Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Alshahin, im not trying to be a dick here, but you need to stop panicking so that you can absorb everything you read and not feed your own anxiety with partial facts.

Firstly, the source of the info was a MIT scientist, whos words were quoted by an english teacher in japan.

Then, you should understand how nuclear fission works before dismissing what a scientist has to say about the matter. Nowhere was it mentioned that control rods stops the decay of uranium. It is stated however that the introduction of the rods act as a failsafe against runaway chain reactions created by the exponential release of energy found when excess neutrons from decaying uranium collide with other uranium atoms. The rods absorb neutrons, that is all. See www.hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/nucene/u235chn.html

that being said, as long as the reaction is contained, the only heat being created is the residual heat from radioactive decay into more stable isotopes which if monitored shouldnt reach meltdown.

However, although not ideal should meltdown occur it can still be contained. To compare this to chernobyl is just stupid. It will never be allowed to happen although highly improbable in the first place.

Now please, before you spread your anxiety to already jitterry people, make sure your counter arguments facts arent so flimsy. Saying shit like that just doesnt help much at a time like this

edit. Took so long to send i didnt see the ban. My bad.

I'm only half serious, but ignoring the difficulty of doing so in a timely matter, I wonder if it's at all possible to build a huge fan or array of fans to blow air offshore.

That aside, NHK is saying there's a chance that the #2 rods are completely exposed...

I'm pretty sure if they has the resources and power to do that, they might as well just get wind turbine instead, energy problem solved.

You know, I had the same idea but i dismissed it because the fans wouldnt be able to blow the wind far away enough to not be just blown back once they are out of reach of the fans. If that makes sense to you.

I thought about that too, but a long enough tunnel or tube would probably prevent that no? Of course, building something like that would be a nightmare, hah.

well youd have to build a tube that reaches proabably several hundred km into the sea. I dont even think its doable. :S

3rd reactor's rods melted into one right know. There is no cooling what so ever. Not looking good.

Are there conflicting reports because another Reuters reporter mentioned this earlier today:
"TEPCO says it has started pouring seawater into the Fukushima Daiichi No. 2 reactor.

Not sure, latest on Reuters is that rods are fully exposed and that they are pumping sea water into the reactor now.
Maybe the previous statement refered to using sea water for cooling outside the reactor or something?

what i've heard and read is that the cooling system aren't working so they're pouring sea water on the reactor but they're fearing meltdown is imminent

"Fire breaks out near fuel tank at thermal plant in Fukushima "

A fire broke out Monday afternoon near a fuel tank at a thermal plant in Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture, one of the areas hit by last Friday's powerful earthquake, but the fire was extinguished around three hours later, the prefectural disaster task force said.

Oil spilled and caught fire near an inspection facility located close to the plant's fuel oil tank, according to the task force.

The 9,800 liters of oil in the tank did not catch fire and nobody was injured in the incident at the plant operated by Tohoku Electric Power Co.
