Today two Teamliquid staff members will be visiting Blizzard HQ in Anaheim, California for a tour of the facility and some sit down time with the most recent build of Starcraft 2. Joining them will be a range of news sites, news papers and other media, all of whom will feel the Teamliquid Hammer smack down upon them.
The event starts 10am Pacific today and will run through till the late afternoon. Last Romantic and Semioldguy will be updating this news post with any important tidbits via edits or twitter (we are so web 2.0 ).
The day should consist of
- Tour of Blizzard - Play time with the newest multiplayer build - Sit down with Chris Siggity and Dustin Browder
Other Updates Semioldguy: Still waiting to go in, don't know how frequent we will be able to make large updates, but will make updates as we can. I also bring up the Muta stacking to Dustin Browder preobably every time I talk to him. He wants to include in in the game but the programming has troubles with it. I'll check to see how it's coming though.
Kennigit: From what i can gather from other sites they are playing sc2 right now.
Last Romantic They're shutting us up till next min Oo
How much of the game are they willing to redesign based on beta feedback (i.e. universal protoss mana pool, etc.) Things like MAJOR mechanics changes as opposed to a handful of units or stats? To clarify: what, if anything, is unlikely to change at this point?

Ask "Will we be able to change the amount of minerals/gas per trip by a miner in the map editor, changing from the original 5 min (or w/e it is now) to something like 3 or 8 minerals per trip to change gameplay speed? Or is that hardcoded into the programming?"

Talk about scourges, and if theres any chance they may be back in the game (if the phase prism can deploy its psi radius while floating in the air, it may be imbalanced if it hovers a place where GtA can't get it.. along with Nighthawks, maybe scourges would be great to bring back, altho obviously I havent played the game so I am just theorycrafting.)
are beta keys being given away to any progamers in korea? If not, is it because the coaching staff wants their players to only be playing BW and not get distracted?
The latest battle report has a guy they introduce as the "E-sports team member" (Robert Simpson I think). What does that team do? Has blizz said anything yet about what their plans are to make the esports industry better than it currently is?

they said they are building SC2 from ground up as an "e-sport" in mind. Combine that with them giving GOM some funding and it's easy to make your own conclusions.

In the mapmaker Q&A they said that the maps will be all around more flexible than in warcraft III, and in warcraft III you could change harvesting speed and amounts harvested, so it would be reasonable to assume that the answer is a resounding yes.

this is a really stupid question for one "currency" in d2 was/is developed by user preferences and not by blizzard, and much more importantly d3 is way, way too early in its development to even think about this

What I meant by this is will gold have more of an impact on the game IE world of warcraft where there are way more money sinks than potions repairs and gambling.
Anything they can add about storyline now, that wasnt said earlier?
And PLEASE, notice wich specific units models changes when upgrades are done (like ling wings), especially for toss and terran. Ask to Browder how this can affect the mindgames, like: before we could not tell if a zergling has speed until he moves, but now we can see as soon as the wings appear.
In BW a zerg player generally makes far less workers than a protoss or terran player. is that the same or do Zerg players need more drones this time around?
Is there anyway for old mission briefings to come back? (if someone doesn't want this new walk-aroud-ship thing) Was BR #3 played on fastest or on normal game speed? What can you say about controlling units in general? What about graphics(visibility, smoothness)?
If you can rewind, ask them if they plan to keep the feature, and ask them about replay size (if possible ask also if it will be possible to watch replays without having the map).

Really?
It may yet prove it's making the replay too big for "blizzard standard". It's common blizzard policy to make sure replays are as compressed size wise as possible, yet packed with useful things. Shit may yet hit the fan and the feature (rewind) might be discarded due to size issues. Spew your uneducated smirky remarks elsewhere please.
hey semioldguy. Apart from stacking air units you should really talk to them about air units being able to move while firing, which is just as essential a part in muta micro.
Air units in SC2 seem to decelerate before firing, which could be a big problem...

Obviously they haven't encountered these problems as of yet, so your question is still rather silly.
what id suggest for replays if the replay files are too large with rewind, is just have "restart" points, like maybe 4 sections, very first of game, 1/4 thru game, half way thru game, then 3/4 of the game.. That would probably save file size and still be very functional.
Workers carry now 5 minerals instead of 8 minerals per trip because of the improved ai and automining, but 1)do the new macro mechanics not boost the economy over the niveau of sc1?
In the last battlereport the Protoss made good use of the macromechanics and had not much problems to produce units while expanding.
2) Does the lurker replace the baneling when it comes to t3, or do they serve different roles?
3) Will the sc2 ladder work the same way wc3´s ladder did?
4) Assuming macro mechanics were introduced because of automining, can we expect something to compensate mbs and smart casting?

This is one of the things that I'm most worried about, especially since (PURE SPECULATION FROM WATCHING THE BATTLE REPORTS AND OTHER PIECES OF MEDIA) this game seems to be based more on micro than macro.
Then again, David Kim just destroys everyone before the game gets too far so... maybe not, haha.

Macro comes from certainty that you can do it safely, and Starcraft did not become much of a macro game till after like 6 years, so do expect Macro some time, but don't expect it soon.

Each BR was won by David Kim because he had a huge economic advantage later on. He lost most of the battles until the final minutes. We still haven't seen a real even econ mid/late game.

Seems like you could just have the software do this while the replay is playing, then you wouldn't need to save them in the file itself, but in temporary memory, and you wouldn't have to limit yourself to 4 sections, you could hold a bunch of temporary states. In fact, I wouldn't be too surprised if this was similar to what they in fact implemented.

good point man. remember 90% of vZ games on Bnet before 2000 featured a 5 pool- not because it was necessarily a great strat but because it was easy and intuitive. until each unit, unit combos, tech patterns, timings etc are figured out SC2 will be a micro slugfest as all other RTS metagame's begin. Now if two years from now its still ~40 pop armies running around... I dont see SC2 being very memorable.
Do you guys think Blizzard is retarded? They dont add in features (like REWIND WOOHOO) and then go even another step and show it off at a conference only to second guess themselves. They added it in because obviously it works and the file sizes are reasonable, we can have 1mb replays with the ability to rewind, this is the day in age with 1 terabyte harddrives (if need be) and fast internet. So yeah and even still 1mb? so? even 500kb is nothing.
Anyhow, rewind is amazing and I'm gonna be giddy for the next week.

Yeah, exactly. Metagame is gonna evolve pretty fast methinks.
Can you ask about why they've emphazised on so many spellcasters rather than keeping them to a select few like in SC, now going more towards the Wc3-style.
Are the games played at fastest, if not, why? And how does the overall speed and fragility of units look like?

No he can't, because it's not even true - the difference in spell/ability count between SC and SC2 is like.. 1 or 2 units -_-

It could be possible that the press is now in the beta, but they don't want to disclose this until it's ready for the public (opt-ins).

Why would they delay it a week? Did TeamLiquid expose a terribly imbalanced strategy that would just dominate the first week of the beta anyways, setting them back as they fix it?

yea but we could've got the beta today i don't know about you but i'd much rather be playing the beta than reading an article
I like articles. And I don't have a beta key. And I'm not even interested in playing it, I'd rather wait for the finished product. Sure, the delay is annoying, but a beta that crashes all the time or has grave imbalances would suck too.

It's also entirely possible that they were simply going to announce the date for beta (such as July 17?), and have the impatient masses wait regardless. Or, something completely unrelated.
It's only really disappointing if you let yourself succumb to the 'BETA 2DAY' hysteria.

I can definitely see that working. Go spend this week gathering signatures and sending the petition to Blizzard, they'll probably end up buckling and announcing the important news having received it.
I'm sure we'll get more answers soon. But I'm also wondering that, too. Did Blizzard say they were going to announce something big, but weren't ready so you gotta wait a week ... or did they say you guys can't report on what you saw in the game here today. The second one doesn't make much sense, since the public has played it on several occasions; there shouldn't be much new to see. Maybe they replaced the Zerg with Mountain Dew cans or something and are fearing upheaval!
I know you're NDAed but assuming you can still ask questions and tell answers later: what is the zerg queen like in the current build? Particularly, how much are they to buy and, how does the create larva ability work? (#created? #energy or cooldown?)
I'm interested in finding out if a second hatchery could reasonably be replaced with an early queen.
It's like when you really have to piss. The closer you get to the toilet, the more urgent and urgent the need gets. Yeah, it's only another week. Then we'll all be happy.
BUT GOD DAMN I AM ABOUT TO RELIEVE A FLOOD OF YELLOW SUNSHINE.
ok, so they can't say what they learnt there but (i don't know how this NDA was written) maybe they can say what the didn't learnt there, so if there was nothing about beta or blizzard new projects they could say so.
Instead of you guys rejoicing because of the beta coming so soon, you're pissed cause it's not NOW. Well MONDAY is a lot better than a month from now, in my oppinion. Or than ESPORTS math.
Truth be told they let us know about rewind and were kicked out of blizz headquarters everything you hear from now on is them talking at the local bar drowning in mysery how they got fired from the beta before actually having the beta. But that truth would hurt. DAM NDA on rewind (should of read the fine print)

I'm not sure if that would go over well, but I'd love it if they would tell us what they could talk about. Of course, it's probably nothing.
BOOOO, I woke up, made breakfast and turned on my laptop, found this thread and got really happy only to find NDA.... SERIOUSLY BOOO. On the other hand I'm glad to hear there is now a rewind feature on replays, thats going to be so godly. Someone also mentioned spine crawlers had a make over, thank goodness because I always thought the new model sucked and looked weak. Expecting something juicy on monday!
It's a disappointment that we got smacked by an NDA right in the middle of it, but at the very least we know that there will be much more information coming next week.
It would just be so awesome if they announced something ridiculously insignificant, like a minor makeover of the probes :D (Or what was in fact for lunch that day)

[13:40 EDT] Just saw pvp game is fast and looks good. Multiple dt models not a problem. Tvz now w supply depot harass. Cancel recoups 100% now
Wat? lol supply depot harass?
From what I gather when the terran cancels his buildings he gets 100% of his resources back, so in a TvZ the terran can just plop a supply depot wherever he wants, for example - at what the blizzard team refers to as the "natural expansion" or at the top/bottom of their ramp.
I won 2 and lost 2. My teammate was horrible, stupid nooby friend!
I lost first to SC2GG, who later went and beat TL. Then I had to play TL.
My teammate got destroyed, but I was able to kill one of the TLers, but he had an expansion. I later got overwhelmed by the other player because his army was so vast.
So what did you do today?
Oh also, Karune beat one of the TLers 1v1. That was a great game, would be an AMAZING battle report.

More than one person in the same house can go on the original Bnet at the same time.
yeah, but often times there are big lag issues
I have had around 8 people on b.net without lag issues.
I think he's talking about IP4 and NAT issues if your all playing through the same router. Not sure if SC2 is ipv6 or not... But i do have a question; with the nullifier, how effectivly can you contain an army in the open then AoE them...? because armies already seem to fall into tight formation naturally, and it would be super gay if toss could just contain with 6 or so force fields (even in the open) then AoE the army to hell...
as gay as Maelstrom + psi-storm, really.
If you let the dude get so much casters and you can't kill him off, you deserve to lose anyway.
Changing subject, anyone else still click every 20 minute into this thread in hope of new info? I do ;_;
Kind of a disadvantage to zerg though due to having to use a drone to get an extractor. Would have been interesting how it would work though guess they got too many complaints.
What? TL got owned by Blizzard employees? Sounds like the 1v1 would make a good BR Wish you could tell us more, but I guess we will have to wait till Monday.

Doesn't really matter I say. It's all what the map maker decides to do anyways.
No, because they must've adjusted the mining rate accordingly. Two geysers used to be equal to roughy 1.5 of BW's gas mining rate. Now it's propably back to equal to BW.
On June 23 2009 14:58 onmach wrote: No dual gas, eh? That's too bad, as two gas geysers requires twice the macro to set up, semi offsetting auto mining.
I hope you're not serious. It hardly requires any macro.
One of the attendee's(sp?) said that the real announcement was postponed for another press conferense. The only things that they cannot reveal is mostly about the current beta build.
Nothing major, which is unfortunate. But since the NDA is up untill monday. Is there a possibility that the next conferense might be before that?
There was no press conference today, it was rescheduled. So we basically played sc2 all day and hung out with the devs and karune.
Also any information I found out, I am not allowed to say. Hence why I had to delete my twitter posts.
No there was no press event, so we know nothing. The only info we have is certain things they showed us, and changes to the current build. Which we cannot mention the details until monday.
Doesn't seem like they learned anything special besides changes in the current build.
"There is a rumour that over 200 members of press have been invited there. They can’t all fit there at the same time so that sounds a good reason for the NDA. Nobody can publish any information before the last visitor have been there."
It doesn't make sense that it's the latest build that's NDA. Why do they care so much if we see unit changes now? Anyway, I bet it's something about Battle.net 2.0 or the campaign.

I think this is all old info so it doesn't break NDA:
1) Marine shields, researched from barracks tech lab addon, give +15 hp; this makes stim more palatable since even post stim sans medic you have more HP than SC1 marines.
2) Marauders still have 125 HP + slowing attack so they can wall and tank for your marines pretty well.
So does that mean marines/medivac and marauders will be viable for PvT? I mean it sounds like they have alot of HP and that they will be able to dodge storms like hydras, except medivacs will heal them afterwards, Plus stim will make them move so much faster.
How many press staff were in attendance? From which sites/publications did they come from? Main sites I'm curious about are IGN, Gametrailers, 1up, Gamespot etc.
And now for a question you probably can't answer...did the news you heard make you more excited for SC2s release? A simple 'yes/no' would do, perhaps with a 'hell yes!' if it was really really cool news.

I'm not sure if this was answered before.
I think this has been covered in the past Blizzcon and WWI reports, try searching for those (I personally don't remember how many you see - I think you see like 3 rows of units then you have to scroll down, but I could be wrong).

Uh, I'm not sure you are entirely clear on what a non-disclosure agreement is. You can not write one up and assume its legally binding without the agreement of the second party. Think of them as the permission slips you had to get signed whenever you went on field trips in elementary school. Except where permission slips went (more or less), "we aren't responsible for any harm on your child if they do stupid shit", non-disclosures would go something along the lines of, "we'll sue the shit out of you if you talk".
Odds are, Blizzard just got all the attendees to sign the agreement forms they had whipped up before they were allowed to start playing the SC2 build they had available.
So, I've been following SC2 for a long time on this site and throughout development there have been some questionable changes to the game. I think that in the end things will basically work out, but 100% cancel is probably the worst change I've heard of yet. I'm not saying it will be game-breaking and pylon blocks/temporary walls/fake bunkers are fun, but shouldn't these have some cost? If anything, I always thought that there was too large of a difference in forcing an expo to cancel and destroying it once it was up. Of course you still delay it and resources are still tied up for a time with any uses of cancel, but this change seems so unnecessary.
If you all just spend the next few days just playing StarCraft, or whatever, you'll forget all about this thread until Monday and it'll be just like a surprise again!
I'm sure SoG and LR are writing up the perfect news post as is the SC2GG side. We're all trying our best to make it interesting and, of course, we'll be answering questions. Big and Small. Just go take your minds off of it for awhile and come back later.
Chinese site sc2p.com reported that Chris Sigaty that there will be 40,000 beta testers in each region (North America, Europe, Korea, China, etc.), the total number is nearly 200,000. This news item was just recently removed from the site.
Also, I believe that Monday, yesterday and today are the days people were invited to visit Blizzard. Representatives from sc2p.com are there today. Hence, I will jump to conclusions and say major beta news has been divulged at this conference.
Is it possible that Blizzard will withdraw their NDA after today once all the press has visited?

I can add that the biggest french-speaking fansite is going to Blizzard's HQ today or tomorrow too (he did not confirm, but said something like "I'm not there but I can't tell you where I go" :p).
Yeah but then why did Blizzard decide to use a NDA only after the "conference" started ? If they knew they would invite a lot of fansite/press during the week, it should have been clear that they would need a NDA and not wait...
What would be the point of that? It'd be easier just to get everyone to sign at the event, seeing as how everyone's already present. Plus, you don't need to bother yourself with figuring out whether or not everyone present signed it.

They didn't - apparently everyone signed a NDA as they were walking in and no one bothered to read it.... In their defence, they signed one last year too but it was basically just a formality as they immediately reported on it when they left with no issues.

So its about time to break the NDA.
Lol, that is almost the worst reasoning i've ever heard :p "these guys went, then these guys did, then these guys did, and these guys broke their NDA" --> "this means, since we are no longer there we are not subject to their NDA" Orrr... we could try not breaking the NDA, and just go en-mass to other sites and get THEM to break the NDA? Personally not in the mood to get a cease and desist letter all because we couldn't be bothered waiting...
No I'm saying its time for Blizzard to break the NDA. People say Blizzard made the NDA to give members of the media visiting late in the week a fair chance to report what they see. Since now all members of the media have visited, there is no reason to hold the NDA all the way to Monday.

Probably not, although that would be cool. The only ads I've seen for PC games on TV are the Sims, the rest are all Wii games, and the most repeated one has to be Pokemon.
I believe it is against the NDA to say when the NDA expires. So technically no one can confirm the time. But I'd be most happy with 12:01 PST Monday since its as early as possible on Monday, and its late enough in my timezone that I won't stay up but can read as soon as I awake.

Even if this is true, there are plenty of similarly fiddly legal rules that are not consistently observed when it comes to difficult-to-enforce agreements like an NDA. If something more severe happened and Blizzard took someone to court over that, they might hit them up for also revealing the date of the NDA's expiration, but they're not likely to initiate action over it.

There is only one NDA. Many have seen it, but few have signed it.
Legend tells of a time when men took arms and broke the NDA, spilling the secrets of the Gods. But whilst still celebrating their victory, a great cold overtook them. And since that day, none have dared offend the NDA, for it is under the protection of the mighty Blizzard.

"No youll be constantly disappointed that there is no beta information." "I know nothing about beta. Dono why people keep assuming things lol. You all will be disappointed."

When the NDA is lifted in about 13 hours, people who attended Blizzard last week are able to disclose what they saw. So that means we will probably immediately see articles on TL and other sites since they probably already wrote on their experiences. That's all we can expect.
I really hope the NDA ends early Monday morning, so we can finally find out what is going on. Hopefully some well written articles and/or a podcast about it will be up for maximum awesome.
Summary of of what people have guessed will happen on Monday:
-Nothing will happen. for whatever reason allot of news websites got invited for a conference but, once at the conference it was announced that it got cancelled and Blizzard put a NDA on it.
-Blizzard only invited for conference so they could answer questions and then use the NDA so they have the time to gather all to one QA and post it on the Main page before the other websites.
-Blizzard actually announced a beta date but wanted the other websites to wait until Monday so all the other news websites would get the chance to prepare that came the day after.
-Blizzard not only announced a beta date that will be revealed on monday, but they also gave out SCII copies to all the news websites. At the same time they cannot really report anything from their games or Beta before Monday.

well it wouldn't be too random to have it be GMT, and there's other reasons why they would pick different time zones. Although now i'm just waiting for midnight ('cause i'm in the right time zone ^^)
No LAN from their perspective is probably to reduce piracy and stop siblings from playing the same copy together at home, and buying one each. Too bad LAN is awesome. Will Battle.net2 latency be an issue now?
First Person View You know how sometimes if you’re watching an OSL game they will do a fancy animation and then you will be seeing the first person view (what they are seeing on their own screen) of one of the players? Where you can watch their screen flicker rapidly between sections on the map, watch them frantically macroing or deftly microing their units? Well you guessed it. An observer in a Starcraft 2 game will be able to watch any players’ FP View at any time.

What if you want to LAN SCII without internet? or simply the internet is down on said LAN?
I was at the meeting, and they didn't say anything about LAN one way or the other that I heard. Either they have another source of info or it's just a rumor...
Although they did tell us that we were playing a pretty rough version, so maybe they were thinking about something else that just hadn't been included yet.

Or maybe you were on Battle.net2 alpha and didn't know it.

In SC you even had an installation that allowed you to play with specific other copy with the same ID. It did not stop SC from being one of the most successful games. Anyway if there would be no LAN = no progaming (at least vastly limited) = less copies sold.
I can't believe Blizzard embargoed slightly more detailed information about features we already knew about. Instead of getting a Beta date, we find out they removed LAN. This was so not even close to being worth the anticipation. This whole event just makes me a bit less excited, and very disappointed.
Here are the pieces I pulled out of thier summery:
... according to senior vice president of game design, Pardo,.... has also revealed that the development team "don't have any plans to support LAN" (Local Area Networking), and clarified saying "we will not support it." This is an interesting statement, since the easy LAN functionality of the original game is one of the reasons it became so big in the first place. Current communities like iCCup, using StarCraft mods to host games are considered "pirate servers" by Blizzard, and Pardo wants to see those services shut down.
Sad sad day, and here I was hoping for a date for the beta
