I've been trying to make a map for a while now, but I have no idea how to make it symmetric.

I've done the whole Copy>flip>Paste thing, but it's extremely hard to make it paste in the right spot.

Is there an easier way?

Use the grid while you're copying and pasting. Then just paste, ctrl+z, paste, ctrl+z, etc till its right. Its annoying but thats how to do it.

Yes, it's a real pain in the ass. If only they had a preview when you're copying, so you could allign it perfectly.

Pretty much.

My personal suggestion is to copypasta small regions, and fill in the less detailed parts by hand. It's a lot easier to copy small chunks over unless you know the exact dimensions of the area you're copying.

Usually when I'm designing a map to be reflected halves/quadrants, I find the exact centre of the map and mark the precise line.

yeah, this.

I usually put a pylon down in the exact center of my map to make getting symmetry easier

make a corner main nat and third or whatever, put a small patch of distinguishable terrain in the corner of the pathable area, seen by having "view -> show layer --> pathing" enabled and then copy it and paste it where needed.

later on you can just use previously copied terrain as a reference point and the "patch" becomes unnecessary.

took about 20 sec to make that map from selecting dimensions.

you can do other symmetry easily as well

just be prepared to spam ctrl-z and ctrl-v plus the rotating/flipping shortcuts a lot.

first make a grid the size of your map with square raised terrain.
then fill in or remove squares on both sides to start
[image loading]
continue doing so, (and save a bunch of stages in case you need to redo or look back)
then carefully carve and sculpt your masterpiece. your welcome.

DON'T LISTEN TO THESE GUYS OR THE OTHER GUY WHO SAID THESE GUYS. What you need to do: design one half of your map, then position the camera so that you can see the part you want copy while the X of the viewfinder is over the origin on the minimap. (Mark with a building or doodad or whatever.) Now take a piece of tracing paper and tape it to your screen, and outline all your terrain. Once that's done, rotate the camera exactly 180deg using the camera editor window. Now fill in all your terrain!

The copy/paste is not that hard once you get used to it. Trust me, after doing my first map by hand (symmetrical) my second map went a lot faster despite it's increased size.

For the by hand method, though, go to view>grid>small and then you can see exactly where the other half needs to go. Also, make sure that you leave more open area at the top (or cut it out using map>map bounds) because there is a larger unplayable area at the top. Test where it is by trying to place minerals places and seeing where they turn red.

Make half the map (approx, if you go over it's fine, just make sure the it's mirrored using the grid method). Make sure you are in the terrain layer and then copy that half of the map. Hit ctrl+v then go to edit>rotate>180degrees. Now zoom waaaay out so you can almost see the entire map. While moving where you are pasting around, you should see a large blue outline of a box. That's where you will be pasting. Line it up with the line of symmetry (the top edge of where you copied from) and line it up with the edges. Click and voila! a symmetrical map.

Hope it helps... I should just make a video tutorial sometime....

isn't there a way where you can import an image below the terrain or something and then start editing/making terrain on top of the image? (and have the image be symmetric before hand, like an outline for the actual map making)

i thought an iccup guide explained how to do that

This guy knows what he's talking about. When was the last time you saw a symmetric map in the ladder pool? If you want to get noticed by Blizzard, you gotta make stuff to their standards.

Lots of unorthodox, convoluted suggestions. Seriously, once you get the copy pasta method down, symmetry is never a problem again. Doesn't take long to get the hang of it.

Also a good tip (if I say so myself) is when you are working with water, the bodies of water cant be controlled that easily and are rather big. Make sure you pivet your map exactly where 1 body of water ends.

To get that to work , you have to start your map by making 1 pool and take it from there. Its hard But doable.

edit: this mostly counts for water in your map on lets say highgrounds or raised pools (see world tree for example)

WOW, some of u guys completely ignored the video.. here i'll post it again, it's practically talking all about copy/paste/rotation of terrain that so many of you are mentioning, yet i'm actually showing it.

when you copy groups of units like resources, always have a xwt in the map's middle. move it one space downs and left before selecting everything. that way you do not even need the grid to copy paste to exact positions.

This is a great video (very nice job =D), but there's a few points I want to make.

First of all, you don't have to copy it before letting go of the mouse. It will copy the highlighted green area after you let go, too. Either way works, so it doesn't really matter, but I just wanted to clarify.

Also, in the video you always pasted and then rotated. You can hit ctrl+v, then before you click anywhere go to edit>rotate>180degrees and then click and it will already be rotated. This really helps when flipping the map around because you can line it up exactly and then click and you won't have any of those lines in the center like in the tut.

Overall, very nice tut though. Very easy to follow and great for an aspiring mapper. =D

Also note that you can ctrl+v for paste, then flip / rotate using keyboard commands before pasting. This really streamlines your workflow when you have to do a map in sections because of shifted symmetry or territories that don't fit into rectangle selections, you can quickly ctrl+v, do your manipulation, click to place, ctrl+z if it wasn't right, repeat. If I'm not mistaken, number pad / and * are for rotate, and , and . are for flip

Isnt it [alt + .] and [alt + ,] to flip? Or have I been using an overkill of alt-buttons lately?

You're probably right, I haven't done it in a while. You can definitely check in the menus; it'll say the shortcut keys. =D

That's correct.

1. Copy it.
2 Click "alt"+"," and "alt"+"." to rotate it and then paste and click at the approximately right spot.
3. Now keep the mouse cursor in exactly the spot you just pasted and ctrl+z to undo the pasting.
4. Paste, adjust your mouse cursor position a little bit in the right direction and click.
5. Do 1-4 until everything is right.

It's just a lot of trial and error, but you just need to click some buttons fast and then this is really really fast and easy

The more annoying thing is replacing all those dumb broken ramps afterwards

Not entirely sure what the ramp thing's about, hope that gets fixed soon. It's still better than not being able to copy+paste though.
