If you dont do any of those things, you're playing fuckin' carebear mode anyway On a related note, my heavily modded, extremely difficult FO3 playthrough is extremely open-world-ly at all times (unless i find a big deathclaw or a yao guai, then i run like little bitch in big russia.). I love FO:NV, but its small map and heavily "routed" world is extremely limiting in its (long) opening stages imo. Played hardcore (or whatever it is called) and did not do that route. I just went straight to NV.

I mean, its open world..why pigeon hole like that lol. Maybe im jaded from the hard-mode mods i always put on the games, but FO3 is alot more open world even with them and i recently played both pre-modding for a few hours. You know what, i'll boot it up tomorrow and see what i can do with no-mods very hard, see if i can break the game a piece. I'll label myself wrong if i can go north from the first town and survive. Do love the game though and wish my save files would stop fucking breaking lol. Both games dont feel as alive or enjoyable to me without at least AWOP+MMM mods though, i run light moddings as it is, only a couple extra on top of these but they add so much to the game. Back on topic: Dorans shield is really good, y no buy moar?

Maybe im jaded from the hard-mode mods i always put on the games, but FO3 is alot more open world even with them and i recently played both pre-modding for a few hours. That's actually the thing though. The only reason people have the expectation of an "open world" (and I say that in quotes because the Bethesda idea of "open world" is a total farce compared to the Interplay originals) is because it uses Fallout 3 as the baseline. From the writers/designers who did PS:T and the dev team that did KotOR 2/NWN2, you should expect a somewhat more closed experience. You're judging NV for what you want/expect it to be, not what it is.

Obsidian never developed an open world RPG in KotOR 2 or NWN2, and the selling point of their design team are the guys that worked on PS:T. There's no reason to expect NV to be one.

When you talk to EVERY NPC in the game, not because you HAVE to to figure out the story, but because you WANT to just to read the amazing dialogue, THAT game wins, every time.

Dragon Quest gets no love on American shores. DQ8 was such an awesome game, yet the advertising campaign and box art suggested that they were selling the FF12 demo which incidentally included DQ8.

They're the equivalent of those huge fantasy novels that are aimed at people who are at the novice level of understanding storytelling, like wheel of time. It's like you're taking Adam west's batman, stripping it of it's sense of irony and presenting it as the epic tale of batman vs the riddler. That's how bad they are. Wheel of Time, despite being about 5 books too long, was actually a very enjoyable read for me. Jordan definitely got caught up in his own imagination, and it's really a good thing he couldn't finish the story his way, else we'd be waiting for book 20. But as a whole, the story is solid enough, and I didn't come out of it feeling let down (Game of Thrones) or that I had just wasted my time on a large book aimed at children (Looking at you, Sword of Truth). I look at FF games in the same light. No, they aren't full of Pulitzer quality writing, or deep, groundbreaking narrative. But, they ARE good stories (starting with 4 and moving along) that entertain, don't get too caught up in themselves, and for the most part, make you feel a sense of attachment to the characters you control on your journey. Edit: needless shot taken.
