She's a fun AP mid who can bring a variety of tools to teamfights, has excellent waveclear, and has really tight animations.
I think you're really getting too hung up on "This ability feels like X!". It was always a leash that slowed (much like LeBlanc's), and the root is much better from a utility perspective, especially considering she now has a spammable slow. If we complain about ability that feels like another, there would be no one happy because we'd only have like 10 "original" champions on the game.
She still has a support/utility role. Late game, you have damage yes, but your main role is locking down a diver with W, slowing and zoning with Q, and shielding targets with E. She still feels more fresh than other champions that came out recently.

I mean, they straight out said Ultimate is a reimagining with upgrades and completely new animations/voice overs - like Pulsefire. Is giving Anivia a dark skin and some metal really that different?

Not really hung up on that fact that her leash is Leblanc's leash. It's inevitable that some skills will overlap. I knew this reasoning would come up to excuse what I feel is a pretty poor execution for a remake from Riot. It's pretty much the idea that, in my opinion, her current form feels nothing like her old form. As I said, nothing is wrong with the damage, but her feel is destroyed compared to her old version. I'm not entirely sure why someone would pick her as support in her current form at all. It's just very very hard to justify. I know why someone would pick her as an AP mid though. Of course, I could be wrong, but I cannot think this Karma was designed for both support and AP solo lane in mind. To me, it feels like Riot definitely abandoned the support prospect to cater to the Karma solo lane players.
I'd also like to add that if someone does pick Karma as a solo lane AP role, I do not think that they will be satisfied with how her "ult" is used/feels now due to this change in Riot mindset. Other mids have a much more satisfying factor with their ults.

Have you seen the skin? It's got brand new voice overs, new spell animations, and is awesome from a lore POV as well.

Ok I misread and forgot about the new naming system they thought up. Blackfrost Anivia is probably going to be a Legendary skin, not an ultimate.

Oh snap, yeah I was saying Anivia would be the next legendary. No idea about the next ultimate.

The only problem with ultimate skins is that they are so awesome that everyone and their mother buys them (at least it was this way with Ezreal).

Don't think RIOT has any problem with that :D

Personally I think it would have been more interesting for Karma's tether to be made ally-only and for them to expand on the supportive aspects of the skill, but instead they went the other way round (make it enemy only and focus on the offensive aspect).

To me, it feels like Riot definitely abandoned the support prospect to cater to the Karma solo lane players. Oh. In that case, I can understand where you're coming from. I agree that Support Karma feels almost non-existent in her current state, but let's be honest, was she before?
In the long run, I honestly feel that AP/Support hybrids are hard to make work. A nice balance was struck with Morg, and somewhat with Lux and Zyra, but then it really boils down to "Here's some kits with high CC that don't need farm, but if you get farm they can also do damage". Adding heals into the mix (especially those scaling with AP) gets problematic and imbalanced one way or another (see: Soraka Mid, though that was also due a lot to the free manapool).
I mean, in my eyes Lux/Morg/Zyra(/somewhat Janna) already feel pretty similar, and adding another "ranged AP Support caster" with a redesigned Karma would just be overkill and a bit boring. Maybe it's just me :\
