Maybe it's different for others, but a poor person could still get by without ever paying a single tax dollar.
But name one rich dude who doens't own a nice car/home/boat all are taxable.
Meh my uncle is easily top 0.5% and he drives a cheap old 2002 volkswagon, lives in a house that is smaller than mine and doesn't like boats. So there is one person for you.
Anecdotes aside, Very high sales tax would make it much harder for low income families to make purchases which would be bad for the economy as well as make life unnecessarilly harder for them. I would also argue that for most people who want to make a decent living a commute to work is probably likely, therefore gasoline is needed.
And the Stalin rant you are going on almost makes it sound like you would not mind the poor dying on the street provided the rich do not have to pay higher taxes.
I was thinking really hard of a way that the poor contribute to a society and that was all I could think up.
Who do you think works all the shitty jobs that your bourgeois ass can't be bothered to take?
I do my own dirty jobs.
I've scrubbed floors, emptied trash, lubed jets, delt with hazzardous chemicals, cleaned toilets, painted walls, stocked shelves, paper pushed. Even now as a Military member I do dirty jobs- just today I ran an obsticle course through low crawling through a pig field, training. If you can low crawl through a pig field and not puke you can do anything. I was reaking and hadto take several showers afterward.
Ok, so you're a self-hating proletarian. Ideology has sure done its job on you.
Here's an educational handout for you:
"hazardous" "obstacle" "reeking"
“Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.” -John Steinbeck
Socialism never took root in America cause people want liberty. People don't want to be told what to do or think. Liberals (the left socialist movement) are already trying to take soda away from people. I personally think people need to slim down- we got alot of fat bodies in America (note if your fat your not going hungry, hence no one feels sorry for you) I do not however want to tell someone to put the soda down, it is there choice to be self destructive if they so choose. All I ask is that you don't take me down with you--like poor people who take away from my tax dollars.
In only this page, you've described how hard you work for the small amount of money you don't want to have to part with. Why are you doing such jobs? What else might you do? How much might you make? Do you realize how much money other people can take home on the back of what people like you are doing? Look what happened to you when you broke a bone. What happens if you suffer a more serious injury? How have you managed to convince yourself you're free? Can you convince me?
Edit: Kwark isn't pulling his punches, but what he's written is true. You're proudly faciliatating your own social exploitation, while denouncing those working in your interest. I only wish you could see it.
I can not describe the color red to a blind man. (i'm not calling you blind the sentence is just words of wisdom that have been passed down to me).
I am happy. I am fullfilled, my needs are met. I am neither hungry or ill. I can worship my God in peace, one day I'll get married and experience family life. I will have a home to call my own shortly if all goes well. I am not so abused as to not be able to have this computer that I am typing to you on, with solid internet, in my air conditioned apartment.
Are you happy? Are you fullfilled?
You're being short sighted. You claim to be content with the status quo. Life is pretty dynamic sometimes. Let me ask you this. If the bottom falls out from beneath you, how far can you fall? Should the govt. not be there to break your fall? If you get injured and can't work and don't have insurance, how fucked are you? What if your wife ends up leaving and the courts decide you need to start making payments to her? What if your kid gets cancer?
You made a distinction between hand out and hand up. The social programs I would say would break your fall you are calling a hand out. What you called a "hand up" I call trying to pick up the pieces. You value personal responsability (typical of the right wing, the left wing values social opportunity, in fact both are important), but you're too proud to admit that health care costs are simply out of your league, regardless of how responsible you live your life. And even if they weren't out of your league, think of all the Americans who don't have access to basic health services. You're in the military, presumably because you're fighting for the principles of the constitution. What does fighting for a document accomplish, if social injustice is considered acceptable?

OK, this is why social opportunity is fundamentally important just like personal responsibility is important. They're two sides to the coin that is social progress. It's so that this divide isn't so pronounced.

Not in America. Middle is working.

Americans don't have a working class.
Taken from wikipedia: "In Weberian socio-economic terms, the middle class is the broad group of people in contemporary society who fall socio-economically between the working class and upper class."
And much of the working class in the USA current struggles to put bread on the table. If they were to sustain an injury and require medical attention, that would be it. Don't you think it's better to have a preventative system of "hand up" speaking to relevant social problems and limitations, rather than allowing someone to plummet into financial ruin over a broken bone, then "helping" him rebuild his life from square one?
Struggling to put food on the table... who told you this?

Move to Canada for a year. Just try it.
My fear is that Romney's policies will only widened and deepen the income gap between the 99% and the 1%. That by cutting taxes for the rich, deregulating or loosening regulations on businesses, and closing tax loopholes that benefit the middle class and small businesses , you're just going to shrink the middle class further and further.
Frankly, I think what you'll end up with is a country like China -- where a small percentage of the population is middle class or extremely wealthy and the vast, vast majority are poor, and have to take horrible jobs with no future just to survive. The kind of country where there is no toilet paper in public washrooms, because people will just steal it (if you were making an average salary of $250-$300 US a month working 50-60 hours a week, you'd steal toilet paper, too).

You mean like when the Romans surveyed the surface of Mars? History only repeats itself when the conditions for events are repeated. In the case of mistakes, history is only repeated when people repeat the conditions for those mistakes (i.e. social injustice).

Because in-person voter fraud simply doesn't happen. The risk of assuming someone else's identity, compared to the benefit of gaining a single extra vote, is fucking absurd.
Since the year 2000, there have been 10 -- I repeat, TEN -- cases of in-person voter fraud. That's all these laws prevent -- it doesn't prevent any other kind of voting manipulation.
You will not find anyone else on this board that will justify these laws as anything other than a deliberate attempt to suppress voter participation.

I've only tested the firefox one personally but it has added a convenient little block button which hides his posts.
THANK YOU. I was wondering if TL had a squelch option. No more SayGens, no more NonCorporeals, and no more dvorakftws! Yay!

I don't think you're all poor by any stretch- some of you may be more well off than me. Larger assets, more security though maybe not in terms of firepower, I must say I am good with my M4--all kidding aside-- I do think you all believe in a pro socialism/progressive movement. That movement will kill. That movement will harm. Do you know what happens when have and have nots meet? Death. Usually for the Have nots-- in the event that the Have nots win- they become haves and start oppressing the new have nots. It's a sad cycle of life- but history has and always will repeat its self. I choose not to play the game- even though I often get thrown into it. You all fear a status quo- I don't. The American status quo is still a land of opportunity. If I wanted more in terms of material possession- I could obtain it. I could get off TL.net right now and go learn a skill at the free educational centers America has been blessed with (build and funded by the rich btw) and put that skill to use and earn more. I however do not need more, I am happy. I am satisfied. I worry not about what others do, so long as they leave me alone. In a socialistic world you tear down the rich and make them poor, the poor become wealthy- but the society rots as production turns into nothingness. If we all get paid the same- why work hard? Why work at all? If there is no competetion, there is no reason to ever improve.
That's my apocalyptic scenario for America.
I could copy and paste that and replace Romney for Obama.
You could try, but it wouldn't make a lick of fucking sense.

Yet your entire existence as a member of the military is premised on the grounds of the single largest experiment in socialist theory in the United States...which is the military.
The irony of a serviceman arguing "if we all get paid the same- why work hard" is absolutely fantastic.
This is so false I don't even know where to begin. Ridiculous epic fail that highlights your ignorance on the armed forces. Former Corporal USMC. Served 2008-2012 (got out in March) and I can tell you first hand that you make about 600$ a month throughout boot camp...get a pay raise when you get out, and get another pay raise every time you get promoted. By the time I got out I was a Corporal (E-4) and had learned Arabic so I was also receiving FLPP (Foreign Language Proficiency Pay) so I was making just under 3000$ per month by then.
So where the fuck is this socialist bullshit coming from? They don't take Generals' money and give it to Privates, its called you work your way up.

?
No, that was introduction to Western Civ 101--college
Seriously? You had a history professor who told you "history always repeats itself"?
Yes, followed by several examples- from the start of civilization around the Mesopotamian era to modern time.
He used different lens (perspectives) as well not just the typical Have and Have nots. He got into things like the Human Condition, Evolution, Trend patterns, etc. History has been and continues to repeat itself.
You mean like when the Romans surveyed the surface of Mars? History only repeats itself when the conditions for events are repeated. In the case of mistakes, history is only repeated when people repeat the conditions for those mistakes (i.e. social injustice).
Your 100% correct, so why then do the conditions keep getting put into place--- The Human Condition. Our need to compete, segerate, and undermine each other is part of who we are at a genetic level. We set the conditions, because we are human. This can be a very long, and in-depth topic and would start to derail the thread, so I'll have to refrain. Alot of the mods who moniter this thread don't share my views so I have to be on my toes about certain things- and have to remain on topic- if you really want to discuss it we can do it through PM if you'd like.
