Bought a new pair of pants, tried a new brand had to use a belt to wear it, going to return them. Turned out my waist was never a 32 even though i buy 32x32 my waist is 35, hips 40, inseam 31. Now i can never trust to buy pants online unless i already own the brand to know what size i am with that brand. Such a headache, surprised there isn't any governing body standardizing sizes.

My guess though, is that an internet fashion subculture, probably found in 4chan, has co-opted the word of "cop" meaning to steal, which is still active amongst cockney theives and prison criminals, where to "cop an object" is to steal it, often within close proximity of the rightful owner. Presumably, they found the price such a "steal" that along with the rise in popularity of British labels, they have used an old British slang of to steal and used it as their own. ? what the literal meaning of cop means to "acquire" and it's been that way forever. i think it's technically not even slang when used in this manner

Experienced this aswell. Got lose 32 waist and tight 34s so you never know what you'll get. However I like belts so a bit too large is ok I guess. I'm pretty sure the problem is not US based but worldwide. Plus most trousers are made in the same sweatshops regardless of brand.

I've asked NMWA about them and was told to go 1 size down. also they were 30% off a while ago, and a pair sold for $175 on ebay in my size a month ago.
