What is the chance of Japan have serious problem with their nuclear reator(I avoid using meltdown here) and if such occur, will it have much effect on people in Tokyo?

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Every second in the video is 1 hour, extending for a whole week leading up to and following the 9.0 quake.

Not to belittle your post, but it's kind of scary if people in Japan have to rely on a foreign progaming site to get information about possible dangers of a Japanese nuclear plant meltdown instead of the local government.

Also, I read that it is, as of yet, uncertain whether containment at Fukushima Daini (reactor 2) withstood the explosion. I really hope it did.

I don't know how important being there is for her, but if it's not life changing I'd really not want to risk her dying there. Safety is more important than a few dollars and this is one if the biggest disasters in years.

What is the chance of Japan have serious problem with their nuclear reator(I avoid using meltdown here) and if such occur, will it have much effect on people in Tokyo? Media is saying that they have calculated the radiation level higher than it normally is in Tokyo. But i'd say wait till it gets worse/Tokyo is giving a warning to the people living there. I wouldn't move right know anywhere if i were your GF. As long as he stays mostly inside and does work inside, there isn't that much of a risk to get sick. The chances of japan having a nuclear disaster with similar consequences that Ukraine had with Chernobyl, i really cant say since im not anywhere near expert. It looks bad to my eyes right know. Lots of mistakes done already with the coolings, lots of fires going on etc. I hope your gf is going to be okay and everything gets solved the way its best.

Latest news don't look quite so badly. No need to leave right now, but of course things can change.

It doesn't match with any of the info I've read up to now and it's ridden with language mistakes so I guess it's just a fear-mongering hoax... fucking stupid. Yeah, it's a hoax. Some schools and universities here actually suspended school yesterday due to that text without verifying first, jeez.

To be fair I guess it's pretty hard to determine what information of reliable unless you have decent understanding of how a nuclear power plant works. Most media sources are reporting different things, many of them probably exaggerating or discussing worst case scenarios. The Japanese government on the other hand are probably downplaying the issue and not releasing all information available. Asking for someone more knowledgeable to access the situation in this case is not really a bad idea, rather a quite sound one. Albeit on a gaming site.

TEPCO isn't telling much about the situation at all. Last press conference they were just apologizing all the time instead of answering to the questions people asked. Thats why the goverment is getting frustrated also. (cursing in the media because of it) They are enlargening the safe-area or whatever little by little all the time, which could mean bad if you think about it. There is raising radiation levels eventhough media is saying that everything is under control. So yeah, i'd say its pretty damn hard to determine what information is reliable. Especially when the people who knows best aren't telling shit about it.

Someone at my university orchestra today asked me "when is the radiation reaching here?" x_x There's the pro-nuke lobby exaggerating the good news (someone apparently said that the radiation becomes harmless as soon as it touches the air??), and then there's the anti-nuke lobby along with doomsday freaks and sensationalist press exaggerating the bad news. They need to realize that the panic caused by their ridiculous pranks and exploitations are risking people's lives as well as the economy of an entire fucking region.

The peoples who stream are the members of Citizens' Nuclear Information Center(CNIC) which works to create nuclear free world. Those people are just as bad as the media fear-mongering about fallout here in the US. Nuclear power is much cleaner, and safer than any other kind of energy except solar and hydroelectric and those are not cost efficient nor do they have the capacity to come anywhere close to meeting demand. Any chemical or nuclear engineer will tell you most of the scenarios organizations like these and the media are projecting are completely bogus. It is because of fear-mongering like this that the US has not built a nuclear power plant in forever and is still polluting the environment as badly as we were 10 years ago. The Japanese people have shown great character throughout this disaster and I have no doubt they will show the same character in their recovery not letting something like this stop them from building nuclear power plants and being on the cutting edge of progress as they have been for the last 20-30 years.
