Life Steal and Spell Vamp quints will be interesting, and depending on the numbers may allow more APs to go top since they will have more "innate" sustain now.
% Health runes seem really interesting but I wonder how they will compare to things like hp/lvl across the board. Cho/Vlad/Volibear/Olaf immediately jump to mind as people who will like them but also many Atmogs goers will possibly want them as well.
What's concerning is these are mostly defensive runes and depending on their relative strength compared to existing runes may make the game more passive, since they make it harder to kill someone and improve their sustainability which decentivizes engaging them in the first place. Spell Vamp gonna be super good on Ryze (depending on the numbers). I'd love it if it'd make him less reliant on WotA late game. MS quints are essential and I don't really see why you wouldn't want WotA. I can't really think of a better 6-item build for Ryze than FH, AA Staff, Void Staff, Merc Treads, BV, WotA. why do you get aa staff? for the mp5? i always leave the tear as a tear til i have 5 other items and then i get manamune for autoattacks that your opponent will feel, and turret destruction. my 6 item build is: FH, manamune, void staff, BV, RoA, boots. your ult should be up almost every fight anyway with spamming skills lategame, wota seems like overkill.
Well, you get an AA Staff because there's no better upgrade for your Tear. Sure Ryze's AP ratios are subpar, but that alone isn't a good reason to get Manamune on him. He's not an autoattack champion, you don't have any armor pen so your autos do no damage regardless, and turret pushing is not your role. I don't like RoA because it's a lot of gold wasted on AP, and getting WotA in a complete build means that you are able to 1v1 anyone in the late game.

Ryze doesn't auto attack that often in fights because of his relatively short CDs plus the way Q works with other spells. Manamune gives ~100 damage to each attack (before mitigation), while giving 39 damage to each q, 118 to W, and 69 to each bounce of E. AA gives you more burst and generally more damage.

Lichbane Lux actually has full retard burst, it's like 1570 + 218 + 4.05 or 5.05x AP depending on if you land the third auto or not.

im still not convinced. its not that ryze's ap ratios are subpar, its more that he doesnt even have ap ratios on 3 of his 4 skills. i guess i can get a AA next game and see if i see any difference.
and its true ryze isnt meant to push towers, but having the ability to late game can be useful. if you're the last one left after a fight it would take forever to kill a turret, with manamune you will get the inhib before they spawn too. against low hit point champs like shaco in a 1v1 situation your manamune assisted auto attacks will definetly be felt.
i guess i can try wota instead of roa next game too. i really have no trouble 1v1 anyone late game with my build. i will see if its easier with wota. roa adds 630 health and 725 mana fully charged, +80 ap to help out e. it might not be the most cost effecient item for ryze, but i find it effective.

huh wow the tooltip in game only lists mana as increasing damage. i just checked a site and they do have ap ratios albeit shitty ones. in that case i can see aa is better.

i guess ill get aa staff from now on. ive been playing a lot of ryze the last month, def. my favorite champ. i think im probably good enough with him to play some ranked and not embarrass myself. i tend to own pretty good in normals (just finished a game before i got on tl, went 14-5-17)

Should still basically keep it as Tear until all your slots are full, but yeah, Ryze is one of those champions where best-in-slot items are pretty cut-and-dried. Every single good Ryze goes the build I listed and I don't think there's even a judgment call to be made about any of those items unless other team all magic/all physical damage or something like that. Ryze pretty fun, I just don't like how much farm it takes for him to get strong but I might pick him back up.

Ryze pretty fun, I just don't like how much farm it takes for him to get strong but I might pick him back up. ya i noticed theres a point (generally when i finish FH and BV and tear is farmed up) where i start owning, but before that can be a grind. i find it amusing when ppl playing anivia or cass or the like play super aggressive in the early game, and by the late game im blowing them up in seconds. ill probably steal your build i guess, thanks for the input.

The thing that keeps me away from Ryze is his god awful auto attack range/animation/damage. Such a pain in the ass to farm if you can't bully the lane.

I think the main reason I don't really like playing AP characters is because of how so many of them have these really bad attack animations.

fiddle's attack animation is that way for me. just looks stupid and takes forever.

Gonna be so sad when they remove dodge completely from the game, it's so good especially in lane against champs like trynd, really good against irelia/vayne, they're gonna be a bit stronger when dodge gets removed lol.
