Yea LoL (or video games) are never going be as mainstream as the NFL.
Kind of what they said when American Football was being played as an intercollegiate game and everyone just said it was just a mere copy of Rugby.
Right.

Cept one happened and the other never will. Besides that your analogy is spot on.

Its an unfair comparison to compare any one game to a sport. Lol, realistically, would be lucky to sustain its competitive scene on a high level for another 5 years. The two best comps would be WoW and Brood War (for different reasons).
WoW is quickly approaching its 10th anniversary (Nov. 2004 release), its still has nearly 8 million subs (which spikes when expansions are released), so that is still chugging along. However, competitive raiding at a high level only lasted for 2 expansion cycles, or about 3 years (and that wasn't spectator friendly).
Brood War had probably the longest (but small, relatively) excellent competitive stretch for a comparable game and probably was a very popular Esport to watch in Korea for 6-7 years.
So even if LoL like doubled its American viewers for the duration of its run at the top, it would still be unlikely to break even 8 million domestic viewers for the biggest events, just because it winds down too quickly.

Diablo 3 did a lot of damage to their reputation as well.

I'll probably try it at least, if it's f2p. Will also probably end up buying LotV for SC2 if only for SC loyalty reasons. I don't really expect much greatness out of Blizzard games nowadays tho :[

You know how to make a game a sport?
Dont freaking change the rules/gameplay every month.
And chess is allready a sport, so you cant say no game will ever become a stable sport.
|
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure LoL is more popular than rugby or chess ever was.

I doubt there's a video game that will last as long with the same rules as chess has. If chess was changed every couple years I doubt it'd be a sport today.

Just watched Saint's stream, he said it's probably going to be now revised to just other MOBA games.

Rugby is significantly larger, but I can't speak for chess.

LoL is bigger in America than Soccer and Hockey now, I heard.

Chess doesn't really have the changes that LOL does. Also, honestly, its not a spectator sport, nor is it a sport with high participation. Its like combining today's WOW's views with today's Brood War playerbase. Its not that successful, just people use it as a measure of intellectual prowess (erroneously I might add), and love the Watson/Deep Blue things.
But yes, big changes in LOL (like S4) discredit the game as a sport. So does the fact that there has been no repeat World Champion, or C9's resurgence. But mostly it is just that to generate a real fanbase for a sport, which has to include people who don't play competitively or even on an amateur level, you need to last for a generation, and no single videogame has managed to do that. It is also not likely to happen because A) Changing technology will leave games outdated, B) One entity has IP rights over a game for essentially a century, and most healthy leagues have sprouted out of competition (NFL/AFL, NBA/ABA, etc) intrasport, and C) That entity with IP rights is likely to try to push consumers to new products because they will inevitably be more lucrative.

The transition from a community oriented game dev to a more traditional soulless corporation is bound to crush a few eggs. The question is if the short-term gains are worth the costs of fan investment and community goodwill. I'd say no, but I can see why Riot's business side would do it anyway. I don't however, see why any fan (i.e. us) would defend a move that essentially raises barriers between ourselves and the pros. No stream viewer or LCS watcher is going to benefit from the new rules certainly. I think it's a pretty classic case of the "we need to grow grow grow grow" mentality that drives most businesses, and ignores the alternative that Riot could recognize that they have something pretty awesome and orient their actions towards making it awesomer, while keeping the awesome it already had. Like, recognize how/why they got popular in the first place and do more of that instead.
