So what do you guys think about the Zynga shares following down so rapidly. They have not been able to gain any new users in the last 3 years and they are not able to retain there old users any more.

I work as a game designer in a social games company and this scares me a lot. Do you guys think there is a future for social games or they are just going to die out....

This is the image of there downfall in the last year

http://www.google.com/finance?client=ob&q=NASDAQ:ZNGA#

And the article about zynga dying is here....

+ Show Spoiler +
Zynga’s shares continued a downward spiral for a third straight day, sinking more than 9 percent today to hit an all-time low.
At one point today, the stock dipped as low as $7.97 a share before closing at $8 even.
At that price, it is $2 below it’s initial stock price of $10, and has lost at least 20 percent of its market value in less than a month.
But why?
The San Francisco social games company has launched at least two new games since going public, and over the past few days, no harsh analyst report has come out with a negative rating.
It appears the once high-flying Silicon Valley company — known for addictive games on Facebook like FarmVille and CityVille, and mobile games like Words With Friends — is having a hard time gaining the market’s confidence.
To be sure, there’s no clear answer for the price drop; and other tech companies that recently went public, such as Groupon or LinkedIn, have experienced their own fluctuations. But there is one theory making the rounds.
Analysts and other sources suspect Zynga’s stock has been propped up over the past month by the underwriters, who agreed to buy shares if the stock started to perform poorly. The stock purchases would have created steady demand for the stock and kept the price relatively stable.
Furthermore, the theory goes, the underwriters have since met their obligations for buying the stock, and therefore are are no longer buying as many shares.
Incidentally, on Friday, Morgan Stanley — one of Zynga’s underwriters — disclosed that it had purchased nearly 16 million shares in December.
But while the disclosure, filed with the with the Securities & Exchange Commission, adds fuel to the theory, it is unclear if those shares were purchased as part of the IPO, or if they were spread out throughout the month.
Zynga declined to comment, citing its quiet period.
Still, whatever the reason for the drop, Zynga’s shares are seeing less demand.
As recently as last week, the stock was trading at $9.45 a share, but since then, it has struggled to stay above $9. On Friday, it lost 12 cents; today, it lost 81 cents, or 9 percent.
But even if the underwriting theory is on the mark, it doesn’t explain the broader question of why Zynga’s stock price is falling. Shouldn’t there be other investors who are willing to buy up a piece of Zynga?
Unfortunately, it seems the market isn’t sure what to do with the stock, or how to value it.
A social games company fits somewhere between traditional game makers, like Electronic Arts and Activision; and an Internet stock, like Google or LinkedIn.
Zynga gives away its games for free, but still manages to be profitable from selling virtual goods, such as a tractor or more power-ups, that a small number of players elect to purchase inside the games.
It’s also heavily reliant upon Facebook, which could be another problem. Facebook, too, operates privately, and reveals only as much information about its business as it has to — at least until it files to go public, which could be later this year.
In all likelihood, many of these investor fears could be settled when Zynga reports its first period as a public company. No word on when that will be yet, but the fourth-quarter report should come as soon as this month, and no later than February.

Aren't all but single-player-only games, by their very nature, social?

Unless you mean "Are stupid facebook app games going to die out", in which case, All signs point to yes.

If you look closer Electronic Arts is having the same downfall in the same period, and i really don't think that such a giant company will die any time in the next years.
I think it's because of a market downfall not just a Zinga downfall...

There is a future for social games, they revolve around not rehashing the same bullshit Namco has done, but worse.

I think the risk of being involved in a thing like social games, or social networks for that matter, is that internet trends die just as quickly as they grow. Just look at things like mySpace or Digg, they were both quickly replaced by other services.

I don't think social games are the problem. I just think people are becoming wiser that micro-transaction are not fun in the way zynga implements them.

Games die out with time. Social games are no exception. If Zynga wants people to keep playing their games, they need to innovate a game that is worth playing more-so than the competition, and bait back people who don't really game now they are over Farmville or w.e (eg. my mother, most of their other users)

These facebook apps are nothing but a tred,Zynga marketing probably knew who they were targeting with this product and knew it would expire, just like it did on so many other social networks.

It's the way of life, everything comes to an end at some point. This logic is ironically enough applicable to something that never lived as well, like social games.

Not surprising at all. They had a main product, Farmville, which was hmmm intriguing at the beginning, looked like an online sim-city but with RPG elements, I even admit playing it for a while.
Then the game turned into a "spam-your-friends-to-unlock all-the-items"-fest. And once you're like "omg how did that game become suddenly so crappy", you receive an invitation from Zynga for a similar crappy game, the farm theme being replaced by a city theme, or a castle theme or whatever.

Good riddance!

I am too addicted to their poker game...

And throughout my whole time playing Zynga poker I have never realized, until a half year in, that Zynga made the games like Farmville.
Money was meant solely to be spent.

Dying? No. Adjusting to better represent the value of the company? Absolutely. Zynga's IPO was ridiculous and there's no way the company is worth as much as they claimed they were, but their profits have been rising for three straight years and there's no indication at this time that they are going to go in any other direction but up. Zynga is extremely, extremely good at what they do, and even with all the (sometimes justified) hate there are still tens of millions of people out there who play their games on a daily basis.

I think it''s good that they are dying.

Which is quite sad, because these games are the cancer that kills gaming.
My younger sisters plays shitgames like these whole day long, and when she finally plays a good game (i bought her the new zelda) she cant play it for 5 straight minutes without looking up a guide because her attention span is even shorter than mine.

It would be good if Zygna were to die. They've done nothing but steal ideas and advertise better than the people they stole ideas from.

I played mafiawars on myspace; that was Zynga right? Also played farmville and maybe a couple others when I used FB. It seemed like back then "gameplay" (used loosely here) was less about advertising for Zynga and more about just playing a simple game with friends or strangers.

Now you have to spam invites, pay microtransactions, do surveys, or buy promotional products...all of which are about the least fun things on the planet. I think if Zynga wants to get back in the running they should change their business model from "advertise for us for fun" to "network with simple games you can play with anyone for fun."

As long as there are bored people with computers then there will always be a demand for "social" games.

That thing was just ridiculously overpriced, and everyone's known it since the IPO. They were priced as a brand, which they are not. No one cares about Zynga, they do care about their games but that doesnt mean they'll buy the next one if it's a flop. And given how competitive this industry is getting it's not unlikely.

I'm not at all surprised to see it drop, if I could've shorted it I would've. It doesn't mean anything for the industry (although things will certainly get tougher for them IMO), it just means that it was overpriced.
