my fucking highschool doesn't weight AP classes any different than gym class and pottery class and shit.
i've gotten all A's and B's in my AP classes, and all A's in regular classes, and i don't even have a 4.0
Uhhhh that's because an A doesn't necessarily mean a 4.0.

Weighted GPA in general is dumb. Colleges can look at your curriculum and know whether or not the GPA you have is worth a damn. There should be absolutely 0 weight and the 4.0 scale should not be desecrated by some kids who are taking relatively basic college courses.
The amount of merit one receives for taking a semester long college course in twice the time and with twice the amount of classes is way over-exaggerated.

Tom, how does an A not mean a 4.0? --;
Thats the one universally accepted grade in America. A = 4.0. That and F = 0.

MIT GPA goes up to 5. so 5 = A -.-;; I didn't know this but some guy from work told me (his from MIT).

The amount of merit one receives for taking a semester long college course in twice the time and with twice the amount of classes is way over-exaggerated. Wrong. Class rank still pulls a bit because if your high school is unknown, they have no idea how academic the rest of your school is or how easy the classes are so they use the rank. I was ranked 9th when I graduated, but my course load was twice as hard as everyone of those kids in front of me. I just managed to get one 89.2% one semester (we count only A, B, C etc instead of A-, B+, B, B-, etc) after joining an AP class 9 weeks late sophomore year (only one in my grade in there) but because there was no weighting, my ranking fell.
Thing is, it can be argued they can just look at my schedule and know it was very vigorous. But what they do not know is how I match up with my peers. They can see I was #9 with one B, but does that mean the ones ahead of me are taking the same course load as me yet still pulling the 4.0 or are they taking the easiest classes and getting 4.0? Without a school reputation and without weighting grades, they cannot know this for sure. So for accuracy's sake, why would weighted GPAs be such BS?
And you complain about the merit of the AP system. So I guess AP Calculus (with twice the time and amount of classes as college) is just as hard as Pre-Algebra, eh?

AP Calculus in HS sux. I can tell you if you take straight Calculus in College, it will be much harder -.-;;; than your AP Calculus course.

my school doesn't weigh grades but colleges do... right?

Trust me, whatever you're taking at the "advanced college level" really isn't beyond what you'd find in a entry level community college. It cool they let you take classes that won't bore the tar out of you in high school, but it honestly isn't much more impressive if they are holding your hand in Trig (where the non-accelerated high school kids end up) or calc.

you said the word irk..thats pretty funny..but i mean its fair, if your in highschool and want to take higher level classes why shouldnt you be able to get higher grades? it just shows you have the determination and the drive to better yourself at a younger age.

I don't know, all schools are different. People calling her a nerd, calling her stupid, or bound to fail in college, just shut up. You guys obviously don't know what you are talking about. She took AP and college classes, and she received A's in them. I'm willing to bet she aced her AP exams too. If she succeeded in college level work, she will probably do very well in college. She is also very hardworking, and extremely motivated and intelligient.
You can call her an Asian, or a girl, or a total nerd. She's better than you. Social life? Probably a weak one, but most overachievers still have fun. Good grades, activities, clubs, friends, sports, leadership, and this usually brings in popularity. I'm willing to bet she's really well-rounded.
umm as for the idiots insulting her 8.0 GPA, when she applied for MIT she must have written: 4.0 unweighted, 8.0 weighted. Do you kids know how colleges pick students? Part of the criteria involves difficulty of classes ( Honors, AP, IB) and classes offered by the school. That means if one school offers AP Environment Science and another doesn't, that will be noted. If one school offers 6 AP's, and another offers 7, that will be noted. If a student takes all 6, and a student takes all 7, then they both will be treated somewhat faily. If a student takes all 6, and the second student only takes 6 as well, that will be noted. Her school offers 7, but they only took 6. sorry if I confused you.
Also, colleges will see if the school's AP classes are actually meaningful. They might look at your AP exam score to see if your AP class was easy-medium-hard. All schools vary. Finally, they'll probably have an universal grading point scale. I had to take PE during my freshman/sophomore year of high school. Some just skip health/geo/pe and go straight to AP Euro or AP Physics / Statistics. How is it fair to compare those that are forced to take P.E. and those that got to take a weighted class? Well, colleges will figure it out. They won't compare a 8.0 to a 4.6. Their scale will probably make it something like 4.9 to 4.5.
