Auto attack animations will always finish even if the target leaves range. The only way to get an auto attack animation to cancel is to lose vision (like by walking into a bush). An easy way to test this is to auto attack by clicking on an enemy who is just slightly slower than you and out of range while they're running away. If you don't touch your keys you will auto attack and follow them. Your auto attack will execute the pixel you're in range and will not cancel as they immediately move out of your auto attack range. There may be a break range but i have most definitely had people flash out of my ranged auto attacks and the animation still complete (so it spawns a projectile after they flashed which tracks them all the way).
Almost always what you're seeing is that the player accidentally cancels the animation themselves because they're clicking too much.

Nope, it you get out of range while he starts it, he won't complete it. It depends when he is in the animation, but I clearly remember a Fizz walking away like this twice under 50 HP during a game (and other times where it happened, but it wasn't as specific). It was the Staggering Blow's animation that did it.
I'm not talking about something I "see", but something I experience (I mean back in s3 when I played a fuckton of him there weren't many Naut players anyway; I think I've seen 2 in the last 3-4 months and I know SV plays him, but that's about all I see him when I don't pick him).

Go test it. You're almost assuredly clicking between when he moves out and when the animation cancels. Even another attack move or attack command will cancel the auto attack.

Naturally naut has a melee animation. You guys are both right. Gou is right for ranged attacks, but melee ones can be cancelled this way.

from what i remember it was when it became a trinket vice an item, although going through the patch note history for it it says its always been 1 and 1 (which i'm pretty sure is wrong)

part good rule book writing is including clauses that will allow you to punish people for violations that have not yet been thought of. ESLone got into a big dispute with a c9 dota player (EE-sama) over a rule about bathroom breaks, ESL had no real intention of hard enforcement on the rule but if a team had abused it for "strategic bathroom breaks" esl would be covered to tell them they could not go.
