IDK, like i said, 1 ward (or 1 summoner / ult at 50 minutes) in Game 1 away from dominantly 3-0ing WE. Was a series of inches.

Unless TSM placing first in group D is a crazy expectation

I think this year is different because the fans didn't have crazy expectations Unless TSM placing first in group D is a crazy expectation I don't think it's crazy. On paper they were supposed to be the favorite of the group. Then again they seem to under perform when it comes to worlds a lot.

Proud of sneaky and smoothie. Impact stepped up. Jensen did well 4 of 5 games but goddamn did Contractz show his lack of experience.

I mean I'd still rank misfits performance the best outside of Korea, for the quarter finals anyway. Other than that it would be pretty hard to say NA/EU > CN. Crazy to think we were, say four, plays away from a MSF/FNC and SSG/C9 semis. The only team in the whole quarter finals that stood no chance was LZ of all teams. Impressive showing from (mostly) every team in the quarters, looking forward to semis.

I just want the better team to win and EU/NA failed to prove that. To me, the reason why these East vs. West matches were so interesting to watch was because it wasn't just the Western teams rolling over and getting stomped by the Eastern teams like they have in the past (in this example, Western teams are NA/EU, Eastern teams are CN/KR). Misfits - a team that pulled an eerily similar run to C9 back in 2013 - was a team of raw talent being thrust into the fires of the World stage and against the battering ram that is SKT and pushed the World champions to their limit. Was part of that due to SKT looking past Misfits? Possibly. But the moment Misfits took a game off SKT, you know that they started to take the match seriously. And getting a, "Faker's fucking pissed" camera reaction shows just how irked he was that this wasn't like prior Worlds where he could play with just his mouse and still run circles around the Western teams. Fnatic fought toe-to-toe versus RNG, and even if the final scoreline doesn't seem to represent it, every game went at least 40 minutes, which shows that there was some resiliency in this squad. Finally, C9 brought out some new things in their match versus WE and were just a couple of plays away from making it to semis, but (in my eyes) a combination of nerves and execution errors cost them a couple games (mainly game 1,) and in game 5 it was just them running out of steam while WE was used to these grueling 3-4 hours of constant playtime because of their play in the LPL. Other than TSM collapsing in the second week (which at this point we shouldn't even be surprised by), the Western teams in the quarterfinals (in my eyes) showed that the "gap" between East and West is as narrow as its ever been. It's still there, don't get me wrong, but it's not like an entire ocean's worth of water now. Now, it's probably more like a lake; still sizeable, but one that can be crossed with proper planning and the right tools. And - most importantly - you can see the shore (a Worlds championship) on the horizon.

I think he just means that most people in the West cheer for their culture group once it becomes clear that the only way to make it through is to beat a bunch of invincible Koreans (and this year the CN teams as well), aka the East. And the reason we do that is because we're taught there is a distinction between the two our whole lives, people in NA view CN as a much more foreign nation than say the UK. I mean I'd still rank misfits performance the best outside of Korea, for the quarter finals anyway. Other than that it would be pretty hard to say NA/EU > CN. Agreed, Misfits played out of their minds. Wonder how they'll perform in LCS next year, hopefully they've learned a lot in their international experience.

Actually I hope all of the quarter finals teams stick together. I think as the esport matures having a stable roster has become so much more important. Samsung didn't make back to back semis for nothing. Sure teams with obvious holes should fix those, but I don't think that any of the round of 8 teams have any members that I'd clarify as "holding them back"
