Maybe a bit late but I agree with you because it's really fucking easy for the casters to just hide the chat. Like, it takes less than two seconds at the start of the game to hide the chat window. Phreak used to do it at every tournament he'd commentate. If casters don't want chatting they should just hide the window rather than have a rule against in-game chat.

It basically comes down to this: if you dont like someone's casting, it is probably a good indication that you really dont NEED them to be casting in order to understand or enjoy the game. So hit mute and do it for yourself. If you are relying on a caster to explain the game or high level strategies to you, then you probably arent in a position to actually determine whether or not a caster is good.
On the other hand, Koreans and Tobi Wan for Dota 2 just make the game enjoyable to watch, so who cares if you cant understand what they are saying or if they might hypothesize something incorrect.
Like with Moletrap: I know more about the game than he does. I dont need to hear him throw out ideas that are wrong, nor do I need to hear a play by play. I can just mute it and listen to some music. On the other hand, Jatt knows the game better than me (or at least did for the Kings tourney) so it was good to listen to his knowledge.
Play by play just depends on wether or not you like the guy enough. Deman and Joe Miller do a good job with it. Phreak sucks. But it is what it is. You dont like it, hit mute. You dont NEED them to understand what is going on (but again, if you DO need them, then you should shut up and watch anyway because you arent good enough to make the distinction between good and bad casters). Casters should either be really good at the game, so they can give deep strategical analysis or be fun to listen to. Of course some combination of the two is probably the best. However, I absolutely hate watching esports (and regular sport) with muted sound. Muting for the sake of bad commentators takes away in-game sound, audience "noise" and stuff like that. I don't really know why, but it makes it a lot less enjoyable to watch for me. I don't even know why they bother hiring casters when they aren't especially good at casting, aren't especially funny/charismatic and lastly know about as much about the game as your average 1000 Elo player. Edit: Forgot to mention what Craton just wrote: They yell annoying random shit. In LoL, an exciting play happens once every 20 games. And until the 20 min mark, you watch people play PVE. I think LoL needs the excitement/excited casters. It just makes watching LoL more fun.
Yeah I think you're right. The analysis part works way better in SC2 than it does in LoL. I still think there needs to be some balance though. Yelling "OMG AMAZING GANK, OMG AMAZING FLASH" at every little thing that happens isn't enough.
They need to know the game quite well to be able to tell the good plays from the less good plays when neither one results in a kill. If they can see the little subtleties and explain to the audience why something is good, they can make a seemingly boring game (boring being equal to low/no deaths) interesting to people without a deeper understanding of the game.
Edit:

Didn't even think of that. :O Taking that under consideration, it's kind of silly that banning in-game chat is even being discussed.

Being able to toggle off chat is a relatively new addition.
There's plenty of things that can be analyzed in any given match. There are a number of casters who take some of these opportunities.
There are a number of moments of excitement throughout the game from lane trades to invades to ganks to dragon fights to tower fights and to baron fights. The moments before significant objective fights add tension that is beneficial. Just because you choose to ignore these many moments doesn't mean they aren't there. That said, temper the level of excitement with the level of what's going on. Don't call a routine gank the most amazing thing ever when it isn't. Don't exclaim shock and awe and complete disbelief that someone pressed flash. If someone does make an exceptional play, it's fine to be excited by i.
Excitement for the sake of excitement is just transparent and bad for the viewer. Don't cater to the ignorant demographic who can't see beyond their own nose with the "CAN YOU BELIEVE X" after every single skirmish. Choose to analyze what both teams could do to press an advantage or overcome a disadvantage. Analyze what happened in a fight and what could've been done better / could still be done to recover, rather than repeating what everyone already saw, especially when you draw this out for several minutes and often until right before the next fight starts. I have eyes.
This strikes me as more likely to be for the Asian markets, especially China.

Lol I like SV's balls steal enemy red, almost caught, flashes into baron pit., smoothly takes his blue, take his red.

They already have their rental system in their client. This is the first time those files have been seen in the NA/EU client

Even before there was a proper toggle feature you could just move the chat below the UI and you wouldn't be able to see anything that was typed in chat. Phreak routinely did this at DreamHack and other big tournaments he commentated.

I like looking at chat though! What would the sc and sc2 community do if we couldn't read idra rage in tourneys?

I think the other good reason to ban chat is that it allows you to keep up the chat window which has some useful information (pings / streaks / etc.).
Also, these casters just called Kog'Maw idiot proof. Seriously.

I still can't believe SV gets such an early oracle and almost never gets punished for it >.>
EDIT: look at that, they just punished naut's oracle so hard, but sv just gets away with it all hte tiem.

But he gets away with it for SOOOO LONG, that he eventually pays it off with all the ward kills.
SV gets baron steal. w/ that latency.
does this make up for all the missed smites?

CLG used to be my least favourite team, but the more I watch them the more I love watching them. So torn, because Salce is pretty much my favourite player. CLG just so relentless, so intriguing to watch.
|
I can't not believe this is happening, I just had a huge losing streak, and when I finally started winning again I got DCed and the game that was basically won is now dissapeared...good job riot.
|
Going back to their roots of split push nidalee 24/7.
Well'p, that was critical mistake.
|
Nice baron steal by CLG especially with Korean ping.
