Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true. |

Firstly, the source of the info was a MIT scientist, whos words were quoted by an english teacher in japan.
Then, you should understand how nuclear fission works before dismissing what a scientist has to say about the matters[...]
As Alshahin can't answer because he got temp banned.
As stated several times before in this thread the MIT Professor the english teacher quoted is a prof. of economics, with a PhD also in economics. Not really the scientist reliable for nuclear science. Also all "news sources" he said are the best are from atom energy lobbyists groups.
Not saying he is totally wrong in what he's saying, but there definitely is some bias and you can't take that source for granted either.

The low degree of clarification and the scale of mystification in the press is really embarrassing. After this we also need a discussion about the role journalism plays in a society. They can neither report if there has been a meltdown nor paint a correct picture of the possible consequences. Opinions from pundits range from 'just a little bit of radiation, no effect in the long term' to 'end of the atomic age'.
I won't participate in this mythological discussion until many weeks after the events and big newspapers like the New York Times have decently reconstructed what has happened there.

So, it seems the first reactor is stabilized, and they continue to pump sea water in the three reactors. The 3rd's water level is rising, which is a very good sign. They seemed to have released steam from the second reactor successfully. We're still waiting for the water level info, but they said it was rising. - Press Conference from yokosonews.

yeah lol. I noticed that 2 pages after i started my reply. Im at work so my replies arent always speedy. And yes you are correct. I was just stating what he was getting wrong.
It just pisses me off so much when people get so fucking pessimistic and spreading fear when in fact we should be helping and supporting those affected when they need it most. This is already a fucking tragedy. The last thing we need right now is a few idiots killing peoples last glimmers of hope

4 Nights without food, water, or heat. It's really striking that a first world country like Japan which is perhaps the most equipped to deal with an earthquake in the entire world can be brought to its knees like this.
I hope this if nothing else makes the rest of the world reconsider where they stand in terms of building regulations, etc. Props to Japan for dealing with it as well as they are and I can only hope the rest of the world is funneling in aide.

i agree with this. I also want to add that anyone who has donated anything to help those affected deserve props too. Im sure any contributions made are greatly appreciated by the people you are helping.
It saddens me however, that people will mostly pull together when something tragic like this happens? Why not help your fellow man every day?

Unfortunately that is not how most humans work. Self-interest comes before all.

Totally. Also, there are a lot of countries that get totally neglected because they're not as prominent in the public conscious. Japan's lucky to have a lot of friends internationally.
I hope we'll see this kind of compassion become a habit even for the lesser-known countries that are in trouble.

The problem with him really was that he almost sounded as if he wanted to be right for the sake of being right. No one should want to be right about a nuclear disaster.

Nothing wrong with what he said, or? I mean he's right that there are no earthquakes and tsunamis in europe (from what i know of). Questionable is if it is worth mentioning this right now. ^^
