Micro Match is a new map that I'm currently working on which is primarily focused on the micro management of units. The main premise of the game is simple, players are paired against eachother in a variety of arenas, and given an assortment of units that they must kill eachother with. There are no reinforcements or defensive structures available, which means the only tools available to you are your units, your micro and your strategy.
This makes for a very intense, competitive type of play that is both very enjoyable and rewarding. But as well as being fun, it can also help your micro ability in more standard StarCraft 2 melee games. To encourage this, many of the unit arrangements in these battles will be taken from real scenarios in professional StarCraft 2 play, and the arenas in the map will be strongly influenced by the map pools on the ladder and in various tournaments. The intention is to create an environment that is both enjoyable and resourceful for players, so that you can get the most you can out of the experience.
On top of this, when the map is in its final stages it will feature a full fledged ELO ranking system with league rankings just like the StarCraft 2 ladder. You will be able to look back at all your match statistics and achievements, and compare them with your friends. There will also be rewards for various achievements and an active leaderboard that will be updated with each match.
My aim is to create the most comprehensive and actively updated Micro Map on the battle.net servers, and hopefully with the feedback, participation and support of TL and the SC2 scene this can be possible. Below is an overview of the various aspects of the map, as well as an estimate for when it will be 'complete' (paraphrased because it will always be improving) including a progress bar.
Servers: Currrently aiming for SEA, NA & EU
- Up to 8 players per game with 6 observers that can step in if anyone leaves
- Race selection at the start of the game and race change allowed between matches
- Brief vision of enemy units at the start of the match, then fog of war is enabled. Some arenas include LoS blockers as per normal melee maps
- Matches will initially be in Bo3 Round robin tournament format
- After all players have versed eachother the top 4 scoring players will play single elimination for 1st and 2nd place
- Expected 270 battles, 45 per matchup (e.g.: TvZ, PvP) divided into 15 per arena size (Small, Med or Large)
- ELO-style ranking system updated live with each match
- Variety of leagues similar to the StarCraft 2 ladder
- Tracking of wins and losses, total, between races, between arenas and for each battle
- Tracking of mAPM (micro Actions Per Minute)
- Ability to observe other matches either as observer or as player after yours is finished
- User portraits, reward portraits for certain achievements
- Bonus ‘fun matches’ that don’t count towards your ELO and are a little crazy.
To be added, feel free to message me with battles you would like to see in the map for consideration.
These are estimations as to how far the map is complete based on what is left to do
Core battle setup: 80% Arenas: 7/12, 58% Battles: 11/270, 4% Ranking System: 0% Profile/Statistics View: 0% Art direction 20%
The first playable alpha version can be expected in about 2 weeks, though this may be subject to change depending on the situation.

Looks really great, beautiful arenas.
Please include phoenix micro for Protoss And I have always wanted to see Terran players micro SCVs for repair on mech units.
I admire the depth you're going for, and would be glad to help discuss or test...PM or find me on bnet Habakkuk.124

pretty awesome love playing these fun little ums matches when i dont feel like laddering it up

It's not that interesting. Generally it's just move command SCV onto a unit, right click auto-repair "on" and they will smartly do the rest.
|
This is exactly what I've been looking for! You are a great man
Edit: Are you going to create battles that are specific down to unit count? I feel like a "random feature" would work well, maybe in a later version. You could assign values to each unit, and spawn equivalent army values by resources or some other metric. This would obviously result in sometimes lopsided battles, but I think it would be a fun aspect.
|
Can't wait for this to come to EU.
|
I actually thought just today about creating the exact same thing (ELO, specific unit scenarios, statistics).
You should imo, focus on a lot of the standard compositions, ling/bling vs ling/bling, ling/bling vs marines ( / and marauders / and tanks ) , blink vs blink, roach/ling vs blink (this is really cool, because you have to use different blink strategies depending on the Z's composition), MM vs gateway units, banshees vs marines (with and without stim), marine / tank vs marine / tank, ling/roach/bling drop vs blink stalker / colossus.
A lot of potential, the only factor that will define its success is your willingness to commit to it, as it is a metric shitton of work
|
I would love to be a tester :D And looking forward to this map i have a great feeling this is going to get on the top 10 list of custom maps pretty fast :D (live in eu)
|
I would like to be a tester as well if you don't already have enough people to help test. Saeko.233 on US This would be a nice way to see if my micro has improved from playing a good bit of LoL recently :D So far this map is looking fantastic and by the amount of work and effort put in the OP, it looks like you are willing to commit to this map. I really hope you do and are rewarded for all the effort that went into its creation.
|
This needs to be on EU aswell
And maybe i can become a tester?
|
hey great!
Just a suggestion, don't bother making -all- the possible matchups as balanced as possible. A little/or a lot of imbalance creates thought and frustration and eventually better micro. It's also a big thrill when a matchup that looks one-sided goes the other way
|
|
Wow this looks really sick. I hope this works out, and im really looking forward to it =D.
|
Great.
We need a good microtraining map.
There are some but include unexistent units or are very badly balanced.
Id love to have one to train real scenarios.
|
Any prediction when it will be released?
I think you could cut down on the number of battles for now and add more with updates after release while balancing the ones which were in there from start.
If you release the map with 270 battles its VERY VERY hard to check the balance of every battle and make it even, because you need to see a specific battle often enough so you can judge. So i guess its best to start out with 60 or so and balance those with updates after the map is released while adding new ones bit by bit. This would just contribute to the balance
And like i already said i would like to be a tester ;D

I will be releasing it before reaching 270 battles as an Alpha/Beta and I am admittedly still uncertain on this number, but the idea is to keep it big enough to be unpredictable while small enough that one can still get comfortable with all the matches. This number in fact translates to 90 battles per race, with 30 per small medium large arenas, so breaking it down it still sounds reasonable at 270, but this can as most things be subject to change.

A big problem in Micro Tournament was that some of the battles were obviously imbalanced. I'm talking "A-move and win 100% of the times" imbalanced. With over 200 different battles, I can hardly see how you can make it all fair. You should try to include some kind of system that keeps track of the win percentage. This way, knowing a battle is imbalanced would be easy, and fixing it would only be a matter of adding or removing units. I'm not sure how technically feasable that is though. Mafia seems to be doing something similar with setups, each team in a setup having a "setup strength". Maybe ask the creator of that map.
Also, a question: Why 8 players + 6 observers that can join if the players leave? Is it because of your round robin format? Micro Tournament had a single elimination brackets format that would change itself if player left, so that no player would get more than 1 Bye. Though I like the round robin format for having more matches against more opponents, that other format allows more players. Each having advantages, maybe you should make both available? Or how about round robin with 8 players or less and brackets with more than 8?

You make some great points here. To even create 200 battles it would either be the same battles, just larger scale, or just beginning to add in silly unit compositions. I personally would be pleased with battles that are relevant to competitive play. Quality over quantity.

This, I'd be much happier playing the same matchups rather than say try to micro 5 queens against 3 tanks. Maps look nice, look forward to seeing it.
|
Talk about an ambitious project! I hope this has actual battles seen in competitive play though, not things like 1 reaper vs 1 queen, 1 vulture vs 20 slow zealots, 10 carriers vs 16 void rays, etc.

like i said ill help testing (im in us server, posting to clarify)
|
this seems really interesting... I'd be here for testing at the EU ;D Emaily : neocyberd@hotmail.com
creating an US account atm, but I try it without buying the game again ;D
|
I would actually like to see this but with nonstandard units. You could create your own units/abilities for this and have great original matchups. For reference the multiplayer from Myth can be a great starting point.
I just feel that with starcraft's mechanics and how fast units die that micro arena wouldn't be too great. That's just opinion of course. Perhaps an idea for a later project wink wink
|
This seems like it would be amazing to play in, but one question in the arena would pick your units or would they be given by which race you pick to play? Picking units with a small cap would seem like that could be very interesting. But the maps look very nice. I hope it happens

TvT creates a lot of interesting micro- one idea I can think of right now are vikings V mass other other units. Also, phoenix V mutas- something like 9 phoenix against a HUGE flock.

The Phoenix v Muta one: That would not be balanced BECAUSE properly micro'd phoenix's will always beat mutas. It doesn't really matter if one side will easily win vs improperly micro'd units, its more that you want to be microing properly so you win.

I can help testing in the Europe Server (haitike#998).

Ok I've made a good deal of progress in the past week but much of it is behind the scenes, I had to remake some of the core battle setup triggers and update them so that they allowed for more factors to be considered in each battle (such as sentry/medivac energy, unit upgrades and creep). I am also much, much happier with the new system as everything is dynamic, it means adding new battles takes less than a minute. I've started working on the match setups now. I've added randomized match allocation at the start and am currently working on the rotation of players between matches.
I've been making some small progress on the art and graphics of the map, I'm hoping to make it pretty yet practical, a lot of information will be available to you throughout the game but it will be neatly organized and dressed up with custom graphics, so that it is both aesthetically appealing and easy to read & follow. The ranking system will be worked on after the Alpha version of the map is complete, which will simply be an unranked version of the game with a few less battles & maps.
So currently we are looking at
Core battle setup: 100% (revised and improved, 80% or so of the system had to be reworked)
Arenas: 7/12, 58% (same)
Battles: 17/270, 6% (a few more done though this hasn't been the focus of the past week)
Art direction: 63% (slightly more than before, this will be the focus of the coming weeks as it goes part in parcel with the matchmaking)
Ranking System: 0% (this will definitely be implemented but after Alpha)
It is admittedly taking longer than I had anticipated, though I feel confident at this pace that testing will start within 3-4 weeks.
Thanks everyone for the support so far and I'll be sure to keep people posted as I make more progress in this project.
|
Ok, thanks for your report

Any further updates on this?
|
i´m absolutely looking forward to this map! hope it will get uploaded soon!
|
Would love to hear about progress on this map, looking forward to its release.
Some of the micro battles i would really like to see (on the small scale) are zeal stalker vs zeal stalker, zeal zeal stalker vs 2 stalker, zeal 2stalker vs 3 stalker, zeal 2stalker vs zeal 2stalker, zeal 6stalker vs zeal 6stalker, (mainly pvp 4gate vs 4gate), 2stalker zeal vs 2marauder marine (with conc), blink of course, and maybe immotal/zeal vs blink. (on a larger battlefield)

Since your unbanned now:
Any info on the progress? I dont think its good for the popularity of the map if you dont post in your own mapthread for over 2 weeks.

The arenas are great! Can't wait for it.

I have been working on the map, the graphics are taking some time and I recently started studies, it will be finished but it will take a little longer than initially expected. I'll be posting another progress report sometime next week, essentially the spawn system has been fully refined now to the point where anyone can add a new battle to the game, and all thats left is graphics, matchmaking, statistics and the battles (naturally).
|
Still waiting to get back to working on this, I have a few SACs to do for school in the coming weeks but I'll be back on it after that.
|

|
Sorry for not updating, to those interested I'm putting this on hold as I've been very busy with studies, I definitely will continue with the project when I have the time though. I will most likely be free either after exams around December or January next year, and expect a full release probably some time april/may next year though this is just speculation. Upon reflection I was overly ambitious with the due date and didn't think about the sheer amount of work involved in getting everything the way I want it to be. It will be finished, but I'm going to hold back any promises knowing how poor a grasp I have on how long this project will actually take.
I'll keep you guys posted though, that you can be sure of!
|
|
Hey guys, just thought I'd let people who are still curious about this project know how I'm doing with it/where I'm currently at. So firstly to be frank, as most people probably know I haven't touched this map in a long time, mainly because my other maps HOTS Custom 1 & 2 have been on the agenda. There was simply too much work involved in working on two maps at a time, and my off-time was primarily spent on personal priorities.
However, now that some time has passed since HOTS Custom 2 was released, and the map is nearing its final patches until the next major Heart of the Swarm update/preview comes from Blizzard, I will most definitely have a bit more free time to work on maps. So, I am thinking of picking this map up again within the near future. Also, the new Arcade has also been a good incentive for me to finish this map, especially with some of the future prospects of match-making in custom games, as that would naturally be a god-send for these types of maps.
Now as for how much is left to do, fortunately when I stopped working on this map most of the technical nitty gritty stuff apart from the player statistics database had already been finished. All that's left involves adding all the battle scenarios (admittedly this will take quite a while), creating a nice front-end for players, and adding the code to record player statistics. One small upset that I've had is that I have lost all the graphics I made for this map when I accidentally wiped my StarCraft II install, which had all my map-related files in it. Thankfully, I had religiously backed up all my maps at their most recent versions, so the maps themselves weren't lost at all, but this should serve as a reminder to people of how immensely important it is to backup your work.
Also, I was thinking while I taper down from HOTS Custom 2, it would be great if possible if I could get a bit of help from the community in finding some fun, exciting micro battles/scenarios from any recent pro-game VODs/replays. I haven't got any particular standards in mind apart from being pro games, so anything you've seen in the past 6 months or so I am sure would suffice. Now of course this isn't by any means necessary, as I will no doubt be looking for these myself, but it would definitely help the make get finished quicker, and I think would make it more likely that the scenarios are enjoyable, since you the players yourself have chosen them. And of course, I would be happy to give some credit on the map to those who find battles/scenarios that end up being in the map.
Anyway I hope this post helps clear up any questions people might have had about the map, or if people hadn't heard about the map simply peaks your curiosity about it. Either way, I'm very optimistic about things to come, and look forward to finishing this map sometime in the future and hopefully also getting a bit of help from the community in the process .
|
This map sounds great XenoX, I played a lot of micro maps out there but I wasn't impressed by any of them. They would either get boring after some point, have unrealistic match ups that wouldn't help you on ladder, or simply be extremely imbalanced. I hope your map could become the best micro map there.
I'll be happy to test it if you want, I play protoss at high master level.
|
Finally some news. Good to hear that this project isn't dead, it has a lot of potential. Keep it up!
|
I really hope that this project can get further in the near future. I was just remembering all the good times I spent on MorroW's Micro Tournament back in the day when it was really popular on the EU servers.
Good luck, Xenox!

Hey all, Just letting you know that this map is project is back up, and I am currently taking suggestions for battles to replicate. I will be sourcing some myself, though would greatly appreciate any help in getting more from the community, if you have a LOTV battle you want to see in the map and can post a VOD or Replay containing the battle with a timestamp.
I will be updating this thread as I make further progress, but this is the current status:
Game Engine: 100% (finally all done) Tournament Settings and Menus: 20% Matchups: 0% (will need to re-do these as previously it was before LOTV came out. Additional Features: 0% (this is going to be later down the track)
Keen to get more people involved to ensure this map is a success, so if you are interested in what I'm doing and want to help with battle choices, testing, etc. feel free to message me.

Kudos for bringing to life such an old project. Am excited to see the result.

Pretty excited to try this, as a guy who hasn’t played much in years most of my bookmarked micro maps are rather antiquated!
|
Glad to hear people are still interested. Have some updates for everyone. I have almost finished the game itself, and am just finding battles now. Currently watching the Dreamhack Masters to get more battles, so far we are at 20/54, though I will start testing once I get to ~35.
Below are some sneak peak screenshots from the map. Note that the battle shown below is an old one (2012), and will be replaced with a more up-to-date one in the final version. But the below should give you an idea of what to expect. All of the below features in the settings window are working except for the two that are disabled (Group Stage and Veto Option), which I will add in later as the map progresses.
Also I will be looking for Beta testers in the next few days, so if you are interested in helping out with finding bugs and checking the balance of the battles (for balance you need to be at least Masters 1), let me know!
EDIT:
One more feature sneak-peak. Dynamic Arena barriers. This allows me to create an arena of any shape using rectangles. Units within an arena can't move out, allowing different battles to be played out on different sections of the map, enabling a very large number of possible arenas. Note the minimap, where this arena forms a diagonal line shape "\".
|
Hi All,
Good news, I have finished version 1 of the map and am ready to test it with other players. Please let me know via PM or replying to this thread if you are interested in testing the map with me - and if you are PMing me, please include your Battle.net ID and region so I can find you. There are likely to be some bugs in multiplayer, as I have not yet tested with other real players, only AI, however they will hopefully be minor and solvable within a reasonable time-frame.
Ideally players for testing are high ranked on ladder, but I am happy to test with anyone at this stage as it is mainly the functionality that I am concerned about, rather than balance.
|
Hey XenoX! I actually played this map 8 years ago or so! Still remember your name. I'm looking forward to the first public version!

Fantastic, meant to respond earlier but am banned, feel free to hit me up via PM.
Not at home at the minute and don’t have my battlenet ID to hand.
I have a pretty active community of the great and the good of Irish Starcraft that frequently play, and a small play test of a micro map like this might get some uptake for us, could see if we could make an evening or two of it?
|
Hey guys. thanks for the interest. I will keep you posted once we have a working and balanced version of the map.
@MasterReY: Nice to see you are still here. I do remember you as well. Will let you know once I have a working version up.
|
I am excited for this, I played a lot of these maps back in hots/wol and we haven't had a single good option in like 5 years now. I am low GM mmr if you ever want some testing done.
|
Hey all, the map is progressing very well, with essentially the only thing left to do is balance the maps. I am looking for Masters 1/GM Zerg and Terran players to help with testing the map, as currently we don't have any Zerg testers and only a few Terran testers. You will have the opportunity to help polish the map, and get your name in the loading screen. Once the battles have been balanced, we will be able to release the map to the public for everyone to play. So if you fit the criteria or know someone who does please message me.
|
This is getting very interesting. Looking forward to see the results!
|
Hey guys, another update on the map. I'm still looking for Zerg Masters 1/GM testers. However for those interested in an update. So far PvT and TvT have been balanced with the help of ~6 testers we have got so far. We are still needing to balance the remaining matchups.
Below are some screenshots to tickle the itch until we get the remaining matchups balanced. Stay tuned! https://imgur.com/a/hU4V4vh
|
Looks good! Whats up with the mothership cores in every single screenshot? :D
|
Thanks. Those are capture orbs, they are used solely for capturing zones (the rings you see on the map). You will hear more about it once the map is released, but essentially it works similarly to other games with capture points such as Company of Heroes and Dawn of War, and is designed to prevent camping, force engagements across the map rather than just in the middle, and enable more positional play for matchups that rely heavily on it (TvT for example).

We have balance tested the majority of the battles, however there are still a few that need to be finalised. Hopefully we can finish it off in the coming weeks.

Hi All,
Just letting you know that the Open Beta for this map is now available to play on NA, EU, and KR. The below reddit post details where the map is at at the moment. Basically 89% of battles have been balanced, with the remaining 11% to be finalised during the Beta, as well as any bugs or other issues people come across (though these have been stress tested quite heavily already)
https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/mf1whw/micro_match_open_beta_released_on_na_eu_kr/
Enjoy, and let me know if you are interested in being one of our testers and at or above 5k MMR.
