Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true. |

Obviously you don't even know how a power-plant function.
Analyst says it's likely a controlled explosion to improve venting, since it's white smoke.
Still waiting on more information, but it sort of makes you wonder what the situation is that made them resort to blowing stuff up...

There was some footage on the news here tonight.
Japanese search and rescue teams have been working tirelessly in Christchurch over the past few weeks and have made a big difference. The leader, with a tear in his eye explained that they'd be heading home today and that some of the team had already lost family members. They'll be accompanied by New Zealand teams they've been working alongside since the quake.
I just can't imagine what it must be like for those men, having been tirelessly searching amongst crushed buildings for weeks: retrieving bodies and clearing debris... to now head home and face a even greater challenge on their home.
I'd like to raise a glass to them, and to the other search and rescue teams from around the world that have been helping out in Christchurch and are now heading to Japan.
They're heroes.

0803: Japan's NHK TV also has that report of an explosion, which it says was "near" the Fukushima-Daiichi plant. The Tokyo Electric Power Company - which runs the plant - says some workers were injured, NHK reports.
0806: NHK TV says the number of dead across Japan has reached 1,000.
0810: Japanese media reports say that radioactivity has risen 20-fold outside the Fukushima-Daiichi plant.

I would hazard to say Nuclear power plants have the best record of all fuel-using power plants worldwide. How extraordinarily narrow minded haha saying me being narrow minded while talking about nuclear energy lol. Yeah nuclear energy is such long term thought out process since theres still no solution what to do with the waste. My point is Japan build 55 nuclear plant knowing of the danger of quakes by the way just google Kurihara Nuclear Power Plant it got damaged in 2008 by a ~7 earth quake too. leaking radioactive material

It seems something terrible happens at Fukushima 1.

Naoto Sekimura, a professor at the University of Tokyo, says "No Chernobyl is possible at a light water reactor. Loss of coolant means a temperature rise, but it also will stop the reaction”
-Reuters
I'm no expert on this field so I'll take the word of people far more knowledgeable than me for now. God forbid that something like Chernobyl happens again...

Well too be honost. I wouldn't have build nuclear plants in a earthquake/sunami zone. I still trust nuclear fission power. Just don't build it in dangerous places. Europe has basicly no earthquackes ever. Seems like a better place to put them.
Does anybody know how old this plant was ?. The newest generation nuclear plants are desisgned even better as these. They might have been able to keep operating during the quacke. And at least not even have a chance of melting down.

Didn't they say they released the pressure like 45 minutes ago ? Seems like we're getting nowhere if we don't have real evidence...
And Chernobyl was completely different than what's happening right now...
The plant is like 40 years old btw. Doesn't mean it's old or not anyway, it depends on the Fluence inside the core. And yes, the 3rd generation reactors are designed for a meltdown scenario. If there's one, there won't be any leak, since they're a pool of concrete right below the reactor.

It's risks vs rewards.
Japan has a high population density. About one half the population of US condensed into the size of California. To meet the demands of energy, they have to rely on nuclear power, because it's more cleaner than fossil fuel by output and waste. With so much traffic and people, I do not think they want all that horrible smog in their tight packed cities.

Apparently they still don't know what the building was where the explosion took place, it could have been reactor #1 or a different building.

Murphy's law at work again sadly.. *sigh
Hope they get those plants under control ASAP

NHK is telling people to stay inside and close windows and turn off air conditioning/vents, wear masks or wet cloths, wear clothes that don't expose much skin, not to eat food left outside, and wash hands and face.
1015uSv/hr radiation being released, which is about the amount of radiation that people are exposed to in a year.
Edit: Not official gov't word, but NHK is saying to stay inside even if you're more than 10km away.

Exactly my thoughts, I'm sure nuclear energy vs. fossil fuels would make for a perfect debate topic, but this thread is neither the correct place nor time to have this debate.
Meanwhile Tepco have announced that the explosion heard may have been the hydrogen used to cool the plant, still waiting for confirmation.
