In my opinion it would be a very costly gain that was much less than they hoped for and would probably depend if trade with the west ever restarts to determine if it was a geo strategic success.

It depends on the objectives. Previously NATO was in decline, Europe was increasing dependency on Russia, Russia was getting rich, Russian politics were infiltrating the west, Crimea was treated as a fait accompli, and Ukraine was stuck in limbo forever. NATO is expanded and rearmed, Russia has lost soft power leverage, they’ve lost a colossal amount of revenue, they’ve lost all their work on political influence, Crimea and other annexed oblasts won’t be recognized, and any part of Ukraine they don’t seize now will be forever beyond them. Things will never again be as good for Russia as they were in Jan 21.

I can go to any public place and support Russian war and have 0 consequences appart from looking like a fool. A Russian cannot go to a public place and say anything against the war. You guys need to learn to protect your brain from whataboutism. Another bad thing does not make your thing good, you just show how biased you are at picking your point of view. Seeing anything bad made by another army the way to say that what your army is doing is good can make anyone look like a fool. Yet again, only Russians that have that bias feel free to write about it publicly. The reason is simple. Russians against the war have nothing to win from publicly speaking about the war (even here), yet those speaking for the war have nothing to lose as well. Even if the dictatorship falls, usually the only way to rebuild a country is to pardon everyone and pretend for 50 years no one was responsible for anything. Probably, but failing to deal with the recent past can come back to bite a country for century. Just look at the US, which failed to properly deal with the civil war. I admire Germany for succeeding in this! Western countries are also only now opening up some uncomfortable closets of WW2

The levy is expected to raise about $4 billion, a high-level finance official told RBC TV. Russia posted a first-quarter deficit of almost 2.4 trillion rubles amid the war in Ukraine. (From JimmiCs source) So basically, that is doing nothing. The difference between a billion and a trillion is the same as the difference between 1$ and 1000$. Even including the ruble course of 1$ = 84 rubles, it is not huge. If you were 2400$/quarter in the red, and your solution is to find 4*84 = 336$ under the couch once, that will probably not work out well to solve that problem.

So this happened. A report had been released depicting a single Ukrainian strike causing casualties of upwards of 200 Russian soldiers, as they were assembled togheter for an extended period of time (reports differ on exactly why they were massed. Some claim they were going to give a pep talk, others report they were unloading ammunition) The best thing Russia has done for Ukraine in this war is continuing to only use the most incompetent commanders

Ukrainians are laughing at that level of incompetence and I can bet there's plenty that want him promoted further to make the job easier on them in getting rid of the Russian invaders.

An unidentified object fired from Belarus at a Polish Border Guard vehicle passed through the vehicle narrowly missing its occupants, it has been revealed. Speaking at a meeting of the parliamentary subcommittee for citizenship, foreigners and migration, which was devoted to the situation on the border with Belarus, Colonel Arkadiusz Tywoniuk, the deputy director of the Border Guard (SG) Headquarters, said the incident took place a few days ago on the Belarusian border. "The object pierced the side window of the vehicle, flew out the other side, and broke another window," he said. "This threatened the lives and health," of the two officers in the vehicle, he continued. Just what the object was has not yet been determined. Colonel Tywoniuk said that the SG has become is concerned about the increasingly aggressive behaviour of foreigners trying to cross into Poland. Throwing stones at officers and the destruction of equipment, he added, was now commonplace. In 2021, Poland's border with Belarus came under huge pressure from thousands of migrants trying to get into the country. Last month, the Border Guard reported an incident during which officers were pelted with stones after they stopped a group of 13 foreigners trying to get into Poland in the Białowieża Forest. There is no chance of accidental escalation here. Deliberate, sure. But not accidental.

Then a regional war becomes a very big one rather quickly. All the while Belarus, and Russia continue to weaponize said crisis. Source Doubtful there will even be any diplomatic reaction. A Russian cruise missile flew hundreds of kilometers into Poland and no one batted an eyelid. The happenings on the Polish/Belarusian border are hardly news worthy anymore.

Interesting BBC article about the number of Russian fighters who have died in Ukraine thus far. They go into the changing face of the people who have died over the course of the conflict; explaining how this has changed from being mostly young, professional soldiers to mostly old, non-professional convicts. They believe that Russia are holding their professional soldiers back for defence as they are running out of well-trained troops. They also talk about people who are still trying to find out what has happened to their loved ones. That there are people who only know that their loved ones died in Ukraine because the BBC told them is startling. I probably shouldn't be surprised, but I am.

I wonder if there will be a concerted continent-wide effort to grow more food and become less reliant on imports. I feel that it's unlikely for Africa to ever completely unify but they might be encouraged to work together much more closely.

Seeing as Africa's biggest problem for the last century or so has been food production, I'd be surprised if the Ukraine war has any impact at all on domestic farming.

It doesn't really matter why the problem exists (bad incentives is no doubt part of it... overpopulation and desertification is another large contributor). The problem has existed for a very long time, and the lack of a fast peace treaty in the Ukraine war isn't suddenly going to incentivize working toward a solution if way larger changes like the end of colonization or the end of the cold war changed things for the worse (in the narrow scope of Africa's self-reliance on food production) if they changed anything at all.
