I thought I'd make a thread exclusively for DJ'ing and Music Production. I figured this could be something separate from the EDM thread if we have enough people on tl.net who DJ/Produce.
I've been producing for six months using Fruityloops and now Ableton. Pretty terrible but it's a lot of fun! Here's my soundcloud; everyone else should share theirs too. :3 http://soundcloud.com/justanobody
Also, those contain my tunes so far And if anyone is interested, on the site www.lsdb.eu you can find mixes of me in a variety of styles such as: Hardstyle, Hardcore (+Gabber), Dance, Trance, Hardtrance etc.
*justabitofselfpromotion*
Also, I recommend hercules gear, the buttons itself aren't that great (I have an MK2), but the durability and what you can do with it is awesome
I have been using Ableton Live for mixing as well. My (superbly amateur) mixes include mostly electronic songs, but some dubstep are there to be found as well. I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I enjoyed putting them together!
Nice, I write in Cubase 5.0, Use, Albino, Vanguard, Sylenth , Gladiator, Predator. Been writing for about 8 years, stuff on my soundcloud is a bit old, got a few releases. Nice thing you have going here, I produce psytrance http://soundcloud.com/terrorbyte , would be nice to also get VST guides/demos in this thread.

Nice one mate, you'll have a blast once you do. I'd seriously recommend reconsidering your hardware choice though. Regardless of how it may seem now, you will pick it up quickly and want to play gigs at some point! Learning on a digital controller won't help you for live mixing, unless you bring it with you and look like a bit of a tit 2nd hand decks and serato are cheap as and very much industry standard
edit: oh and if anyone wants help on promotion and how to get yourself out there for bookings give me a yell! I've put on or played at hundreds of events and stuff, so know a few tricks about working with venues and getting your foot in!
I was wondering, since music production somehow always narrows to electronic/dance production, if there are actual record producers on TL. I mean people that spend time in studio's recording drums for their pop/rock/whatever tracks. I'm a popproducer, and even though I use a lot of synths and always program my demo's, but for the final track I actually record stuff in studio's. I've made all kinds of different styles, both acoustically and electronically. (Johnny Cash, Gaga, Imogen Heap, Foo Fighters etc etc all kinds of stuff :-)). Mostly I focus on more synthheavy popsongs, but to get around you need to do all styles you can get jobs for . Are there more people here that are more the (contemporary) studioproducers instead of danceproducers :-)?
I'm just getting into producing now using Fruity Loops. Anyone have any recommendations on how to get started? Some good tutorials/forums for beginner/intermediate level? Or should I just experiment and see what I come up with? Mostly interested in making downtempo/mellow hip-hop beats. Cheers
Here's my soundcloud with mostly progressive house stuff that I upload from time to time. Haven't really been into it lately, every time I open up fl studio I just end up getting annoyed and do something else. t.t
I use ableton live, saving for suite, and a very large electric piano I bought for playing the piano, I then discovered I could use it as a midi controller. I'm still trying to learn the basics; there's a pretty steep learning curve. I do produce house and some dub and hardstyle. Its fun

Do you have a lot of experience with DJing psy-trance? I really want to start to DJ psy-trance/ambient and perhaps some other electronic genres. But i have no knowledge nor piror experience. Do you think i should start doing it on my computer? And if i buy decks + mixer that wont sound really shitty, how much will it set me back (used or new)? Also what are your tips on beatmatching and so forth. Are there any good guides to getting started in those genres?
I started my professional DJ career yesterday. Me and my friend got our own club event. Had a music quiz, played some Benny Goodman, played some Beastie Boys, played some Prodigy. Shit was wild.
Other than that, I've been noobing around with Virtual DJ and a Reloop midi-controller. The controller is pretty shitty though, so every time I want to make a mix I get discouraged. Hopefully I can look past that and start to make some mixes. I'm going to try and get some gigs at other clubs as well.

I spent several months learning and getting comfortable on FL only to wish I had initially invested all that time learning and getting comfortable with Ableton. Just a heads up; I feel you can do much more with Ableton, and the interface is far better suited for complex automation.
Youtube is your friend. Start by watching introductory videos that give you a tour of the interface. Once you get comfortable with the interface you can start learning how to make beats, and from there, synths.
Been producing for about 5-6 years now. Don't really have much I can upload atm, As the mc's would flip out. All my music is from samples over all era's of music. I sample 2011 stuff to childrens tv vinyl I have aquired from 1962.
Equip// MPC 1000 DMXPRO-Mixer 2 x Numark TT200 12 Channel mixing desk And 100's of vinyl.
Been fiddleing around with Ableton Live for around 2 months now. Made a few songs with some guides, and I'm currently in the process of my third self made song, but I'm kinda stuck as of right now, so if anyone would have a listen and gimme some critique I'd be glad^___^ Shit's supposed to be Moombahton and its not properly mixed etc etc. http://hotfile.com/dl/124088723/1ad0f4d/Johancity_-_Moombahtizzle.wav.html
Also, any advise on midicontrollers and general equipment for beginners? Aka what to get.
I've actually been wanting to get into music production for the longest time. I was planning on purchasing FL in a bit but other than that I'd also appreciate some advice on equipment and such for beginners.
Also, would most of you recommend Ableton over FL?

What are you going to produce ? How do you plan to produce (I mean, do you prefer to turn your ideas into music, or experiment with sounds on the fly) Watch this - It shows when Ableton is better. Other than that, there's successful people for every sequencer, and no sequencer is better than any other - it all depends on the way you do your work. The same goes for hardware equipment, no-one can really help you if you don't specify your needs as a producer
Track I've been working on all night: http://soundcloud.com/justanobody/bangerznmash -FX are unfinished and rough cut -Need to add some steam (white noise) FX to the builds and drops -Need an outro -Still needs some final EQ'ing and volume automation -Criticism and suggestions please! :3
Freeloss_ca I can't thank you enough, that tutorial on chords was so insightful. I've never had any kind of formal musical education and that was a great introduction to music theory for me. I've always just built chords and melodies through "trial and error" just by trying random notes until I found something that sounded pleasant to me. Again, thank you!!!
I do mixing, mastering, and production for a living. But i do dabble in electronic music as my side projects. The software i use for work are pro-tools, abelton, and cubase. I use pro tools exclusively for my mixing and mastering. The other programs are for live work/electronic music, mainly dubstep and trance. I'll get to posting some of my work later.
hey guys, I'm just getting started with this stuff. I'm into house and techno but my friend wants me to make some hip hop beats for him. I just want to get familiar with the process. I got the drum sounds and programming down, but I feel like my synths just sound stupid. Any tips to get good sounding synths (for bass, lead etc)?
Hey I am Nate aka dj deadnate! I am in media production and technicians program at college and between starcraft and school work I make my own music! I have been working on this cd for the past 7 months and put a lot of time and effort into working on it. This is 100% my own music made with a program that has basic samples of music and I construct them together to make a song To describe my music it’s a mix between chill electro and acoustic music. This file is 100% safe and not that big of a file to dl. If you do not want to dl it check out my youtube page. It has all my music on there to just to show you guys I don’t want to infect or hack your computer! I Kinda want to get into doing this music as side projects for the rest of my life and hell who knows maybe I get a smash hit one day. Any way a lot of my friends enjoy it and I listen to it whenever I am laddering in sc2! any way add me to sc2 if you ever want to play against me (rank 14 diamond) deadnate 267. Subscribe to my channel for when I make more song and enjoy the music
Great book that has everything you need to know about house production styles.
Also consider buying samples off of Goldbaby. I prefer using original drum samples and then compressing them ad hoc with different compressors. Great site for all your classic drum machine needs.
I'm gonna make a house/disco club for this forum. Did it at overclock.net but it failed miserably.
I use Ableton and Reaktor 5, which has a wealth of user created instruments and effects. Like to work on french house, ambient, downtempo, and instrumental stuff. Haven't released anything yet though.
Here are some of my influences:
Nightmares on Wax Curtis Mayfield Boozoo Bajou Lemon Jelly The Avalanches
The Bird Ensemble Fennesz Sakamoto Solo Andata Beef Terminal Nybbl Holoscene Broken Social Scene Apostle of Hustle (Early) Badly Drawn Boy
Hammock Brian Eno Windy and Carl Stars of the Lid Loscil Ad Bicycle
Back in 2004 some friends and myself started djing just for fun. We started makeing small partys in basments or outdoor, now 7 years later we play at clubs an events (still just for fun).
Looking for an LFO that I can plug into any VST. I think max for live should be able to do this, but I'm a noob @ max.
I want to modulate paramaters in operator, and only frequency and 1 other option isn't enough.
Also lets drop cool tips here.
Try hard panning one channel left and one channel right then slightly detuneing them. Try using simple delay with less than 30ms difference between right and left. It makes a sound much more full. (For example 1ms delay on right channel and 16ms delay on the left.)

Good tricks. Thanks for the tips.
I like using parallel compression, for any house producers out there. You run a compressor with lots of threshold on an aux bus and mix it into the main bus. Most producers will use this for full drum rack compression, but it also works really well for single kick drum compression. You can get that big sound without losing too much detail.
Ive been meaning to get into making music but since I dont know anyone or anything, its just an extremely daunting task. The problem is, that every tutorial is either way too advanced (like the once in here with maybe the exception of the first one) or just really bad in quality and/or uninteresting (manuals). Most sites with basic info are just bannerfests with clearly subjective info.
Ive tried downloading FL and trying simple tutorials to get going but since I dont understand even the simplest of things and having demo or (admittedly) illegal software is uninspiring. Seems like to do anything you need some basic equipment like a MIDI controller (I learned what that is yesterday, yea!).
Im too old and impatient to do it the hard way like eJay or playing with demos until I learn it the something from where I could build on. I dont mind paying a bit more so I can enjoy the learning process.
Id like to do electronic dance/trance and remixes.
Ive been considering buying
-Ableton Live Intro (like Ableton more than FL) -Novation ReMote 25 SL MK II (I can get this one used for a significant price reduction) -Novation LaunchPad since it looks like an absolute blast but Ill probably hold it off for a while since it not really needed .
Would this make any sense? Are these good? Presuming I have nothing but a basic PC, do I need to have anything else? The 25 SL just connects through USB, right? Live Intro is significantly cheaper but also obviously has less features but does it still enable me to do, say 90% of stuff that is done normally?
On top of that, any guides, tutorials etc. that start with most basic stuff? Does not need to be free, but not more than $50 either. Im not sure if Tom Cosms tutorials start a bit too advanced?
Any links to quality stuff (I have gone throught the links in this thread already)?
He's a great teacher and a cool dude. I've personally talked with him and he's very helpful.
Any of the Novation series will be good. For trance type stuff you definitely want a keyboard. Go for one of the keyboard/midi launch units. M-Audio makes great controllers as well.
Just start messing around. That's the best advice I can give you. You'll find production is about 20% knowledge and 80% twisting knobs. You could mathmatically determine all your EQ settings, Compressor thresholds, etc. but in the end, it's just moving knobs around. Work on getting ideas down and saved. Then worry about how it sounds later.
If any of you producers/beatmakers are looking for someone to rap over some beats, PM me! And if our two styles work well together, who knows, maybe we could make something out of it!

here's mine! I mostly scratch. Got some quirky scratch tracks, a couple beats, and some hiphop/psych promo mixes i did for a promoter here in Atlanta.
Anyone else do any scratching? I've been on it for about 6 years now. I would rather stay at home and scratch than DJ a party and play music that other people want to hear.
cute thread, had no idea this existed. Well here is some of my really outdated music, mostly hip hop. I make electronic mostly nowadays. I use FL9, alchemy, hypersonic, nexus, edirol orchestral and many other free plugins from KVRaudio.org
