What would China do if it decided to topple the regime? Assimilate it into China? Make it some kind of SAR, or hand it over to the South?

NK can't fire on flippin anyone unless they want the Korean Peninsula to become the Korean Archipelago. If they ever nuke someone, it'll be as a we're-going-to-die-anyways retaliatory action on their part.

I don't think the Chinese would bother with that. They don't care what people think of them and would get radical action (and they would be right).

Of course this is just IMO and not trustworthy :p

probably hand it over to the south.

China has enough problems dealing with tibet and xinjiang. Why would they want more?

I doubt that, because they will have a US ally in their backyard and they do not want this.

aren't taiwan, japan, and south korea already close enough to be "in their backyard"?

Not in the sense that there is direct land border between china and any of them. Looking into history, such a border would most likely be source of many inconveniences for china.
Also, if you check this this list, no neighbor of china has a US military base in it (afghanistan excluded, which is obviously a special case in many ways) as of now.

Beijing is one of the few cities in the world that would get less polluted if it gets hit by a missile.

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but the current status quo of us not having a nuclear apocalypse is entirely dependent upon nuclear attacks being met with nuclear counterattacks. If NK nukes someone and DOESN'T get nuked back, then the world is fairly fucked because tyrants can then use nuclear weapons on a whim, without fear of immediate and absolute destruction.

And the Weekly Darwin's Award goes to...

North Korean detainees Kenneth Bae, Matthew Miller and Jeffrey Fowle plead for US intervention in CNN interview

A group of Americans being held in North Korea have used a television interview from Pyongyang to plead for the US government to intervene.

The three US citizens are either convicted or facing trial in North Korea. Kenneth Bae, Matthew Todd Miller and Jeffrey Fowle have given interviews to US network CNN to explain their plight. The three men said they were being treated humanely but asked the US government to get more actively involved in helping resolve their situation.

"I've been asking the American government to act upon getting me released here," Mr Bae said. "I do believe that a special envoy needs to come in order to resolve the situation I am in right now."

.....

Mr Miller, 24, who was arrested in April after he reportedly ripped up his visa at immigration and demanded asylum, pleaded for help from the US government.

"My situation is very urgent, that very soon I am going to trial, and I would directly be sent to prison," he said.

All three men said they signed statements admitting their guilt, CNN reported.

.....

CNN reporter Will Ripley said officials told the crew that each interview would be conducted separately, would last five minutes and would address limited topics, including any message the men might have for their families or the US government.

It was not clear to what extent the detained Americans were speaking freely, although they all had similar messages and Mr Ripley said that the rooms where the interviews were conducted were full of North Koreans watching.

Source

The best part of it though?
Matthew Todd Miller:

"My situation is very urgent, that very soon I am going to trial, and I would directly be sent to prison," he said.

What happened to seeking asylum in NK a few months back Mr. Miller? Grass not green enough over there all of the sudden? Not quite the "worker's paradise" you were expecting? Why ask for help from the same wicked imperialist government that you're trying to run away from eh?

Oh, and a complimentary missile launch while we're at it:

North Korea Test Fires Short-Range Missiles In Sea Of Japan

North Korea claims to have successfully test-fired three short-range missiles with a range of slightly over 100 miles.

Fired from the testing base in Wonsan on the east coast, the projectiles flew 130 miles before falling harmlessly into the Sea of Japan, the South Korean military told the New York Times.

South Korean officials said the action by its Communist neighbor tested whether the new missile exceeded the range of North Korea's KN-2 missile; they believed the same missile was test-fired by the North Koreans last month and on Monday as well.

North Korea said it successfully tested a newly developed tactical missile after test firing five-such missiles last month.

In fairness we only have NK's word that he did that. Also a life of slave labour isn't really a fair punishment for being really, really dumb once.

US man gets six years hard labour in N Korea

North Korea has sentenced one of three detained Americans to six years of hard labour, a statement carried by state media said.

In the statement issued following a trial on Sunday, Pyongyang said Matthew Miller committed "hostile acts" as a tourist in the isolated country.

...

North Korea has yet to announce a trial date for fellow US citizen Jeffrey Fowle, 56, from Miamisburg, Ohio, who was arrested in May this year for leaving a bible under the toilet of a sailor's club in the eastern port city of Chongjin.

A third American, Korean-American missionary Kenneth Bae, is serving out a 15-year sentence for alleged "hostile acts".

My sympathies dont go far for anyone visiting NK. You know the consequences before you even make the plans, you know the consequences as you make your plans, you are likely told by every sane human being you know to not go to NK... and now he is dealing with his poor decision. So are the other foolish people currently imprisoned in NK for "hostile acts".

poor guy, he's been asking to get retrieved yet american who visit such countries are blacklisted by their own government...
anyways, do you guys still believe NK does alarming things (besides starving its own people) ? i mean they're no real threat to anyone even if their new missile can reach china, they would'nt launch it against the only country that provides them everything they have.

when this thread started, people where talking about nuclear war and shit. nothing happened of course. If we were to name the actual threatning(to worldwide peace) countries, those who have invaded countries recently, we would list Russia, Usa and Israel. I don't know who we should be worried about really...

How exactly is that blacklisting? No government is responsible for saving you from your own stupidity.

The U.S. State Department issues many warnings prior to Americans travelling to NK. If that's not enough, the 7 other Americans who have been detained in the past should have already given you a clue about these kinds of incidents happening to people to travel there despite being warned.

No real threat to the South that they want to turn into a "sea of fire" or reunify under their control through force of arms?

I guess those peace-democratic-self-sufficient-loving North Koreans must be holding hands and singing kumbaya at the DMZ against the evil Yanks and their puppet Southerner slaves!

Apples and oranges.

Neither of those countries (well...maybe not Israel if things got desperate enough for them) would ever actually use their nuclear arsenal to blow up their neighbours. That doesn't make what they're doing right of course, but everything else is just chest thumping at the international level.

people who travel to certain places such as NK or Cuba are then blacklisted in every airport in USA. they will never ever go in and out without being thouroughly interrogated and searched. that is being blacklisted.
on the responsiblity part, goverments maybe shouldn't be responsible for one' stupidity (that is if we acknowledge this guy as stupid) yet they feel responsible to intervene where people "stupidly" choose communism over capitalism (think of panama, chile, argentina and so on). i guess they have a wierd sense of responsibility.

you surpassed yourself on that one. NK is basically a crywolf, they talk alot to gain lever towards international community and to legitimate their government towards their own people, but do we know yet if they have sufficient nuclear tech to make 1 bomb?

I'll give it to you, but then how do we mesure "threatening". casaulties? then, NK isn't threatning compared to its occidental fellows
nuclear potential? again NK isn't super threatening
ideology? degenerated communist, fascist and capitalist "democratic" governments all have killed many and done terrible things.

my point was just to put things in perspective, to be critical of our occidental governments whose dirtybusiness is hidden under the mat while we are in awe seeing NK's agressive stance.

If we have to pay a few million dollars in ransom to a hostile foreign government every time one of these idiots leave the country, you can bet we are justified in thoroughly vetting them every time they want to leave the country again.

You have a startling lack of perspective if you are comparing the dirty laundry of first world western governments to the dirty laundry of third world countries. Night and day, buddy. Night and day.

I was born and grew up in a third world country before immigrating here in the US. Your complaint is what we would call a "first world problem".
