On December 25 2016 06:27 Half the Sky wrote: A very Happy Christmas to everyone on TL Mafia. <3 It's time to bust out the ![]() Christmas is conspicuously the only time of year when the word “merry” receives heavy use. The greeting “Merry Christmas” dates back to at least 1565. Queen Elizabeth II wishes British subjects a “Happy Christmas” in her annual Christmas broadcasts, and the phrase enjoys a broad general currency the U.K. What accounts for the difference? Queen Elizabeth, a woman of serious low-church piety, is said to prefer “happy” to “merry” because she dislikes “merry’s” connotation of boisterousness, even slight intoxication. This moral suspicion of “Merry Christmas” dates back to the Methodist churchmen of the Victorian era who sought to promote sobriety among the English working class. Merrymaking of the ancient, alcoholic sort was frowned on year-round, perhaps never more so than during the celebration of the Savior’s birth. To certain ears, then, “Happy Christmas” conveys a sober, well-earned enjoyment, the satisfaction resulting from hard work and virtuous living. “Merry Christmas” stirs in us an impulse more primitive and unrestrained "Happy" Christmas sounds so weird so I google'd the origins between Happy vs Merry. The context of the post is pretty amusing given the explanation. Anyways, Merry Christmas all! ![]()

So I go in they start my IV using my permanent IV site in my chest. Then I meet people. Doctors that were going to be in the room at one point or another. First the anesthesiologist who was going to put me to sleep and keep me under while monitoring everything. Second was another anesthesiologist this ones job was to make me as comfortable as possible after the surgery. So they go we are going to give you a epidural now but instead of just a injection like they give women when they are having a baby there were going to leave in my back, it would deliver numbing meds and some pain meds into my spine. So they are like is that ok and I go I have had some bad experiences with nerve blocks in the past when giving injections through my back. But the things I would get took like 45 minutes to find the correct spot and was very far into my back. This would be just into my spine and take like 5 minutes. But they were cool and gave me some Versed. Which is shit that makes you not give a shit about anything and relax you. So they did that. My surgery was scheduled for 1pm and I had to be there at 1030 am. They put the epidural in around 1130ish. Then gave me some pain meds because I was hurting and my meds from the morning were already starting to wear off because I took them earlier than normal because I dont sleep before surgeries or procedures ever. Then they came in and told me the person in the OR before me was having some problems and would take longer. I didnt actually get into the surgery room until 4pm 3 hours after I was scheduled to go in. So they told me the first thing they will do when I go under would be to start a arterial IV in my wrist that would be for taking blood out for testing and doing other monitoring. Then they would give a jugular IV into my neck. This is where they would give me most of my medicine. My normal IV was to be more like a back up and would be the iv running fluids. They roll me into the room and pick me up to transfer me to the OR table. I was surprised they didnt ask me to just get up and move as I am a huge dude. Then I get hooked up to all the monitors and then they put my arms out to the sides and I am laying flat on my back both arms out to my sides. They then tell me they are going to give me some relaxing meds. I go am I going out now and they go no not yet just relax and pain meds so I am comfortable because normally lying straight on my back is very painful for me. About 5 minutes after that they said ok "Onegu we are going to give you the meds to make you go out now" Ok. And I was out. I woke up screaming in the SICU. Surgical Intensive Care Unit. My mom was there. My son couldnt come into the ICU and that was fine. That first night and next days were hell. They figured out they did the conversion of my medicine that I normally take for pain as a pill to make it into a IV medicine were wrong after a few days. I was getting half of what I should have been at that point. For some reason the pain doctor thought that it was a .5 to 1 conversion when it is supposed to be a 1 to 1. I mean seriously get your shit together. And I really dont like how they have things set up. The only people who could give or change my pain medicine was the pain group. My surgeron came in on the third day and looked at me and goes I am sorry I talked to pain doctors and they wont give you any more extra. I heard the pain doctor come in the second day with some students and goes "with opioid tolerant patients here you have to find other ways to help pain and not just up the amount of narcotic medicine you give. So we are giving him Tylenol and rotating it with other non opioid/narcotic medicine. They were giving me fucking Tylenol for surgical pain. I have a 18 inch cut across my stomach and I am getting Tylenol... So now about the actual procedure. My doctor cut my open and I had much scar tissue because of previous surgeries in the area and it took him longer than he thought to get to the area. Then the most important part was to remove the cyst. It can become infected or even cancerous. But when they got to it. It had turrned the fat tissue around it into dead tissue. It was already surrounded by much more dead tissue then they thought. And all dead tissue had to be removed. Then they didnt want to just drain the cyst into my intestines but actually remove it. But as they were removing the dead tissue around it it burst. Well maybe not burst but it broke open. The doctor told my family it was like cottage cheese and just started to go everywhere. So they had to suction it all out. Also since they had to remove more tissue than they thought they had to make a bigger incision. It went from 15 inches that they thought they would use to over 20 inches. This caused me to bleed much more than normal. And I needed 1 blood transfusion. To just take out the cyst which they though would only take 1 hour to 1 and a half hours took over 4 hours. And since they gave me a blood transfusion already they decided that they were just going to close me up. They then needed to also put in a drainage device into my stomach also to drain any fluid that they missed from the cyst. They closed me up used 42 staples to close the incision. The surgery was 5 hours long and they only got 1/3 of the things they wanted to do. So I still have my shitty pancreas that will still cause me pain and may/will make more cysts. Most cysts ie 95% of them will be reabsorbed into body and not cause problems unlike the one they just removed. I spent 2.5 days in the SICU and 9 days total in the hospital. On January 2 I will have the staples removed and see what the plan is. I thing they just want me to stay with pain management and resign myself to living in pain everyday. They guessed removing half my pancreas would reduce my pain by 80-90% and let me live a much more normal life. But now it will be business as normal. And with even more scar tissue from this surgery I doubt they will want to open me up to remove most of my pancreas for just pain relief. Overall it was a not that great experience. Much worse then I thought it would be due to not managing my pain correctly to not completing what they wanted done. We will see what they will say a week from monday. Meanwhile the pain at home is bad as I have my normal pain to live with plus the incision pain. It makes me really not want to be out of bed. I am not allowed to pick up my disabled son. I cannot pick up 5 pounds for 2 weeks and then 15 pounds for 4 week after that. So for 2 months I cant pick him him and he calls for me every day and doesnt understand why daddy cant pick him up. I can hold him in my lap but he wants me to walk over to him and get him not let someone pick him up and give him to me. And that is hard also. Anyway being home is better than in the hospital and hopefully will do better and better.
