North Korea and South Korea exchange fire after patrol boat violates sea border NORTH and South Korea have exchanged fire after a North Korean patrol boat violated the South Korean western sea border, agencies are reporting. North and South Korean naval patrol boats briefly exchanged fire Tuesday near their disputed maritime border, according to the South’s defence ministry which said the North’s vessel had violated the boundary. The defence ministry said the South’s patrol boat had initially fired a warning shot after the North Korean vessel penetrated half a nautical mile inside the South’s territorial waters. Instead of retreating immediately, the North patrol boat opened fire, so “our side fired back,” a ministry spokesman said, adding there was “no damage” sustained by the South Korean vessel. Although the incident went beyond warning shots, the spokesman indicated that neither side had made a concerted effort to hit the other. The incident took place around 9:50am (11.50am AEDT) near the South Korean border island of Yeonpyeong, when the North patrol boat crossed into the South’s water, a ministry spokesman said. ..... Source On one hand they're trying to pull the peace card and now this provocation? Perhaps those claims of a power struggle in Pyongyang itself aren't too far from the truth...

Damn that dastardly Kim Jong Eun and his pretense of illness whilst carefully orchestrating a patrol boat spray n' pray into SK waters. A navigational error/rogue idiot seems more likely. Both probably thought they were on their side. To put the recent conciliatory talks and this random, pointless incursion on the same level is plain silly.

How weird would it be for their to suddenly be a (remotely) open North Korea? Could the people even handle being teleported into the 21st century? Or is the speculation that it's a more aggressive/repressive (if that's possible) regime in the coup?

BEIJING/SEOUL, Oct 9 (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is in firm control of his government but has hurt his leg, a source with access to the secretive North's leadership said on Thursday, playing down speculation over the 31-year-old's health and grip on power. North Korea's state media, which usually chronicles Kim's whereabouts in great detail, has not made any mention of his activities since he attended a concert with his wife on Sept. 3. The source said that Kim hurt his leg while inspecting military exercises. "He ordered all the generals to take part in drills and he took part too. They were crawling and running and rolling around, and he pulled a tendon," the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity. "He injured his ankle and knee around late August or early September while drilling because he is overweight. He limped around in the beginning but the injury worsened," the source said. Source

Two Koreas exchange gun fire after S. Korea's anti-Pyongyang campaigns SEOUL, Oct. 10 (Yonhap) -- South and North Korea exchanged machine gun fire across the tense border on Friday, after the North apparently tried to shoot down balloons carrying anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets floated by civic activists in the South, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said. Some of the North Korean shots landed south of the border, prompting the South's military to fire back in response, according to the JCS. There were no reports of casualties or property damage in South Korea, though no details were known about the situation in the North. "Shots could be heard from north of the border at around 3:55 p.m., and about an hour later, rounds apparently fired from North Korean anti-aircraft machine guns were discovered near the military camps here and the community center in Yeoncheon," a JCS officer said, requesting anonymity, referring to the South's border town, from which the balloons were released. "Upon finding them, our military broadcast warning messages six times and fired back around 40 rounds from the K-6 machine guns from 5:40 p.m. toward the North's guard posts (GPs) along the border," he said. ..... "Some 10 minutes later, a handful of bullets flew toward our GPs, which caused our service personnel to fire back nine shots again," he added. The North apparently fired shots first with the aim of shooting down the balloons, but Seoul officials said they could not confirm whether the North's attempt was successful. At around 11 a.m., the civic group named Fighters for Free North Korea flew some 200,000 anti-North Korean leaflets in 10 balloons in the border village of Paju. Some three hours later, another civic activist sent 23 balloons carrying 1.32 million similar leaflets toward the North from Yeoncheon. ..... Source Using AA guns to shoot down balloons?
