China could have .0001% population in science and have more than the male population of South Korea.

Not everyone with high GPA's, or high IQ's are geniuses, those things really are not a measure of true intelligence.

Yes, you're right I guess.. that was a little besides the point. I just think she MUST be smart besides insanely motivated to work. Don't you agree?
When I wrote what I wrote I was considering she must have high intelligence, otherwise all the hard work or nerd-ness in the world wouldn't have brought her that GPA
What I wasn't considering, though, is that indeed she MAY not be all so smart. But I don't think we should underestimate her, even though we really don't like her lifestyle

She HAS common sense for working hard, otherwise I don't think she is anything special. And to tell you the truth, I thinks its pretty stupid of you think she is somekind of genius based on grades. Please don't make any stupid/ignorant assumptions like this. Not all real smart genius people fit the category that fills up a slot of your flawed perception or stereotypes.

BTW to that one korean person, since when did Koreans started winning international science olympiads?

Since when...? There are a lot more Korean medalists at MIT than Chinese. More than a ratio of 3:1.

I always got at least 8 hours of sleep in high school. She makes it seem like a big deal. Girls like her will come to MIT and get like 2 hrs of sleep a night. They complain a lot more than they actually study.

Oh I see, because there are 3 times more Koreans than Chinese in this category at MIT it means that there are therefore more Koreans than Chinese in thsi category in the world. Thanks for this explanation. Cause you know, there are so many more Koreans than Chinese. China could have .0001% population in science and have more than the male population of South Korea.

When did I say in the world? I said, at MIT the ratio is 3:1.

I never even mentioned the world, wtf? What's up with you Chinese getting so riled up? You are the single largest population on this planet. Hell, you guys BETTER have more Olympiad gold medalist and genius scientists than the rest of us.

Who cares about how many Chinese people there are? You still lose the medal count to a bunch of smaller nations at Olympics. I think it's a classic example of quantity vs. quality.

"You Chinese?" Are you being fucking racist.

just kidding. I must say that I would like to see some actual data to support your MIT and Olympics claims though.

That's total bullshit. "Extra credit"? As far as I know, honors courses only adds a single point to your GPA. Thus, the highest GPA you should theoretically be able to obtain is 5.0. The average GPA for UC students from our high school was around 4.3, and the average GPA for top tier privates was around 4.5.

Speaking of MIT, a friend of mine who currently goes there said, "Yeah, MIT tends to accept a lot of girls. You have to have a vagina or you can't get in."

Yeah, apparently...

Just go to a high school with massive grade inflation. You'll get in anywhere. I have a feeling she won't last long at MIT.

If an A is 6.0 in an AP class I don't understand how she even got an 8.0 for ONE class.

She sounds so naive I also expect her to do horribly. Only getting 4 hours of sleep? Wow!

Umm, I might be stupid or something, but can someone explain this to me?
I thought GPA was sorta like an average out of 4, and that 5 is a perfect score for AP classes. So if you get perfect in all AP classes, how does that average to an 8? So, does every AP class inflate her grade by one? Does that mean that you can get a bunch of 4's and end up with something higher than 4? That's so weird, I don't understand the system at all.

Nah, PE is mandatory. But yoga is very popular..... which makes me wonder if we actually get any exercise even with the required PE.

yea, like they change the rules so china don't rule in weight lifting/table tennis/badminton. Also wonder how many medalist that usa have bought, I personally would like to in a country where people represent my country are actually born here and is a through and through.

edit: anyway, would still like to know how powerful this girl is if she is on an english system....or no one know the comparison?

Everyschool system grades differently. BUT it ends up evening out because at a certain time in the year the kids take a certain test that gets sent somewhere out of the state to get graded that grades the school, NOT the students. The colleges you apply to look at this school grade as well as your personal GPA. Soooo.... if this school she's going to has a shit (i forgot what the test is called sry) school grade. then that means the classes shes taking are too easy and thus the reason for her rediculously high GPA. They would rather take in a 4.5 from a school that scored high on this test then an 8.0 from a school that hands out points for taking a shit in a urinal.

and to all of you that are saying GPA's and IQ's are just numbers and dont mean anything. u r idiots. i assume income is just a number too.

Yo, chillax~

Any-how,

I guess I don't know that many of the Korean Intl's @ MIT. But, I don't believe that there could be such a big gap between medalists in number; one of the IPhO kids from China told me that there were... I believe, 3 kids from the Chinese math team who transferred this year. Now, maybe this was a special year, and a lot came over, but it seems like if this ~3 people thing was approx. true for past years too, then... there can't possibly be a 3:1 ratio.

Anyway, I don't want to argue with you. International kids are, in general, frickin' smart.

End of story, yeah?

I must have the hardest grading high school around. There's nothing above a 4.0 here, no matter how AP a class is. You need 95% for an A(or 94.5% rounded up by a nice teacher), A- counts as 3.7 no matter if it's honors or AP, no such thing as A+, etc. My 3.82 got recalculated to a 3.97 by college standards and pretty much any 3.9+ is taken as a 4.0 by colleges. I think we just don't like having multiple Vals/Sals.

That said, 8.0 is like post-WWI Germany money.

Times like this it feels great to be a happily married engineer and computer scientist who never cared about high school at all. :D

.. edit, but my wife. She cared about high school. Very much. I think she had a 4.3 GPA.

I agree about the 8.0 being complete BS, but despite that, maybe the girl actually is smart. Who knows. Give her a break. Sounds like people are just jealous of the media attention. But the media likes to hear BS like "8.0 GPA".
