i'd say taric counts in there as well. supports with burst and CC are less reliant on your adc skill difference. i'd say the enhancing supports like janna, soraka, nunu are the ones that do not do as well. In the other hand burst/CC support picks are not allways a good sign. Alot of ppl pick them because they want to play champions that have the least ressemblance to typical supports.
I play on a fairly low rating as well and I've come more and more to the conclusion that supports have the same influence as any other role in soloq.

When I started LoL i thought supports would have a real "protector" champ, because that's what I mained for YEARS in Guild Wars.
So I picked Janna as my first "main" champ. I was throughly disappointed how easy to play AND useless she was compared to GW prots. GW prots were hard, man. But when you did it right, it was MAGIC.
As to why most girls play support (I personally know some that don't, too): This is obviously not LoL-specific. In most games with a "healer" class, they play mainly that.
The thing with duo-laning is not really a reason I feel like.
IMO, girls don't really enjoy the "fighting" aspect of the game that much, they rather enjoy the "teamgame" part of it. Supports/healers are the most team-oriented class, and also it's usually easier to play. At least that's what everyone thinks when they watch a game. imo AD is easier than support, but you see the ADs carrying with all those kills and your mind is like "shit that looks hard.

Didn't Gosu Pepper smurfed an account with 33-4 or something crazy like that in ranked... playing almost only support (he did play one Orianna game... which he LOST). Well, a good support can feed a decent AD many kills... but i've seen enough ADs that were still behind after going 4/0 due to a huge CS difference. It really depends from where you start. 1300s, sure, the ADs are decent enough to not completely fail at lasthitting. 1200s... 50/50. Below that you can give your AD so many opportunities for a kill and he will only get himself killed most of the time.
You just sound that you are trying to still find reasons why you cán't win as support, while it is pretty obvious that a good support can carry just as anyone else.
Regarding girls, in TF2 almost every girl plays medic too.

10% extra true damage on crits would be disgustingly good.

I dunno how SK's top's been doing. He was only saved by the level-up while ignite ticked (around 80 HP after level-up and last tick) despite being 2 assists over Irelia, and her virtually oom when he attacked. Well now he's won obviously, with 49 MPen.
Also Ezreal shifting away from Morgana's SS right into Leona, that escape was cringe-worthy. :/

Corki is also a top pick. IEM Gamescom was all Corki and Ez picks nearly every game.

Leona E hitbox is weird. It's slightly bigger than the animation and it can go through people but count as a hit due to the isomorphic view.
