Why do people even talk about North Korea? It's not like they pose a threat to anyone but their own starved citizens and a couple abducted journalists. It is just a pariah state.

How could you possibly think that is a good point?

They have nuclear weapons and Seoul is 35 miles from artillery in the DMZ. They pose just the same threat as all the other so called 'rogue states' have in their respective regions.

Well, they claim they have nuclear weapons. Last I heard there wasn't much evidence they had working ones.

It's just a situation that is basically hopeless. No one can get in from the outside and I guess China can influence them from the outside but only to a limited extent probably.

we talk about them much more than a random african country because north korea keeps threatening the worlds 3rd largest economy and the worlds 16th largest economy. Remember how much Sep 11th affected the US economy? Now imagine what happens on the way out, North Korea blasts Seoul and Tokyo.

Wouldn't be too surprising if a coup really did happen. Maybe they're tired of empty threats of nuclear annihilation and war rhetoric, and finally want to build up their country? Besides that I heard that China was just getting tired of dealing with NK, and I'm pretty sure they're their only ally (don't remember the news source but China was pressuring NK to start negotiations I think).

Nice to hear something good happening overseas; besides ebola, middle east war and civil wars, global warming...

And? Who did NK invade in last decade?! Hypocrisy knows no bounds and people never change or learn.
All those countries that Western World told had no 'rights or minimum life standards for citizens' know have nothing but ruins - no water, electricity or food under democracy is better than having them under dictatorship? Ok lets invade NK and bring em 'life standard of live now like there is no tomorrow'.

NK routinely attacks South Korea and constantly engages in hostile rhetoric against South Korea, Japan and the United States which would, if any other nation did it, start a war. The only reason North Korea is allowed to get away with literally shelling the civilian population of its neighbour is because it does so while holding a knife to the throat of the South Korean capital. Make no mistake, North Korea is every bit as bad as people say it is. It is only prevented from continuing the Korean War by the overwhelming strength of China and the United States, denying their warlike nature is like claiming gravity doesn't exist because a rock doesn't fall through the mountain beneath it.

50 years ago if North Korea was doing what it does now nobody would blink an eye if they were attacked, crushed and their way of life destroyed. Hell, if it wasn't for China's intervention in the first Korean War that is exactly what would have happened. Our world is run by cowards, to concerned with what someone else will do if they do something. No leaders have balls anymore. Well, no leaders except Putin and whoever is pulling the strings in NK.

Well the US had a leader with balls. Didn't work out great for their citizens (unless they happened to be private security contractors).

I'm sorry, this is slightly off topic, but I can't help asking. This is the same thread that was originally named "NK says / does alarming things".

The title has now changed. Is this because NK itself has changed? What recent events have made the thread title change its name? Or is it just that NK is no longer considered a threat or something? That doesn't seem to be the case, considering Kwark's last post?

Basically, Kim Jong Un hasn't made a public appearance in a few weeks now, and the last public appearance he's made he was limping a bit, making people speculate about his health. Also, NK has started to talk to South Korea again, fueling speculations that Kim Jong Un might have been overthrown and replaced by a more peaceful group. Or something. But with anything NK, nobody knows anything specific.

I think its more to do with the news being posted here becoming increasingly pedestrian.

Not really. The change of tone is quite remarkable. They said they might suspend nuclear program, no nuclear tests, first time high official is travelling south, they want to have talks etc etc. Kim's month long absence. The rumours about factional intrigue. None of that is really pedestrian, but surprising and non-hostile.
