So, I hit level 30 last night. I am not going to be doing ranked yet, but I was curious how the drafting system works for solo queue. Do you just ban who you want to ban and pick your own champion and screw everybody else? Or is there at least some communication beforehand?

Every game is different though. Communication is important so if you really want to win, try to communicate so at least you'll know who to mute and make your game more enjoyable.
You can ban who you want. No one can stop you, but half the time if you lose, someone will say something along the lines of "learn to ban".

Bans are 100% irrelevent. Generally just ban champs that piss you off (like Kassadin or Blitz) and whatever your team mates recommend so as to avoid needless rage. Don't ever ask your team who you should ban as suddenly everyone will care and start fights.
For picks you kinda just call which role you want, something like "prefer top" or "main mid/jungle". Remember if everyone is in their main roles your win rate goes up so it does pay to communicate a bit.
Lastly don't put ranked on a pedestal either. It's not a step up from blind pick or pre-30 or anything, it's just the same LoL as everywhere else so don't feel an obligation to practice every role or own a variety of runes/champs before going in.

It's generally better to improve outside of ranked, to reduce clamping. But with enough games played you'd obviously overcome clamping. The more ranked you play the more games it takes to rank up.

Ok so as you all know by now, vision wards have 5 hp and INFINITE DURATION I will say that again INFINITE DURATION
Every single member of the team should buy a vision ward as early as possible and place it either: -Easy spot to defend, like in the middle of your own jungle -Not natural to check, like the little brush between towers in top and bot lane, the single little brush on both sides of midlane kinda counts too.
Even if it is to ward your own jungle, each member investing 100g to have full vision over their own jungle for an extended duration is completely worth it.
In low division, you can even get away by vision warding the little brushes near mid lane and have sight coverage for 20 minutes if no1 walks into it.
tl;dr, it is an extremely low opportunity cost for potential huge rewards, do it, do it now! Every single member of the team should have a pink placed somewhere on the map at all times.
(my favorite is between enemy towers, sure it is awkward as hell to get one there but no1 checks that brush like ever, and it gives a lot of info, very recommended vs stuff like nocturne

Ahhaha my patience not buying a singed skin has rewarded me. Snowy choo-choo singed is the greatest thing ever.

And I kinda put ranked on a pedestal just because I have reasonably high expectations of myself. I also have a hard time judging my personal ability from the games I have played so far. For example, my first level 30 game just finished and I thought I did well... then at the end I am told I made the enemy teams Lee a god even though I went 3-2 vs him and the next time I looked at the leaderboard he was 13-3. We won, but it is frustrating hearing that and competing with other peoples ego.

Getting to 30 is more than enough time if you don't use boosts... It's not like ranked is gold and higher, there's Bronze leagues as well. You have hundreds of games, easily enough.

The Snowdown Lulu skin has a flying fucking poro.
If it turned the enemy into a poro instead of a squirrel, I would be so done.

It's plenty of time. There are people that have played over 2k ranked games and are still in bronze. The best way to improve at ranked is by playing ranked.

Those people don't care either.
I'd say play ranked though. Normals are people fucking around a lot of the time. The matchmaking is not accurate because it's based on normal elo so games are often lopsided.

EDIT: I am probably going to wait until I finish 1 full set of runes before I go into ranked though.

Elo is what is used for placing you in matches. It's in all types of game modes. You get Elo the moment you play one game, then from there it adjusts according to whatever algorithm they have going.
