I saw a 3 ad mid with ww top and karthus bot on wwTabzz stream the other day, they got off to like a 10-2 start, but once it got to midgame the 3 solo lanes could 1v3 any of the ad mids and they lost pretty horribly.

Yeah that 3ad mid sounds kinda silly... since none of them would get any items...

they did the 2 buffs to start, 2 on blue ww tanking red for the third, so they walked into lane basically lvl2 and pushed down mid tower in like 5 min but it was all downhill from there.

Unfortunately riot only cares about the esport side of LoL as a marketing strategy... they don't actually care about people mastering the game and all the best teams playing each other.

Great point. Now I want sources and proof.

companies priorities are making money and thats it. esports is an advert for their game and so they support it. now while the goals of esports and riot overlap we all benefit but if they ever dont they will stop supporting it. theres no reason to suggest riot breaks the mold in terms of a companies goals.

TL;DR: Riot goofed when they rolled out ranked 5s teams by not providing any incentives and by making it stupidly easy to essentially reset your elo through making new teams. Fixing it is going to be a pain because players have already decided it's not worth their time.

The ranked 5s team rollout for season 2 was horribly mishandled. There were a million lessons Riot could have learned from Blizzard's mistakes with the Arena system and their successes with the LFD rollout, and they were almost universally ignored.

First and foremost giving players the power to constantly make and remake teams without significant penalty or cost is a recipe for disaster. In WoW this lead to arena teams recreating themselves every week and zerging 10 quick, poorly played games in order to get their points every week. In LoL this lead to a host of similar problems.
  • If you had a friend who wasn't a part of Team X yet and the team captain wasn't on, the easiest solution was just to create a new team. For groups without unified schedules (SEE: most everybody) it quickly became easier to have everyone quit/delete a team and create a new one every time, rather than sort out who was captain of what and who wasn't a part of which team.
  • If you lost a number of games and your team's Elo tanked during acceleration, it was easier to just create a new team than to try and climb out of the Elo hole.
  • If you won a lot of games but enjoyed stomping scrubs instead of playing even matches, there was nothing stopping you from creating a new team to jump back down to a lower rating.

Because of these factors the ranked 5s queue was largely populated with unranked teams, creating an Elo range where Elo meant nothing. Think the start of a new Season, only forever.
In addition, there's no apparent connection between ranked 5s and competitive play. When the best teams play against each other it's usually at tournaments or in scrims, and the rest of the time the individual players stream solo queue. What is the point of ranked 5s when ultimately they have no bearing on actual competition?

So you have a queue where the ratings don't have much meaning and the purpose isn't clear. On top of that it's harder to organize than normals. Without reward, prestige, or purpose there's little reason for players to care.

The second big problem was the lack of initial incentive to galvanize support for the feature. Blizzard learned after their failures with meetings stones and the original LFG that some tools/features require critical mass to be effective. If players merely tinker with them a bit before getting bored and moving on they will never succeed. When LFD was implemented Blizzard went out of their way to provide rewards and incentives (e.g. pets, titles, achievements, in addition to the benefits of the feature itself) in order to coax as many players as possible to try and feature and use it for a significant period of time.

Ranked 5s was essentially another meeting stone/LFG failure. It was novel for players to try, but had no staying power. As a result players dabble in it from time to time but it's usually easier to just queue for normals than try to organize a team, even if you already have five people.

--------------

So now that the context is out of the way, here's how it needs to be solved.
  • Any solution is going to involve carrot/stick to an extent. Players aren't going to flock to an old broken system just because it got patched it up a bit here and there (Blizzard tried this with meeting stones and LFG, to no avail).
  • Make creating, joining, and leaving teams more difficult. Whether it's through cooldowns, IP costs, or other means it must be done. You can't give the community a free Elo reset button and expect them to take a ranked queue seriously.
  • Don't underestimate the power of solo queue. It's easy to kill ideas for fear that solo queue will be marginalized, but the ability to quickly pick up a game is almost always going to trump any incentives or features that are specific to ranked 5s
  • Create opportunities for players to compete outside of the ranked queue itself. The serious players will find resources like Go4LoL on their own, but for the average layperson to consider ranked 5s an in-game system for players to complete in minor tournaments for prizes/fame/glory/ignominious defeat is an absolute necessity.

That last point is really the most difficult to implement. I'm essentially describing an entirely new feature, as alike to what we have now as the LFD was to its predecessors. Imagine a system whereby level 30 players with sufficient games played as a team could enter tournaments through the PVP.net client itself. To dream the impossible dream there could even be an automatic queue putting together mini-tournaments on the fly with incentives/compensation/diversions for players waiting for other teams to finish. In any case, the crux of that is that players need to be able to connect the ranked 5s queue to serious competition. As long as the ranked 5s system appears separate from and unrelated to actual competition interest will always be tepid.

They dont even have to have weekly tournaments. Something as simple as the top X at the end of the month get Y RP.
A month gives teams the ability to play now and then and still have meaningfull success and no tournament systems are needed. just have a ladder that resets every month (keeping hidden rating for matchmaking purposes).

All you have to do is credit for example 20 teams (10 us 10 eu) with some RP every month.

As for champion releases. Yes i would like them to slow down / stop releasing soon. there are more then enough champions and you can already feel that its becoming hard to find interesting things to do.
Unfortunatly due to being a F2P game Riot needs to keep churning out champions to keep people spending money. Its the nature of the beast.

I feel like too long-term of a competition like this would just have the same couple people winning RP every month-- and how do you deal with the same person being on multiple teams in the top 20? A regular tournament would force people to stick to one team and probably give more people a shot to win, especially if it were at different times week to week.

Because a tournament still presents the problem of not being able to play when it's convienent for you and your 5 friends to all be on at once.

Easiest way to get pros to play: 10 circut points for being in the top 10 of the ladder at the end of each week.

wrt to Riot tweaking old champs over releasing new ones; imagine if they assigned a team to say, Karma, applied the tweaks she needed and did a new skin/champ select art. This would take maybe 1-2 weeks and would generate them income. At 100 champs in the pool it's probably a good time to find out why people aren't playing champs that have been around for ages.

I did have the BEST idea for a support ever though: a mafia boss character. Think about it. Mafia bosses NEVER actually do their own killing and shit. They just make other people do it. They give them the means and the direction. What does that sound like? A support! And who WOULDNT want to play Michael Corleone?

Give him a passive where he gets bonus gold for every kill on the map (cuz mobsters take a cut), an ability where he throws a horse head at someone, causing an aoe fear (cuz whats more mafia than that), Some sort of buff where he increases damage by giving the teammate a better weapon, the ability to make a teammate invis for like .5 seconds with a speed boost (going into hiding) and an ultimate where he puts a bounty on people, increasing the damage dealt to them and the reward you get (like bounty hunter from dota).

Who WOULDNT want to play that champ, especially if you got the sound set right. Im convinced that 99% of the reason no one plays supports is that they dont WANT to be silly unicorn/satyrs or gay jewlers.

Mind: Blown.

Seriously, this would be crazy awesome. Even if the character were terribly weak, I'd play him just for the sound set and taunts.

Because say 20% of the players already bought karma. thats 20% who will not buy her. Unlike a new champion where you have a potential market of 100%.

Plus, one to two weeks of work to make karma balanced and fully produce one or more new skins seems super-optimistic.

I see what you mean, but there is still 20% of players who might buy the skin, plus the 80% of players who don't have her might buy the skin AND the champ...

THATS 120%!!!!

Character inflation is one of the serious problems with this game...

I hope they stop at 100.

Sorry if I missed it, but what happened to Diamondprox (not Diamondprox, I forget M5's other member...)? Watching M5 play in the Corsair Vengance cup and man they're doing poor. M5 hasn't really done anything since Alex Ich got injured :/

edit: it's Darien

How does one build against malphite in top lane? Feels like he just does w/e he wants most of the time cause he does both physical and magic damage, and is very tanky. Not sure how to deal with him :/

As what? Generally you can just ignore him and farm at will because you can't really kill him without a gank unless he is bad and he can escape pretty easily a 1v1 fight. He has a beastly gank support though so watch out for that.

I was playing as lee sin, just wanted to max W so I can sustain myself in lane. It kind of just turned into an afk farm lane until Shaco came and ganked. Then Malph got a catalyst and tabis and kind of just pushed me out of lane.
