Part of me wonders if Mitch is planning to be the one to take the fall by not even letting the vote happen. So everyone can say they’d vote for something that won’t even be allowed to happen? That still helps Democrats in Georgia but not as much as Georgia candidates opposing 2000
If he does take the fall... so what, he just won his Senate election, I'm sure he feels extremely safe at the moment, so I wouldnt be surprised to see just that happen.
Hes old enough that he doesnt exactly have a ton of time left in office, so this could be one of his last Fuck Offs to Americans, lol.

I just don't understand what downside there is for Republicans to hand out $2000 of taxpayer money back to taxpayers? Even if the economy continues to tank they can simply blame the new Biden administration. Do they honestly care about the ~300 billion or whatever that will be added to the debt?
|
Their wealthier supporters wouldn't like that.
|
I dont even fully understand why their wealthy supporters wouldnt like it, a lot of that money is still going to wind up in their hands right?

McConnell blocked the vote. It's over.
And no, Republicans don't care about the deficit. It's just the excuse that pops out like a Jack-in-the-Box whenever a Democrat wants to accomplish anything.

Ideally, the funds taxpayers graciously paid to the IRS would not have already been spent many times over, to enable the kind of national emergency spending for stuff like once in a century pandemic.
Now it’s more borrowing, and hard to defend smaller payouts given the rate of increased borrowing under both Republican and Democratic administrations when there weren’t (major) wars and pandemics.

If Loeffler and Perdue still win despite this then this country deserves its fate

Indeed. McConnell has played the game very well so far, but I really hope this is the time his tactics and values blows up in his face and he loses his power.

Democrats are born talented at losing.
That dark cynical pit in my brain is telling me "Warnocke and Ossoff will both lose and itll be by a 5+ point margin."

He takes the heat for the group by allowing them to promise what they like only for Mitch to tie their hands when it’s time to deliver. They could replace Mitch whenever they want, they choose not to because they’re collaborating. They wring their hands and publicly wish things were otherwise while keeping him in his current position. Obviously Mitch is awful, but he’s just the lightening rod for the hate of the public. The Republicans, most of whom claim they would vote for the payments, blocked the vote.

It makes you wonder if the GA electorate can be trusted to identify the fact that a vote for Warnocke and Ossoff is a vote against McConnell as Majority Leader. Democrats are going to need to POUND THAT FUCKING MESSAGE HOME.
Make this about McConnell, Loeffler and Perdue got their chance to say, "golly gee we wanted to but Mitch wouldnt let us " so I hope they consider that tying Loeffler and Perdue's seats to a McConnell-as-Majority-Leader-Shituation might play as more pertinent that Warnocke or Ossoff winning because of who they are or Loeffler or Perdue winning because of who they are.

McConnell is almost unique in his capacity for not experiencing shame (the only other person in politics who can match him is Trump, but Trump is dedicated to protecting his image enough for it sometimes seem like he has it).
Seems like Trump isn't happy about it, at least.

There is nothing in their life they value above power. I would posit that example is because Cruz is a coward, rather than that is because of his being incapable of shame (which I agree on).
McConnell is also a shitload smarter than Cruz or the vast majority of GOP senators. Cruz is probably CAPABLE of it, but he's not capable of getting into that position : he's too bad at interpersonal politics to ever become Majority Leader.
The other shameless ones are usually untalented morons and the few smart ones (like Hawley) don't appear willing to publicly back something that would kill all future non-senatorial aspirations.

The downside of passing this quickly is the lost opportunity. They've identified this as being important to Democrats so they can now:
a) see what they can get in return for it
or
b) ask for absurd things in return and then say "see, Democrats care more about protecting tech giants / hiding evidence of the rigged election than increasing your stimulus"
The gamble they took is that there's virtually no difference of outcomes between their GA senate nominees mouthing support for the increased stimulus and actually increasing the stimulus.
It's not about sticking it to the poor as others suggested, that implies caring one way or the other. It's a game.

That makes sense. A bargaining chip.

nothing like the POTUS tweeting about his colleagues death wish if they don’t follow his lead.
and that isn’t even the news here. god bless the end of 2020. i won’t miss total desensitization of drivel from the presidents mouth and fingertips. though i’ll have to try to miss any of Biden’s improvised appearances.

If getting rid of 230 gets people 2k stimulus, I’m down. The fallout would be amazing and would force us to completely reassess what the Internet ought to be in the US
|
After reading about 230, dems would be dumb to be discouraged. Repeating it would be so impossible to implement that telecoms would immediately lobby to essentially roll back the change. It is a poison pill worth swallowing
