It has a lot to do with his bugs and how the vast majority of champs released after his heyday completely shit on his kit. I played the shit out of him in S1 and even after his nerf he was okay for awhile, but then too many faceroll champs came out that just shut him down largely without any conscious effort. You can play him from time to time as a 4th-5th pick with and against a very niche set of champions. | ||

malz's drop also coincided with the rise of AP sion and gragas, who both pooped on malz really hard (it also was at a time when some of the more popular current APs such as morgana, that are weak to malz, were less popular so he didn't have as many good matchups either). it sucked that their primary damage skills were shoot and forget, where malz's was channeled. what this meant was that you couldn't risk all-inning on sion on the offchance that he stunned at the same time that you ulted. if this happened, you'd be stunned out of your ult and he'd do full damage to you. same with gragas ult. both could hold off his push well too. malz just started becoming too much of a liability and was pretty poor in coordinated play. at one point he was permaban in solo queue and either not-picked in tournaments or had a really shitty win-rate. this patch is likely a case of overbuffing malz, but it's okay. there are definitely champs that can still deal with him effectively (ahri will have no problem with him, i think, thanks to the delayed cast of charm; cass, tf, viktor are all gonna be decent against malz) but his good-matchup pool should be expanded (i see him beating vlad, veigar, morgana, ap kog, karth pretty easily) again, loving the xin changes. really want to know who was in charge of them. with how much bullshit AoE bullshit is in the game, there need to be more options for clearing the battlefield. can't wait to see it in execution. eve/twitch will need to be seen. i think one of the biggest changes though is the GP change. gonna basically double his viability, since his gameplay atm is really passive. he'll be a great tourney/arranged play pick again, maybe not so much in solo queue. push me? okay i will farm for 40 minutes kthx. now i shoot you and permaslow easy gank gg. lol'd at phreak in the video: "sona is an underappreciated support" ... ? you shitting me? it was like 3 months ago that sona was mostpicked and mostbanned in every tournament and was faceroll every game. it's fine that she's less picked now, just nerf all the other supports down to her level too plz | ||

They're gameplay usability fixes that simply needed to be done (one could argue semantics, but you get the point). As it was, while i found his power to be pretty similar to most AP's, malz was really wonky in terms of some of his mechanics, most notably his minion AI, and they're essentially getting fixed. While I have had quite a bit of success with malz, every game there would be a couple of times where really weird shit happens regarding minions and the e+w+r combo that left some to be desired. | ||
