Process Send your idea for an interesting topic to the event's administrator via a private message to The_Templar. Two topics are randomly selected using randomizer.org at the start of the event, and then immediately made official. This way, no "cheating" can occur, and the administrator can technically participate as well.
Make sure you read the How does it work? section as well and feel free to ask additional questions in this thread. [/center]
FAQ:
What is the Map Jam & Challenge? The Map Jam & Challenge is a format by and for the community. The Map Jam & Challenge is a regular map making competition. The Map Jam & Challenge wants you to be creative and quick. The Map Jam & Challenge provokes thinking outside the box.
This is a format developed collaboratively by Samro and Scorp, and was motivated by MotM, CSL Map Jam and the Map Making Challenge.
Why do this? It is all about challenging your fellow map makers with some strange idea and together do a 24h map making jam that will produce innovative, fun and crazy maps. From this format ideas may emerge that can be implemented to competitive maps - or maybe not. There is nothing to win like beta keys, sorry for that. I have no give aways, no tshirts. Also I do not own this format. This is an idea that i hope can be run by the community itself, without judges, organization, etc.
I know many will appreciate this. Here it is all about making maps. These may or may not be played. This is not the biggest point. We are looking for new ideas in maps and for new ways to make maps.
How does it work?
Runs monthly.
24 hours to allow all timezones a few hours. Is held in the weekend to allow the most people to participate.
All participants send one topic to the admin via PM, e.g. 'rocks' and 'low main'.
By a randomized process two topics are selected among all entries and made public to start the Map Jam & Challenge. This aspects helps to have no 'cheating' like preparing a map to give yourself more time.
Within the 24 hours participants post the overview in this thread and upload their map to EU/NA (ask your fellow map makers at EU/NA)
Public Vote decides on the winning map. Map makers who think they have the edge in evaluating how good a map is, can message the admin with their choice to have a double-vote.
Win = Fun & Fame
Map Jam & Challenge #8 The Map Jam & Challenge starts Saturday, Aug 31 3:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00) and runs 24 hours. Topics need to be sent to The_Templar via PM until one hour before the challenge starts. This gives the admin one hour to randomly select the double-topic. Via PM we will keep all ideas secret and fresh for the next round maybe and the double-topic is quite a surprise for everyone.
Topics will be announced in this thread.
The previous events were administrated by Scorp, Samro, and RFDaemoniac. In future events, other community members may administrate as well. If you are interested in administration please notify the admin of the most recent map jam.
OK, after multiple attempts at picking the topics which led to impossible combinations (mirror symmetry AND 3 player maps?), I have finally managed to get one that is actually possible.
-Use of destructible rocks stacked on top of each other -3 player map -5 player map -Extreme contrast in attack path options -Nat-to-Nat must be 85 distance or less. -Mirror symmetry -Open Natural -Asymmetric -Extremely defensible mains -Backdoor to main -As many stereotypically "imbalanced" map features as possible
Destructable Allied Vision Towers Basically I'd like to see a map with dota style vision towers, so at the beginning of the game you can see a large proportion of your side of the map (but still enabling cheese play). This adds an extra level of strategy of destroying your opponent's towers to deny vision, while protecting your own.
Race Specific Maps Alternatively I'd like to see what maps would look like if they were optimised for only one matchup (e.g TvZ) in a proleague format.
I actually think both of the first 2 topic combinations could have worked - they'd no doubt be challenging, but definitely possible.
-3 player mirror symmetry was done a few times in BW, such as on the maps Rush Hour and Plasma. -A main with a backdoor could be easily defendable if you add compensating features such as putting the main and backdoor chokes very close to each other, putting a high ground pod overlooking the backdoor which is accessible from the main, or even an in-main watchtower.

You can also upload pictures on TL using the "Upload Image" button on the top right of a reply window. This will upload the picture to imgur as the appropriate forum dimensions, and provide a preformatted link that you can post.
You could try a Fantasy style map combining 3 different popular pro maps. 2 problems though: the first is finding 3 maps with different base layouts that can be spaced out evenly across the map - at least one spawn will have to be away from the corner. The second is that you will be copying me, lol.

Fort Lawson Originally called TORaD (Tactical Ordinance Research and Development), Fort Lawson was demilitarized, renamed and converted into a starship tech research and maintainance facility after its weapons research was declared unethical and prohibited by the Tarsonis Protocol of 2513 .
I don't have time to finish the aesthetics so here's my currently hideous-looking entry.
Amalgam 156x148 Published on NA (probably currently unplayable, I think I screwed something up)
Features/notes: -Layout is beyond retarded -Mains are the bases at the highest terrain level (the ones with about 5 seconds worth of texturing) -All single geysers are rich
Negative Zero did you remember to change the player settings? i usually forget to change that thing when publishing my maps.
Here's the map finished, i hope you guys enjoy it for the next week or so that it will be published, and without more introductions i'm ashamed of present you KTV Something!
Available in [EU] and [Murrica] servers!
//Edit// Oh crap, i didn't see that the submissions had been closed u.u oh well the map is still up for those brave hearths that want to play on it!
Fixed player properties, also reduced the size of the bottom right natural ramp which somehow accidentally got changed from 3 to 4. Technically playable now, if the lack of detail doesn't melt your eyes.
I really like the in-base expansion and third just outside of the rocks of the in-base expansion of the bottom base on Templar's map, definitely one of the more original things that I've seen.
