you can peel apart tanks and tanky dps. for the love of god don't get a roa on him. mana and cdr are his dps items. a woa is what makes him broken combined with his ult I think its like 50% spell vamp on some crazy throwing shit. you've never seen someone able to just shit on everyone until you've seen a ryze soraka bot lane. constant harass and farming with the dps to just zone out everyone though q toss and walk away or starting with the w then qeqrqw(cuz your running past him to stay in range when he flash's)qeq and you've got a pretty good chance for a kill or at the least a hard back tear ,merc. manamura if your farming is a little off and you want some extra dps. woa and a FH is the rest of the core for me at least. spirit visage. but yeah, hes a dps mage that relies on cdr and mana not ap. | ||

I would honestly recommend one of the more common ones, like Brand/Annie/Malz/Aniv just so you can learn an easy champion who does well. For higher skillcap APs, Cass/Xerath( and Kass sort of, depending on who you're against) | ||
