Real men use Arabian Nights and the like.

So you say we do this in an IRC MTG mafia game or something? We could use the same "drafting system" done in PYP games or something. You show us all the cards, and we give a list of which one we want 1st, then which one 2nd, etc. Then using the PYP drafting system, you choose which player gets which card.
Thus we don't need players being online in IRC at the same time or stuff like that We could do it in a QT, that way we won't spam a thread on the TL Mafia board constantly. I'll put all the cards with links up in one QT (or on the main thread) and decide an order in which players pick. Then you just post in the QT which card you want to have. Furthermore, I suggest that each player picks their favourite set and I'll pick 2 booster packs from it to use in the draft. 30 cards should be fine since we're going for 40 card decks where you get free basic lands.
Traditionally, each player opens 3 packs in drafts since the general feeling is with 2 packs per player the decks are shitty.
*shrug*

Yeah, sn0, but that's 50% as much work ![](/mirror/smilies/puh2.gif)
Also, it might be cool to instead of sending alignments at the start or at the end, sending them when about half the cards have been picked.

End of first pack? Yeah, that sounds good. I was planning on having both boosters open at the same time though so players have more variety in choosing.

Aren't those the formats so devoid of playables you'd be delighted if your deck had multiple 2/2s for 4?

Ah, so everybody can see what everybody else is getting. Usually you have to infer that, don't you? Also, I don't think it'd be too obvious. Sure, picking up that Wrath of God might mean you're scum, but Wrath of God is also just a plainly powerful card in limited format (same as we put Larry's Disk in this constructed deck, because we *might* be forced to deal with a table full of enchants/artifacts and/or creatures that we had no other way of dealing with except to wipe it all out and start again, regardless of alignment. I do agree that the card is better for scum than for town).
Of course, if you first pick Soul Siphon then we know what's up

I guess it's possible WotC printed something even worse since I stopped playing, but they seemed to have a decent balance by the time I quit. We had some interesting discussions about game balance in our Hydra chat where we laughed about how OP some cards in the earlier sets were, but then cards in later sets got more powerful, while there was a period where everything was shit.
Like... in the beginning Juzam Djinn was one of the craziest OP creatures in the game. Ernham Djinn was playable and the keystone of constructed decks that won tournaments. They removed Lightning Bolt from 5E because it was deemed too powerful. Now, Juzam Djinn is a decent creature, but nothing OP about it. Erhnam Djinn would never be used in constructed and there are about 17 different clones of Lightning Bolt, some even more powerful than it. On the other hand, Library of Alexandria, Strip Mine and Black Vise would never be printed now, because WotC's R&D department has gotten somewhat of a clue about what works and what doesn't (although they still let shit slip through every now and then).

I'd totally play a draft mtg mafia but I feel the balance would be all sorts of fucked.

Bolt is almost universally recognized as a bit too good (although wizards is willing to print it when red looks crappy overall). No other burn spell really comes close, although there are definitely almost-infinite similar options.

The thing is, this game is so heavily themed that the balance is already totally whack; look at how scum could have won day four even though both were caught day one. With so many 'power roles' in town the balance depends highly on town making good reads, if you have seven viggis shooting into each other town is in a terrible place.
This would be a very interesting PYP/PTP game since we would all try to balance it for ourselves.
Crossfire, the hell were you planning to do with that deck had you rolled town?

Mulligan to zero, probably

What I planned to do with my sliver deck the first game. Kill everyone, let Artanis sort em out.

Yeah, I can see this game turning into a shitfest really quick if it wasn't so easy to establish town reads on some of the stronger decks. It kind of forced everyone to treat this more like a traditional game and less like a game of mtg. The mafia monster kind of contributed to that as well. Seems like this is really hard for the mafia unless they play a win-con like AS did and it all falls into place. Was fun though, thanks for hosting Artanis

Crossfire, the hell were you planning to do with that deck had you rolled town? Uh, there were lightning bolts and lightning helixes in my deck as well, but I never drew them. There were a lot of creatures in the deck I could have used but didn't really draw.

Lol GG guys, hehe my reads are getting better :D

Ah those were the days I used to play... kjeldoran outpost and thawing glaciers would be pretty sweet in a lot of decks though.
