Dumb video. Why wouldn't you need a picture I.D. with your name and a photo of you on it? That would make it so easy to vote as someone else (or someone who is dead, which has happened in the past)

No, that was introduction to Western Civ 101--college
Seriously? You had a history professor who told you "history always repeats itself"?
Yes, followed by several examples- from the start of civilization around the Mesopotamian era to modern time.
He used different lens (perspectives) as well not just the typical Have and Have nots. He got into things like the Human Condition, Evolution, Trend patterns, etc. History has been and continues to repeat itself.
You mean like when the Romans surveyed the surface of Mars? History only repeats itself when the conditions for events are repeated. In the case of mistakes, history is only repeated when people repeat the conditions for those mistakes (i.e. social injustice).
Your 100% correct, so why then do the conditions keep getting put into place--- The Human Condition. Our need to compete, segerate, and undermine each other is part of who we are at a genetic level. We set the conditions, because we are human. This can be a very long, and in-depth topic and would start to derail the thread, so I'll have to refrain. Alot of the mods who moniter this thread don't share my views so I have to be on my toes about certain things- and have to remain on topic- if you really want to discuss it we can do it through PM if you'd like.
Growth is part of the human condition. That's why political policies and society's vision of morality evolves. Anywho, I'm gonna head home. G'night all.

Voter fraud of the sort these I.D. laws are supposedly meant to combat is actually very, very rare.
Why not prevent it?
Because in the process, you'll do more harm than good by enacting an effective poll tax on the millions of citizens who do not have some form of photo ID.

THANK YOU. I was wondering if TL had a squelch option. No more SayGens, no more NonCorporeals, and no more dvorakftws! Yay!

(for myself, I would simply be disturbed to walk into threads in which others were conversing with ghosts.)
I don't think you're all poor by any stretch- some of you may be more well off than me. Larger assets, more security though maybe not in terms of firepower, I must say I am good with my M4--all kidding aside-- I do think you all believe in a pro socialism/progressive movement. That movement will kill. That movement will harm. Do you know what happens when have and have nots meet? Death. Usually for the Have nots-- in the event that the Have nots win- they become haves and start oppressing the new have nots. It's a sad cycle of life- but history has and always will repeat its self. I choose not to play the game- even though I often get thrown into it. You all fear a status quo- I don't. The American status quo is still a land of opportunity. If I wanted more in terms of material possession- I could obtain it. I could get off TL.net right now and go learn a skill at the free educational centers America has been blessed with (build and funded by the rich btw) and put that skill to use and earn more. I however do not need more, I am happy. I am satisfied. I worry not about what others do, so long as they leave me alone. In a socialistic world you tear down the rich and make them poor, the poor become wealthy- but the society rots as production turns into nothingness. If we all get paid the same- why work hard? Why work at all? If there is no competetion, there is no reason to ever improve.
Yet your entire existence as a member of the military is premised on the grounds of the single largest experiment in socialist theory in the United States...which is the military.
The irony of a serviceman arguing "if we all get paid the same- why work hard" is absolutely fantastic.
This is so false I don't even know where to begin. Ridiculous epic fail that highlights your ignorance on the armed forces. Former Corporal USMC. Served 2008-2012 (got out in March) and I can tell you first hand that you make about 600$ a month throughout boot camp...get a pay raise when you get out, and get another pay raise every time you get promoted. By the time I got out I was a Corporal (E-4) and had learned Arabic so I was also receiving FLPP (Foreign Language Proficiency Pay) so I was making just under 3000$ per month by then.
So where the fuck is this socialist bullshit coming from? They don't take Generals' money and give it to Privates, its called you work your way up.
You seemed to have completely missed his point.
His point is completely retarded because it is 100% false.

What is his point? He straight up just made that up, so there is no point to be made. I knew plenty of servicemen who busted their fucking asses to get promoted, I got my PFT score to 287 and my CFT score to 300 to get promoted faster than my less athletic peers, but he wants to say we argue "if we all get paid the same- why work hard" essentially just putting words in service members mouths.

How hard is it to get an ID? If you are a citizen you should have a birth certificate and a social security card, last time I checked those are the only things you need to get one. If you lost those, you can get new ones, also not very hard to do.

it costs money, and is therefore a poll tax

Then how do you prove you are a citizen without an ID? and how do you prove that the information you are providing is YOURS without a picture?

Actually, from what I've seen, the States that have passed these voter I.D. laws offer such IDs free.

Usually it saves them the trouble of arguing that it isn't a poll tax when challenge. I have no issues with free ID and then requiring ID at the voting stations. In fact, a free ID should be standard - makes it a lot easier to keep track of people.

Sigh.
Okay.
The military is, in a manner of speaking, a uniquely "socialist" institution.
It's entirely government run. It's funded entirely by taxation. It offers lifetime health and retirement benefits to its members. Across the branches of service, the payscale is equivalent (as per SayGen's link above) between ranks. Yes, there are promotions and yes, advancement occurs, and yes, plenty of opportunities exist to expand one's monetary compensation, but the underlying theory of the military is quite "socialist" to use the word in a more liberal sense. An E-2 will make, by and large, the same as another E-2.
If you join the military, you will be taken care of for the rest of your life, assuming honorable service.
When people think socialism in contemporary terms, surely we aren't idiotic enough to spout out Marx and other foolishness. Instead, we think of a welfare state based on socialist principles in part. The military provides a host of government-run and PAID services funded by the taxpayer for the benefit of its members (education, healthcare, retirement, childcare services, the list goes on).
The only difference between what the US military provides in terms of a "welfare state" for its members and what a true welfare state provides for its people as a whole is that in the US, only those who serve in the armed forces are deemed worthy (by virtue of service and sacrifice) to partake in said benefits.
Point being, the benefits one reaps as virtue of being in the armed service is a damn near spitting image of the benefits provided to society as a whole in a Western/northern European welfare state. All paid for by the taxpayer. All a result of government involvement. All built on the back of society as a whole and not individuals.
When someone like SayGen makes these ridiculous claims that the poor are poor because they don't want to work, that the government by and large isn't responsible for his own personal success and satisfaction, that he is himself a self-made man in the true spirit of American individualism...yet says all these as a government employee that gave him everything he has in life to where is now...that's the irony.
This is the same link as before. It analyzes his budget promises, and essentially comes to the conclusion that he has no plan whatsoever (unless he cuts literally every federal program outside of SS, Medicare, and Defense).
Romney's 20% cap in spending won't work well because of the increases in Medicare, social security and interest that will be hitting down the road. That said, there should be room for discretionary spending cuts - a lot should be automatic as the economy improves and the stimulus wears off. Back in the 90's total spending was below 20% of GDP for a few years and things were pretty good.
Edit: why the hell does he even propose such things? His strength is supposed to be his prowess and a financial guru / manager. He should be running on a platform of micromanaging the budget so that cuts happen and revenue increases with minimal pain.

Meh, if you knew what Marxism was you wouldn't feel that way. You probably think it is about "technological determinism" and "dictatorship of the proletariat."
