I’m a bit concerned because my wife is on the other side of the country right now and my small company will be greatly impacted if he enforces mandatory business closures. Not that I’m opposed to it at all because it’s the right thing to do, but getting my wife home safe and healthy is all I want. I wish you and your family all the best! Get your wife home! Thanks! She flew into San Francisco on Wed. night and comes back Monday - luckily she’s staying out of populated areas throughout. Fingers crossed, because her grandma is currently living with us (thankfully she doesn’t go out) and she has major heart disease and diabetes, which are two huge risk factors.
Probably for the best to limit contact between her gramma and the rest of the family, just to be sure. Your state maybe have information telephone hotline being put in place, give them a call if you hadn't have the time yet to know what to do in your situation. Edit: apparently there's a new CDC website, maybe there's some info on your situation there.
Also, I know it's unrelated, but I had forgotten how much Trump's a moron, wtf is that press conference, I don't give a fleeting fuck about the PDG of Wallmart and Target, giving parking lot. Seriously the chief of the medical staff had 30 second to explain her policy and what the US was actually going to do in a national state of emergency, and we're on 15 minutes of PDG doing pr statement (and now Pence's pretty much just stroking his ego).
Still on the interesting stuff, it look like mass testing + no more visit to elderly homes.
Good luck everyone!

Trump: National emergency. We are way ahead of this. We also basically abolished the FDA so that we can just crank some random shit out.
Question: Do you take any responsibility?
Trump: No, I take no responsibility at all

I am not sure if my country feels like they have some innate weird ass belief that we are superior to other countries, our measures so far arent drastic enough I feel, schools are still open basically, the argument being that if they close then important medical personel have to take care for kids.
Thats cool but uhm ive seen primary/high school kids and their hygienne.....ehhh.
We should learn more from South Korea, Japan and several Eastern European countries I feel.
Either that or my country is run by geniusus who can balance the economy and the pandemic perfectly ( lol, doubtful).

He looks pretty baked in the beginning...

and then Pence steps in to fellate Trump for like 5 minutes and try and translate what he said into English, which apparently is simply that Google came up with some online test so go do that and you'll be fine, nothing to worry about. what??

Someone directly asked him if he was concerned on being positive after his meeting with Brazilian delegates which one of them tested positive, and he responds with “no we haven’t had any symptoms” when earlier he mentioned “you can be a carrier without symptoms”. Just wow.
Also bringing the billionaire executives from Walmart/Walgreens/Target is so weird.

In my province they shut down the schools and kingdergarden but they opened special child care services only for medical personnel and essential worker, seems like a good balance.

My school just announced a preemptive shutdown for all of next week - better safe than sorry, in New Jersey. We'll be teaching remotely/online.

How does that impact teacher pay? Are you guys equipped to just suddenly go fully online?

The daycare my wife works at announced exactly one change in policy in reaction to this. Everyone is still expected to work and only gets 12 sick days a year. Before, a child is sent home with a 100.5 fever. Now they're sent home with a 100.4 fever. (Farenheit)

Teacher pay is normally contractually allocated evenly though the year regardless of actual hours because teacher hours are weird. They should still be getting full pay.

Yeah we're salaried on an annual basis, so our pay isn't affected at all. We also have a reasonable amount of infrastructure in place for most of our students to easily access our online sites and sources, so it's going to be a lot of digital work that wouldn't be as ideal as having classroom interactions, but better than literally doing nothing for a full week. I can certainly still create and post videos for my students to watch, math problems for my students to practice, online homework assignments for them to submit, etc. We're keeping the daily schedule (how we rotate classes each day) the same too, so if I were going to see an AP Statistics class on T/W/F in person, I'll be posting work for them to do online on those same days, and they'll still need to get it done (although the time constraints won't be as stringent).

I don't know, I think people under 65 years old overreact as if this is the Spanish flu. Sure, old people or those with weaker immune system should be protected but come on, what's happening in supermarkets is madness. Lots of shelves are empty in my country and there is national emergency until 29 March. Just crazy.

Emergency declaration has turned Walmart into an apocalyptic zombie movie scene. Parking lot overfilled, huge lines at every checkout, people sweeping down aisles like locusts. There’s no way there aren’t a few infected people among the horde so I’m assuming they’re all going to get infected now. Total madness. There’s no shortage of anything except masks and sanitizer where consumption has gone up faster than supply. For everything else consumption is holding steady and supply is plentiful but people seem to want to stock up their houses with a year’s supply. Like fucking toilet paper is sold out. It’s made in the United States out of trees grown in the United States. There’s no shortage. In a few months sales of everything will drop to nothing as people realize that they can live off of what they have stockpiled.

This toilet paper stuff looked weird to me, but it starts to make sense. I guess people use it for ethanol / alcohol based solution to disinfect. Still, what's happening to supermarkets is beyond insanity.
Here's what is happening at supermarket here: + Show Spoiler +

What's happening in grocery stores and other scenarios showing a dramatic, yet misplaced reaction are not especially related to whether the emergency is severe or not.
