I want to hear a counter-argument worded Christopher Hitchens style even though I hate him.
Just tell him to play potion master Morde. OP yo.,
If he wants to build FoN and won't budge you can convince him to build Health Bead + 6 Pots. I mean if you're going to get HP/5 get something more useful than FoN first. With Runes and Masteries you can get 9% spell vamp and I know some people delay more til later. Honestly it just sounds like he's building the really, really old Tank Morde Funfire build.

Guide to playing with your friends in LoL.
#1: Be nice to them, they are probably still learning or not as good as you at this game. Being mean won't help anything. #2: If they build something that's bad kindly suggest something else like, "Yo why don't you try building item X? It's pretty good." #3: They will either take your advice and like it or they will ignore it and say something like, "I do this build because of Y." Or, "I like playing this champion this way!" #4: Upon realizing that they are incapable of seeing why that item is wrong you can explain it further. At which point they may finally accept your reasoning and realize they're being dumb. If they don't there's really no point in arguing with them. Either accept that they're going to build dumb or don't play with them anymore.
I'm not gonna help you convince a friend who doesn't wanna get better at this game. If he wants to build dumb just let him and carry him like a boss.

He has 500 wins...god knows how many losses. He also enjoys comparing himself to pros despite not knowing any of their names and likes to blame others...thanks for the advice anyway.
And speaking of friends who like to blame others even though they are doing bad, should you criticize them? I have a friend mid who is usually pretty good, but sometimes, he will blame people around him when it is crystal clear it is his own fault. In response, I tell them that he is being unfair and scapegoating others. Should I risk the strength of a friendship defending a stranger on the internet who I will never see again?

Oh, he is very good. He use to be humble but because he does so well often playing carries he turned a bit...yeah. He has played about 30 ranked games and has a 60 percent win rate, but it all went to his head and his ego just became incredibly big sometimes thinking the rules do not apply to him and even to the point that he will sometimes leave a game just over a dispute between the two of us.
But despite those flaws, he has much more positive traits about him. He has been my best friend since middle school and he is a very nice guy in real life and I would always want to play with him over any other person.

he should just play until he plateaus ranked tell him that xD. Also, people in games are not always the same when it comes to these games. I'm a complete douchebag to my friends on this game and I have no idea why they want to play with me still but otherwise, I'm super quiet. lol.

In-game: "just don't bother arguing with these guys, they aren't going to change their view on LoL over the course of a 40-minute game" of course, this applies to your friend as well, which is why... After game: "you know, one thing you coulda done back there was..."
It makes sense for more outspoken people to rage during a game -- adrenaline/energy level is higher, games reward snap judgments, etc etc. If he's still angry after the game though, you probably gotta evaluate whether it's worth playing with this person.

You guys are like 2 weeks behind!
AP Rengar needs to be nerfed. It's absolutely broken. According to a Q&A session during PAX, classik, Rengar's designer, did not expect the viability of AP Rengar (he basically didn't give much thought about Rengar's ratio on W and just randomly threw a number on it). It's really awkward for a champion of this kind of visual design to be a mage, and I am sure Riot is not happy about it.

He reminds me of sion. Lumberjack that blows people up with spells instead of his axe.
I'm interested if this has happened to anyone else. So you start on LoL, some friends get you onto it you play with them a fair bit. There's one or two guys who are pretty respected who know their shit, they seem to be the go to dude for advice/directions/calls. Then as time goes on and you play with other people you look back and say "holy fuck they were bad" like AD sion top that goes triple zeal first, zeals on cho, max W first corki. Has that ever happened to anyone else?

how long ago was this? Zeals have AMAZING stats for their cost, and it was even more pronounced before arpen runes (when everyone ran crit damage reds). Corki's W used to have a .8 AP ratio per second, 1000(!) range, and the mana cost went down with every rank (along with cd, which still does). Also, it could be cast while snared. Yeah.
As for the friends thing, I still haven't gotten better than TreeEskimo/TakashiX (who got me into LoL), just haven't put in the time/effort

Pshh everyone knows quadruple IE is the only way to go. Was it just he was trolling in those games because he was smurfing or just playing with you guys? quadruple zeals is a pretty famous dunk build.
Okay guys, lets talk about our noob days (pre-level 30) I use to rage at people for not going AP Ezrael because I thought he was a mage. I raged at someone for going mid as Kat because she is not ranged. I use to run teleport on Jungle Shen. Lane Udyr is shit...about half a year later, I was proven wrong. Oh yeah, I use to think the support role was just a filler role and cannot contribute anything to the team, now I main support. Oh and another one, I thought that Morde was suppose to build pure tank.
Nooby things people told me. Doran Blade is shit. Build a long sword so you can build it into something. Never get IE on Ashe, build a Trinity Force instead since you get a slow. Don't pick support.
And quick question, AD Carries up a free flash seem to be flavor of the month. What about Trist?
I used CDR/lvl runes for a really long time I went nashor's tooth/lichbane on just about every AP mana-user, (even when Zhonya's gave mana) If I didn't know what item to build next, I would default to Warmog's (even when kills/assists didn't give stacks)
...and I still sometimes call Black Cleaver "Executioner's Calling" by mistake because executioners use an AXE, dammit!
