Does anyone remember when the curse pros were playing and promoting infinite crisis? I even remember Elementz casting it.
I think Riot wants to prevent that from happening in the future.

I'm not even arguing whether it's right or not, I'm just saying they're doing what any company does in that position and I don't consider it newsworthy.

People really need to stop for a little bit and just extend Riot the benefit of the doubt. OK, why is this in the contract? Why these titles? Why just LCS people? Why only while streaming?
People say: "Riot is trying to control the esports scene and 'kill' other games". How does that logically follow from the information we've been given here? How does that explain the ban on pornography or tobacco? Is Riot trying to kill porn and cigarettes? Is this a social justice stance also?
We may be able to draw parallels to the long-running struggle between streamers/content producers and the music industry. Where is the line between someone listening to their own music in a non-profit for-fun video and someone "scoring" their work with work they did not license? Even if it is unpopular, there is a very real legal question at the heart of the conflict.
I think people are far too quick to just jump on the hype of a piece of paper read out of context. It's way too dangerous to jump directly to "Riot trying to kill streamers individuality" or "Riot trying to kill the industry". LCS players may be considered Riot employees and therefore there may be legal complexities involved with Riot employees seemingly advertising other products alongside League of Legends. There could be royalties issues or perception issues or fairness issues or other issues related to seeming Riot employees attaching certain things close to the existing League of Legends brand.
We may not get more information from Riot on these contracts, but I really wish people would just take a brief moment while sharpening their pitchforks to think about what Riot would gain by trying to manipulate streams in the way that they are trying to claim they are. I don't think the upside is nearly as high for Riot as the downside. There must be another concern (even if this is a hamfisted mitigation of that concern; it is still an honest mitigation) that is driving this portion of the contract. I don't think anyone said Riot's intentions are malicious. Just the actions are retarded. It's just like how we complain about how stupid some (a lot) of Riot's balancing changes are. Riot has done enough of these "retarded" moves that makes it hard to believe it's not malicious. maybe in the future Also it's kind of hard to make a players union for LoL since Riot are the only people actually doing anything with it(They kind of made sure of that). A general "esports player union" i think makes a lot of sense though. Think Koreans tried this but not sure if it collapsed
there is one league which you can play in and support yourself as a League player NA and EU -- LCS
- RIOT gives them salary to pay living expenses and get to the venue to play in LCS
- If you win LCS you dont need the salary
- you cant play LCS without it.
So the question really is:
Does RIOT pay LCS players a salary to play in LCS or to promote and play League of Legends as a sole video game sponsorship?
As far as I understood, they pay them to play in LCS not to stream League. If they paid them XX$ to stream league this makes sense. If they pay them XX$ to play in the LCS then it does not make sense.
That is the whole issue. My understanding is they get paid to play in LCS and their streams are personal. They dont get paid to Stream league of legends by RIOT [i]while[i/] being in LCS.

That not the issue though because RIOT doesnt own Curse. RIOT pays them to play LCS no?

I saw a Rioter at the local arcade playing DDR.
Should've reported his ass.

For me, it's more so how much Riot is paying the players. If they were playing the players like 100k a year, I wouldn't have an issue with them manipulating what a player can or can not stream. But they're not paid nearly enough to justify Riot's hold over what a player can stream on their free time.

I think Riot wants to prevent that from happening in the future. So long as they don't falsely state that they're playing LoL when they're actually playing IC, that's actually still technically ok.

So it would make sense that Riot wouldn't want their Team promoting a MOBA while they are paying Curse a sum of money.

Or maybe they want Diamondprox to stop cheating in Hearthstone tournaments and this is the crazy indirect Riot solution to it.

Aren't they the only company in this industry that is salarying players to the degree that they are? Wouldn't it therefore be logical that there are elements of that arrangement that are unique to the company doing it?

Yes, but that doesn't mean that the specific provisions are going to be agreeable or acceptable to everyone.
It also still doesn't mean that it's "not newsworthy" or "not worth discussing" like several apologists in this thread keep making it out to be.

They're also the only company that puts pro players on contracts, and gives them huge amounts of publicity/salary. Come on man, use your head.
You're sponsored by Subway? Don't eat shit from McDonalds in public, do it in your own privacy or something. Sponsored by Nike? Don't wear shit from Reebok or whatever. This isn't crazy or some bullshit move by Riot to control eSports and become the Fourth Reich, they're making sure that LCS players have guidelines, and one of those is to not give other companies and games more exposure while drawing in a mostly League of Legends player audience.

maybe in the future Nah, I doubt players give enough of a shit about something like a players union, most professional video gamers are probably more interested in the money/fame/game to have time to unionize. I mean they probably spend like 10+ hours playing games, and considering that most pro gamers are just out of high school or dropped out of college, I wouldn't expect that they'd be super hyped to organize something serious like a player's union with stuff like paperwork involved.
Although, I admit a player's union would be very powerful, imagine the backlash to Riot if hypothetically, TSM were to retaliate against the Hearthstone ban.
