, it comes with time. to help with this I recommend that you avoid clicking on the command area at all, your mousepointer belongs on the middle of the map and on your minimap, nowhere else. every time you notice you click on the command buttons, smack yourself and tell yourself you wont do it again.

as for getting out of bronze, day9 is your friend, hes everyones friend!

Interesting idea, what ever works best for you. I think most people just get a sense for it after playing hundreds of games, you just sort of know it even if you cant qoute it.

2) How many techlabs and reactors should I have on my factories? What is the correct ratio?
3) What is the correct response for iEchoic hellion banshee when playing mech?
4) What is the best opening for playing pure mech in TvT?

Are preemptive storms actually a good idea? I saw Alicia vs Thorzain yesterday and the storms didn't do anything and seemed like a complete waste of mana. I feel you can't use a HT like you would a ghost, and instead they should be coming in mid battle from a flank. Anyone else feel the same way?

I am new to spamming keys to warm up, but I keep accidently double tapping one of my control groups, which changes the camera view, but if I try with my right hand, then I never mess up once. It seems to always be my index finger that double taps. Why does my left hand suck at spamming?

What is the most used inject method by zergs right now? I am a protoss that is playing zerg more lately.. I was doing 55/66/77 injects but that is slower than the backspace way.. although with the backspace way you get queens running around everywhere..

Judging from polls, 556677 method is the most used. Backspace is fastest but unreliable. Korean method is the best.
